Thanks for the help!

BTW, everyone should try the Captain's Edition mod. It makes the game both much harder and much more fun. Slug A is my favorite poo poo, though the Shivan is hardcore overpowered. And a lot of fun to play with.

Edit: I'm playing 1.067, but I see that 1.069 has come out with lots of new features. Exciting!

Edit 2: Unfortunately, I have no loving clue how I installed the last version on this mac. I don't understand macs at all, I really just can't use them :(

This advice applies to everybody, but try out the hotkeys. I don't know about you people, but I feel like a total operator when I'm adjusting power levels, selecting crewmembers, and activating functions with one-handed keystrokes while only aiming with my mouse.

I'd point you at a guide, but it looks like nobody has bothered to write them all down since they're all in the tooltips. Here is the rundown anyway, because everyone should be using hotkeys:

Crewmembers: F1 through F8, in the order that you got them. Hold shift to multiple-select just like with a mouse.
Weapons/Drones: 1 through 6. Hitting keys normally behaves just like a left click to power something up or select it for targeting, while holding shift makes them act like a right-click.
Systems: A through H. Key powers up, shift-key powers down.
Other: Cloak is C, outbound teleport is T, returning teleport is R, jump is J, and the ship screen is U.

Seriously, try them. They're great.
Just make sure to go into options and set option 1 to brief delay (and enable option 2 if you haven't already for some unimaginable reason!) Without the brief delay a ship surrender dialogue can pop up just as you are hitting '1' to select your weapon and instead you inadvertently accept a surrender.

I was even able to go back to the crystal sector because the game thought I unlocked the crystal crew members. Those weapons are so badass.

The only requirement for getting into the Crystal Sector is "Have a crystal member on your crew" when you get to the beacon. The big kick in the balls are the following are the only ways to get a crystal man:

1) jump through hoops that require you to be really lucky with zones and events

2) start with either Crystal A or B.

The Gila Monster is absolutely not as fun as I'd hoped it'd be. I'm a huge fan of boarding, so after getting the Mantis ship after 38 hours of gameplay, I was actually pretty stoked.

It's amazing if you can get the ball rolling, but I feel like it's so easy to get torn to shreds by any number of matchups in the first couple of sectors. Maybe I've just had poo poo luck- I figured I ought to be rolling in scrap by killing crew but attrition is killing me usually before I can get some survivability upgrades.

The Gila Monster isn't really a boarding ship. It's just that boarding is the least bad option with it because it takes so much effort to turn it into anything else. The hull itself is probably the worst in the game so the entire utility of the ship comes from the crew. Play it to unlock the Basilisk, and never play it again once you have experienced the glorious power of a 4-slot teleporter.

I decided to look into this but then I thought I should probably unlock the Rock ship first, since this could conceivably make the Rock Homeworlds even more impossible to show up. Then I started up a game and on my first run unlocked the Rock ship, giving me all ships.

Then I thought I should probably get the second layout for it since it could, theoretically, make fire bombs and defense drones less likely to show up. My first run with it I got the Stasis Pod in my first jump of the second sector, then I got an Engi ship with a defense drone in my second jump, and a store with a Fire Bomb and Crew Teleporter on my third. I even got the pod fixed in that same sector. Unfortunately I didn't get the Rock Homeworlds on that run but I still unlocked the alternate layout for the Rock ship.

Mods ahoy!

You can shuffle your crew inside a room by pausing the game, ordering 2+ of the people in there out of it, ordering them to stay in the room again, and unpausing. So long as you get the order in which you tell them to return correct, your guys will just switch places; this is very useful if you're fighting in close combat and need to change who's taking the hits, and who's shooting their phaser into the enemy's back.

This is very obvious I know, but just in case someone was having trouble with boarding actions, micromanaging the health of your individual dudes is vital to maximising the damage they can do. A dude on 1% health does just as much damage with his ranged attack as he would with 100%; even Engi and Zoltan can be very useful in a boarding situation provided you manage who's taking the hits correctly.

