Cool Factor : Bitcoin is popular among Young Americans
“It is all that the young can do for the old, to shock them and keep them up to date” George Bernard Shaw

Results in a recent nationwide survey conducted for The Street by Gfk, reveal that a majority of the 18-25 year olds whom responded, believed that bitcoin would act as catalyst to grow the global economy.

15% of those would rather own bitcoin that gold.

Bitcoin is popular among young Americans

The bitcoin revolution is catching up rapidly with the younger crowd. Factbrowser says 79% of US consumers aged 18-24 years old own smart-phones. Bitcoins are being accepted by leading online merchants, like Overstock.com, and HypeBeast.com, famous for its cool streetwear fashion. Many of these sites, if not most, cater to the prized 18-30 demographic.

To familiarize students with alternative currencies, Cumbria University in the United Kingdom has announced that it is willing to accept payment in bitcoins as tuition fees, becoming the first public university in the world to do so. For college and university students this spring break, hanging out with friends, vacationing in happening locales and partying might be paid for with bitcoins.

CheapAir.com has become the first online travel site to accept bitcoins. Visitors to The D and the Golden Gate casinos in downtown Las Vegas can now shop with bitcoins. While what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, what happens to the bitcoins? For now, CheapAir.com will still convert the bitcoins to U.S. dollars to pay associated airlines and hotels.

As Bitcoin gains acceptance by business establishments, high end purchases in brick-and-mortar stores will get more common. A Lamborghini dealership in California, announced that they had gained their second customer who chose to pay in bitcoins.

While three out of four Americans admitted that they had never heard of the Bitcoin, 32% would consider using an alternative form of currency like Bitcoin versus just 11% of those over 65. Awareness by the younger set may be attributed to their openness to experiment with new technologies. 50 to 60 year olds had a higher familiarity about bitcoins at 30%. Yet, a sense of caution among the higher age brackets, that have seen the fading away of E-Gold and the dot com bubble burst, probably led an overwhelming majority (80%) to say that they would rather own gold instead of bitcoins.

Bitcoin as a medium of payment and exchange is gaining momentum. The strong loyalty and the absence of unreasonable paranoia about digital currencies among the youth will probably be able to tide over the volatility and doomsday speculations we are continually being inundated with.

[–]cypherdoc2 7 points 9 hours ago*

As a father, I can tell you that children oftentimes speak the naked truth.

These young people intuitively know that without the naked truth of Bitcoin, their lives will forever be emburdened with the scourge of irredeemable debt and all the lies that go with it.

Bitcoin might become one of the best investments in computer history.
Here’s why.

[David Seaman] David Seaman

At today’s panic price of $705 per coin, assuming you were to buy today, I believe Bitcoin may be one of the best investments in computer history—if not human history.

The market cap of Bitcoin as I write this is $8.6 billion (US). That’s the total market capitalization of all existing currency units for what is, by far, the most popular and successful electronic currency. And much of that currency is being stored and held by users expecting its future value to be much higher—in fact, despite all the recent price volatility, only $33.9 million in total trading volume has occurred over the past 24 hours (source: CoinMarketCap).

You in response (maybe): But this is all some crazy weird scam or fad or fleeting force of nature, David Seaman! The price will be nothing soon, NOTHING!!!111!!! Can’t you see that?!!

No. Think about this: even today, as Bitcoin endures a panic sell-off in response to Apple’s uninspired corporate protectionism, Mt. Gox incompetence du jour, and Russia’s “rejection” of Bitcoin… even today, one Bitcoin buys you $705 of value. You can get a pretty darn nice new laptop for a Bitcoin. You can get seven one-hour massages or one seven-hour massage for a Bitcoin, or a round-trip business class flight.

Such currency! Bitcoin is not under attack or threatened. Bitcoin is a miracle. A miracle of ingenuity, technology, and engineering. It was born in 2009 because it was not possible in 2000, or 1990, or 1900.

As others in Bitcoin land have pointed out, the Internet—if it were to be ranked as an economy—would be one of the largest economies on the planet.

Until Bitcoin’s creation, this economy has had to transact using legacy currencies from an older system. And pay dearly for the privilege of doing so.

What many people don’t seem to recognize is that our world already runs on digital currency. Modern fiat currency could be objectively described as uncapped, non-cryptographic digital currency. (Whereas Bitcoin is capped, cryptographic digital currency.)

The psychological and technical leap from one digital currency to another isn’t all that great.

As more individuals and companies come to realize this, as they benefit from inordinately lower transaction costs and faster settlement times, their need for Bitcoin as a transactional medium will increase.

