I don't know about most of that, but the "amendment to limit free speech" is based on a Ted Cruz quote where he (lying through his loving teeth) claimed that a proposed constitutional amendment would limit freedom of speech and freedom of religion because it only explicitly calls out freedom of the press. The reason he's really blatantly lying is because the constitutional amendment in question would grant congress the right to regulate campaign finance (and nothing else.)

Naturally, Muir just took Cruz at his word instead of actually checking what the law would do.

It's developed entirely into Revealingly-Clothed-American*-Woman dispensing right-wing talking points or straight-up conspiracy summaries. The writing has always been awful, but the amount of text for story or character development has dropped well below critical in the last month. The democrat characters are getting better development.

The real interesting thing about Muir is that almost all these other guys are making cartoons for public consumption, so they have to dress up all the usual right-wing talking points in generally palatable terms. So it's a lot of standard "Democrats kill jobs, tax and spend, DEBT" sort of thing, where they try to at least make it seem like complaints with a basis in fact.

Not Muir. He is 100% a product of the echo chamber, getting talking points straight off right-wing blogs and sending them right back out to readers who aren't looking for anything more than that. As a result his comics often end up just a few chemtrails short of a Dees, since literally no theory or claim is too ridiculous or crazy to pass on, as long as it reflects poorly on Obama or other Democrats. His cartoons, more than any others, are a look into that pure unfiltered conservative talking point alternate universe. Cartoons like the latest are probably the purest example of that sort of thing. Absolutely none of those "facts" are supposed to convince anyone who hasn't already fully bought into the worldview where they could be true.

The only comparable thing I can think of is, as mentioned, Dees. Even Animal Nuz, which is probably the closest thing on the other side in terms of blind ideological alignment, is still more on the level of an Allie in terms of twisting facts. That is, it exists in our universe, albeit a distorted version of it.

Muir is unable to write a realistic token lefty. The token feminist has "realized" she was wrong and given up her democratic piety in dozens and dozens of arcs.

Its funny because Muir has written himself into a corner as he has progressively become more of an ideologue. At first she was supposed to be, I suppose, similar to the right-wing characters in Trudeau's cartoons: wrong but human.

But his beliefs about the democrats have become so hostile and simplistic that it is probably impossible for him to write a token democrat. His token democrat espouses far-right beliefs in some weird way for him to humanize her. If she was "democratic" in the way that Muir now sees democrats the only logical and moral thing for the characters to do would be to her attack her.

There are structural problems of majoritarian abuse for a constitutional regulatory ability of the sort the proposed amendment describes- among these are the ability to selectively attack campaign messages based on content. It also incorporates by implication a separate constitutional press freedom right, a concept many legal scholars have a lot of trouble with. Thankfully it's a political stunt with little to no chance of passing. More generally, I'd suggest your first cite on something contentious should probably be something other than TPM.

The article in question contains a link to a website with a video link of Cruz's commentary and a direct link to the text of the bill. It might not be the best source, but it's sufficient. I'm curious how congress could use this amendment to regulate content, since that should still be unconstitutional (the amendment in question would allow for them to regulate amounts donated/spent, but that shouldn't reflect on content.)

You can still say what you want as long as there's no money moving around. The pastor gets paid by the parish? Regulated as Congress chooses.
