CampingCarl posted:[citation needed] for pretty much everything in this strip. I know they will be proved wrong like everything else Muir quotes but I need to know what the root of putting climate denialists in camps and nullifying the borders is. You can't make up pure batshit insane. I don't know about most of that, but the "amendment to limit free speech" is based on a Ted Cruz quote where he (lying through his loving teeth) claimed that a proposed constitutional amendment would limit freedom of speech and freedom of religion because it only explicitly calls out freedom of the press. The reason he's really blatantly lying is because the constitutional amendment in question would grant congress the right to regulate campaign finance (and nothing else.) Naturally, Muir just took Cruz at his word instead of actually checking what the law would do.

Latuff is a Marxist. The imagery he depicts Putin and the Chinese PM with is bourgeois as gently caress. While he depicts Obama as, well, Obama, it seems like a more flattering depiction (looking at it from a leftist perspective) than the one he gives the other two. It really seems like he's going "god drat it, Obama actually did something not terrible for once and yet it means a grand total of nothing because the Chinese just stepped in instead to keep the bourgeois party going." I might just be PBFing the gently caress out of it, but that's my take.

Krinkle's got it. We performed horrible torments on this guy, not once, not ten times, not even a hundred times. Nearly 200 times, agents of our nation caused this human man to not just mentally but bodily experience mortal terror, choking and spasming in pure, unmitigated limbic revolt. The real interesting thing about Muir is that almost all these other guys are making cartoons for public consumption, so they have to dress up all the usual right-wing talking points in generally palatable terms. So it's a lot of standard "Democrats kill jobs, tax and spend, DEBT" sort of thing, where they try to at least make it seem like complaints with a basis in fact. Not Muir. He is 100% a product of the echo chamber, getting talking points straight off right-wing blogs and sending them right back out to readers who aren't looking for anything more than that. As a result his comics often end up just a few chemtrails short of a Dees, since literally no theory or claim is too ridiculous or crazy to pass on, as long as it reflects poorly on Obama or other Democrats. His cartoons, more than any others, are a look into that pure unfiltered conservative talking point alternate universe. Cartoons like the latest are probably the purest example of that sort of thing. Absolutely none of those "facts" are supposed to convince anyone who hasn't already fully bought into the worldview where they could be true. The only comparable thing I can think of is, as mentioned, Dees. Even Animal Nuz, which is probably the closest thing on the other side in terms of blind ideological alignment, is still more on the level of an Allie in terms of twisting facts. That is, it exists in our universe, albeit a distorted version of it.

Fulchrum posted:Am I the only one who noticed that Muirs idea of a token feminist just said that feminists will try to blame poor innocent men of harassment and oppression? Muir is unable to write a realistic token lefty. The token feminist has "realized" she was wrong and given up her democratic piety in dozens and dozens of arcs. Its funny because Muir has written himself into a corner as he has progressively become more of an ideologue. At first she was supposed to be, I suppose, similar to the right-wing characters in Trudeau's cartoons: wrong but human. But his beliefs about the democrats have become so hostile and simplistic that it is probably impossible for him to write a token democrat. His token democrat espouses far-right beliefs in some weird way for him to humanize her. If she was "democratic" in the way that Muir now sees democrats the only logical and moral thing for the characters to do would be to her attack her.

Jan isn't really the token lefty. She's basically supposed to be the "mainstream" liberal who just needs to see THE TRUTH and they'll be eternal GOP voters. Skye is the token lefty, and she's portrayed as a reckless child even when she does stuff that the right-wing protagonists do (like using Don Machina's plane).

Kiwi Ghost Chips posted:In which part specifically was he lying? Ted Cruz posted:“I'm telling you, I'm not making this up," he said as the audience offscreen gasped. "Sen. Chuck Schumer [D-N.Y.] has announced the Senate Democrats are scheduling a vote on a constitutional amendment to give Congress the plenary power, the unlimited authority to regulate political speech. Because elected officials have decided they don’t like it when the citizenry has the temerity to criticize what they’ve done." The proposed amendment is very specific. It does not grant congress the right to do any of those things. It grants congress (and the states) the right to regulate campaign finance, specifically, and grants the press a specific exemption because of the way the press works. You can still say whatever you want, religious or otherwise. Not only did he not acknowledge what the proposed amendment actually does, he called out specific things that the proposed amendment definitely does not do.

The article in question contains a link to a website with a video link of Cruz's commentary and a direct link to the text of the bill. It might not be the best source, but it's sufficient. I'm curious how congress could use this amendment to regulate content, since that should still be unconstitutional (the amendment in question would allow for them to regulate amounts donated/spent, but that shouldn't reflect on content.)