And as that transactional use increases, the perceived value of Bitcoin will naturally increase as well—that’s why I was so ecstatic when the first U.S. gas stations and coffee shops began accepting Bitcoin. That’s when a transactional medium enters the big leagues on planet Earth.

And as all this is happening, the creation of new Bitcoins is slowing down by design—getting harder and harder to mine new ones, getting more and more scarce. This has never been done before in currency, not on such a scale, not intentionally.

So no. I’m not worried about Bitcoin or ‘the future’ of anything. I’m mystified and amazed at what is just around the corner. Not by luck or by faith, but by design.

Apple Protest in SF - Bring Our Bitcoin Back! (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 17 hours ago* by kgreenek

You know this already, but Apple officially removed blockchain.info from the app store. Sigh. That was the LAST major bitcoin wallet app in the app store. Now what...

I get it Apple, regulation is.. grey.. with bitcoin apps. I understood when you blocked CoinJar. I could accept it when you blocked CoinBase. I was even ok when you blocked Gliph, although much more begrudgingly.

But the blockchain.info has been our default mobile wallet on iOS for a LONG time now. Hell, I bought a couple beers just last night at the #sfbitcoinfair using the blockchain app. That ugly, outdated little app represented an unspoken agreement between Apple and us bitcoiners. A bone, if you will, tossed down from above. While other apps were banned, at least we could always send and receive payments on our phones using the blockchain app.

We could...

Now that implicit agreement is shredded. It was a lie all along. Did they just not notice the blockchain app until now? Did they update their policy so it could be specially banned? Was there a new manager with a chip on his/her shoulder trying to impress her underlings by crushing the only tool remaining for an entire community of users?? No matter how you feel about Bitcoin, you have to feel that this move reeks of anti-competitive big business.

It doesn't matter, we need to get their attention. By doing more than just signing a petition (although, you should sign it if you haven't already: http://www.change.org/petitions/apple-allow-bitcoin-wallets-on-the-iphone).

In the early days of Linux, protests were organized to promote open source ideals. Hundreds of people showed up at computer stores to return the copies of Windows that came pre-bundled with their computers. It took a lot of shouting and media attention, but finally the stores were forced to honor the refunds because it in the contracts that came with their computers.

I propose we organize a similar protest to support bitcoin. I will be showing my support in my hometown of San Francisco, but I encourage others anywhere else where similarly dedicated bitcoiners are willing to stand up and be heard by Apple. Non-violent of course, except perhaps towards your iPhone:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHtzZukli3o

Ideas so far include:

Protest in front of Apple stores holding up QR codes to bitcoin charities. This will highlight the fact that iPhone users can't donate, and will also raise awareness for the charities and bitcoin in general.
Protest in the Apple headquarters holding up a giant cardboard iPhone with a QR code to raise money. Live-stream it and raise a much as possible to show how much the community stands behind bitcoin.

Can you help come up with some interesting ideas? Keep it classy.

We are not drug dealers or malicious hackers. We are technologists. We are entrepreneurs. We are normal people who want to be a part of something new.

But we can't... Because we have iPhones.

Please post your ideas for how to effective bring attention to this issue and promote bitcoin. The goal is to show Apple that we care a LOT about bitcoin.

EDIT: Thank you all for the support! We are thinking tentatively of having the public protest next Saturday in front of this apple store: https://www.google.com/maps/preview...6ea6ea931d71077

I created this Facebook event for anyone who would like to join! https://www.facebook.com/events/251127401727519/?previousaction=join&source=1

EDIT 2: Wow this response is amazing! I am working on having t-shirts made for the event on Saturday. They will say something to the effect of "Distribute our bitcoin apps!". Or "Keep apps distributed!". Got any other ideas for the t-shirt slogan?

[–]Didicito -1 points 6 hours ago

Apple provides a public service and a lot of responsabilities comes with that. In case they reject an app, they are supposed to give clear information on the rejection cause. I don't know about your country, but on mine country (and I think many others) that's cleary specified in the Constitution. And probably there are several laws to enforce private companies to be informative about the service they provide.

If I recall right, you have to pay to be a certified AppStore developer. Regardless of the ammount you pay, that makes it even worse.

[–]xr1s 3 points 7 hours ago

It could generate a profound amount of negative press for Apple, which could further decrease their sales and general popularity. That kind of pressure could conceivably result in bona fide changes.

