I don't know whether to post all or none of them. quote:Caitlin Moran (born Catherine Elizabeth Moran; 5 April 1975) is a British broadcaster, TV critic and columnist at The Times, where she writes three columns a week: one for the Saturday Magazine, a TV review column, and the satirical Friday column "Celebrity Watch". Moran is British Press Awards (BPA) Columnist of the Year for 2010, and both BPA Critic of the Year 2011, and Interviewer of the Year 2011.[1] quote:Moran's Irish-Catholic father is a one-time "drummer and psychedelic rock pioneer" who became "confined to the sofa by osteoarthritis".[2] She is the eldest of eight children and has four sisters and three brothers. She was born in Brighton and then lived in a three bedroom council house in Wolverhampton with her parents and siblings. She attended Springdale Junior School and was then educated at home from the age of 11, having attended secondary school for only three weeks.[3] Not to knock Moran's childhood, but I can see how it might have been the seed of that quote. Doesn't make me wanna punch the pencils guy any less on general principle. I even made the effort to see things from his world view! (I looked up Moran's article on Wikipedia)

scarycave posted:Is that good or bad exactly? Either/or. ZP's art is competent but staid. Everything seems to be very infographic, like each panel or beat is going THIS IS THE MESSAGE. The one with the robot valedictorian even more so, since there's a literal diagram shown half-way in. It's also rather safe, which is funny because the dude is quoting about creativity and challenge and such without showing it or doing anything experimental in his work

Everything is so uniform and clean - everything just sort of blends together and goes flat. Considering he dislikes learning stuff and would rather do his own thing (because people said he wasn't good or something) you'd expect the art to be...more out there. Like abstract, or generic anime or something.

Couldn't put my finger on it, but you are right. Every panel looks like an illustration from some 'highbrow' magazine to an article about how serious guys in business suits play Angry Birds, or what watches it's acceptable to wear when you are over thirty.

Young Freud posted:Either/or. ZP's art is competent but staid. Bingo. That's probably where his background in graphic design is hurting him more than helping: he's used to have someone else do the thinking for him (clients, etc) so when left to his own devices, the result is pretty, but also pretty souless. It does not help that Zen Pencils is basically the tutorial level of "rear end in a top hat: the Game"

scarycave posted:Maybe that's why its so boring. It doesn't really make my eyes "pop" or whatever the term is for attracting the eye. Oh yeah. I remember taking a class with an instructor who was a real abstract art type and getting admonished if I tried sketching out anything beforehand instead of letting the hand and the charcoal naturally put it down on paper. I learned something important about freedom of flow from the guy despite dropping the class in favor for more traditional art instruction with still-lifes and such. I remember seeing his professional work and he described his process as painting stuff on acetate sheets and mush it together and would do this a dozen times until it came out with something striking (since all art is done through repetition, be it figure drawing, design, or abstract art).

muscles like this? posted:The little kid artist one is kind of funny because what kind of teacher critiques little kid art. I've had one of those in preschool. We were supposed to draw a bird in a bird cage, but I added in Mario and Luigi watching a TV and I got in trouble. Most art classes (grade school - early college basic courses) will pretty much try to spare your feelings, if you actually talk to them about it, they will go into more detail (since your asking for criticism). Generally though, the whole point is to try to help you. I've had people complain about classes before because they didn't want to draw nude figures and wanted to focus more on their style, though they snapped out of it after a few more courses once they started getting the hang of it - I'm guessing the Zen Pencils guy is like that too, except he never really grew out of it. Frankly I have a hard time doing productive art stuffs without someone giving me orders because I still lack a lot of discipline and I can't really focus on doing more intense stuff that I should be doing and just doodle random junk.

The art may be bland but like others have said the real problem has that he doesn't understand the quotes he is using. No, telling someone to get up and go do something does not mean going crazy to live a stereotype. No, being a man does not involve carving up bullies with hammers. No, Rand meant "gently caress the common man" not steal cookies. It is like he gets them off those quote websites that post them out of context and he reads them at face value