So I got the crystal pod in sector 2 on my Bulwark and spend the next 5 sectors going from engi to zoltan to engi again and again looking for the zoltan science station event. I do finally find it, and unlock my first crystal crew member ever.

The problem? It was in sector 7 and my choices for sector 7 were zoltan homeworlds and rock homeworlds. Farthest I've gotten on this quest line, and still the game fucks me over. :smithicide:

By the way, the only other ship I have yet to unlock is the engi stealth ship. Is that a good way to unlock that other than searching for the engi homeworlds in sector 3/4 and restarting if they aren't there?

Some thoughts on Captain's Edition:

Maybe it's just bad luck or whatever but I hardly ever seem to see weapons in store anymore since installing it. This means I've had very little exposure to the new weapons and I really don't want to modify the default loadouts for ships because that seems kind of "cheaty".

The new events are pretty great but generally poorly written.

The "trade system" is really kind of dumb but an augment that lets you get free scrap every time you go to the store is pretty good. I got one from a quest that let me get 110 scrap every time I went to a store and it pretty much broke the game.

Space stations, AI ships, and capital ships are really cool.

You can commit acts of piracy that make your crew uncomfortable. I haven't seen any actual consequence for this but it seems like it builds to a possible mutiny or whatever. Maybe you'll get an event where the person in the helm gets killed or people leave your ship. If you have a Mantis crew you can choose an option during piracy events that is essentially "we're loving mantises deal with it" and you get no negative reaction from the crew.

A lot of the new drones and weapons seem to emphasize speed or multiple shots over power. This is interesting and all but running into a Zoltan ship/base with new weapons or drones is pretty much a death sentence because they will tear your ship to shreds before you can charge up the FTL or get their shield down. The same can be said for reaching late game ships/bases without a quick way to get through their regular shields. This also makes it especially difficult to use the stealth ship early on.

Overall the mod is a lot of fun and gives you a lot of new stuff to do if you feel like the game had been stagnating. However, I think I'm going to uninstall it eventually because so far it seems like everything you encounter either crushes you mercilessly or makes the rest of the game way too easy.

I agree, it is a very different experience. Lots of fun though! One time I was flying the Engi B and I committed piracy and it cost me a crewmember. The one crew member I had :)

One time I had a fully decked out Basalisk but I'd had some bad luck with weapon drops/purchases. I ran into the bounty hunter and dude just wrecked my poo poo. Oxygen is down AND there are fires everywhere, so I have people dying of asphyxiation and burning to death. Rotating people through the medbay while I hope the engines charge for a jump. Started with a full crew, ended with three crewmembers. Started with full health, ended with 2 bars.

It was awesome.

I bought this game a while back and have only recently started playing it; Steam says it's been <20 hours. I made it to the final boss once on Easy but I died. Yesterday, I'm crusin' around the galaxy, not paying much attention to what I'm doing (which is what usually gets me killed--playing casually while cooking or reading or whatever), and I jump into a sector with a quest marker in it. "Huh," I thought, "I must've picked up an escort mission in the last sector."

Nope.

I evidently bumbled into the Crystal Cruiser questline at some point and completed it without even being aware of its existence. I had to come browse the thread to see what the hell I'd done.

One thing is for sure based on posts like the ones above--I'm not buying any more lottery tickets, because I'm pretty sure I've used up all my luck for the year.

Is there some sort of accuracy stat? About 3 jumps into sector 1 I picked up an additional burst mark 2 laser. 6 shots every 12 seconds, pretty sweet right? But as soon as I equipped the both suddenly I couldn't hit poo poo. 5 out of 6 shots would miss. Even if I took down their piloting and engines, I was barely hitting 50 % of the time. This was in the first 3 sectors, so it wasn't like I was fighting super ships or anything. I had enough energy bares and weapons were manned. Is this normal or did I just hit a run of lovely luck?

There is an evasion stat. Enemies have it too. If you knock out the enemy's piloting room or engines they will stop dodging shots.

Nothing on your ship affects how likely you are to hit. Are you sure you took out their piloting or engines? If either are red their evasion goes to 0.