[–]Just2AddMy2Cents -3 points 10 hours ago

No, it's not. We're talking about the liberalization of capital. This is bigger than one company, or any single one of us. I'm about to get violent. And, I've never hit another human in my life.

[–]dawiepoolman 2 points 10 hours ago

I agree. What will be written in the history books is up to us. It is bigger than the next stupid iPhone and Angry Birds.

[–]kgreenek[S] -4 points 17 hours ago

That is the point. We want to send and receive bitcoin on our iPhones.

You are right, but why did they leave it in the store for 2 years with the ability to send/receive payments? Did they just not notice in all that time?

[–]PowdaBam -4 points 17 hours ago

That's only half the story though, Apple has been banning btc apps for almost two years. Blockchain designer was forced to break tos cause apple can suck a duck. Quack quack.

[–]arpaddd 0 points 12 hours ago

Your logic works only for a future customers. How could I know 3 years ago, that they would ban such an essential (for me) and legal mobile functionality? They (deceptively) advertized the product as a general mobile device.

[–]arpaddd 0 points 3 hours ago

Butthurt isnt the correct word - I will loose my own money and time by switching to android, since i will have not only to buy the hardware, but also to research the app store and evaluate and buy the apps I need to use. Apple will not refund me the then useless apps I bought. So my complaining is justified - they have created more loss to me that I created to them by complaining. I feel complaining about wrong behavior of companies should be done. New potential customers also should be warned about companies like apple and potential risk they face.

[–]smeggletoot 2 points 14 hours ago

I think you should get a few hundred people to go form an orderly queue and start camping outside the major stores from midnight on X date.

Get as much press attention as possible - I can hear the news anchor right now:

"It looks like a scene we've witnessed dozens of times before; Apple fans queuing up for the latest hot new release, camping out to be first to get their hands on the newest gadget...But you'd be wrong. These queues we are seeing are bitcoiners and they're not here to buy any Apple products...Over to Casey who who has more on this outside the Apple HQ..."

submitted 1 hour ago by GameDev2014

Placed an order on Jan 27. No update until last Wed. when I get a call from them asking for the license number that I was upgrading. They apparently decided that since the software that I ordered was unavailable, that they would substitute without asking. (Replacing a NEW license with an upgrade) Their software does not track that a substitution has been made and it is my problem to go back to bitpay so that they can figure out how to credit me for the new license that originally ordered.

My suggestion right now is stay away from TigerDirect until they get their act together.

What many people really don't get yet is Bitcoin/Litecoin are the worlds first, very liquid, average persons, commodity/asset of exchange, that doesn't need any governments or banks to exist and it's impact on the lives of the average person will be way bigger then the internet.

..new universal and local exchanges must marry BTC/LTC ( which is really a form of an asset not a currency or money ) with gold/silver/commodities It will lead to a grand new world reserve liquid trading commodity vehicle (not currency ) ... and eliminate ALL potential regulation problems with bitcoin/Litecoin being equated to one, or any fiat government currency!!!!!

One day soon, when a hard working person in Somalia ( or name impoverished country here ), receives the same pay as as anyone else in the world, doing the exact same job he/she is doing and then can take what he/she made and buy some rice at the same price ( all shipping/handling for entire world is priced in at an exchange ), with that same universal currency/asset he/she earned there will be no more poverty anywhere.

This will also give bitcoins/Litecoins value and gold/silver/commodities liquidity and bypass all fiat currencies in the world taking away power from the top 85 families on the planet that have the same assets as the bottom 3.5 billion people.

I have warned people again and again, Chinese don't think "telling lies" is a guilty. Yes someone may think me cynical.

Now we know, the guy "TradeFortress" who ran inputs.io is actually Chinese. He took away with customer's 4100 bitcoins and said "it was stolen". I ever doubted his explanation at first time. His chinese name is 吴泽岳.

This guy also ran a "bitcoin bank", calling "coinlenders", purchasing advertisement on and promoted by btc123.com and so on. He ran away now.

Many Chinese victims are seeking to ask police for help. Link: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=355414.0 http://c.blog.sina.com.cn/profile.php?blogid=b541bf698900099g

As far as I know, there is still a infamous Chinese guy "Lixiaolai" trying to ran "bitcoin bank" to get coins from people, with the promise to give back interests. Actually, these fraudsters have no REAL ways to invest.

They ofter boast and tell lies about the amount of their own bitcoins and other assets first, and then advertise on btc123.com and so on. People can get a little interests at first, but even Madoff can't last.

Please, please don't give your hard earn coins to those fraudsters. Please stop paying IQ tax.
