ThinkTank posted:Lindros just sat out and joined Team Canada to force a trade. The Nordiques originally said they were unwilling to trade him and would wait as long as it took to keep him, but the NHL intervened and forced them to move him. Incidentally, they actually agreed to trades with both the Flyers AND Rangers, so much so that it required arbitration (by Todd Bertuzzi's uncle of all people) to determine which team got him. The NHL is strange sometimes. Between this crap and all the teal sweaters I feel like I really missed some hosed up poo poo (in a good way) by being a child throughout the 90s. Thanks for the info, gramps.

T-Bone posted:He is eligible - STL still owns his rights. Technically the Devils still own Kovalchuk's rights. Radulov wouldn't be eligible though (he's a UFA now). Sobotka would be eligible anyway. I specifically used a date after the draft but before July 1 so that everyone drafted this year and everyone who played last year would be eligible. Kovalchuk's rights aren't owned by New Jersey, his ability to return to the league is determined by New Jersey (apparently). Not the same thing; NJ could have 50 other players on their reserve list. Kovalchuk is not eligible.

Rutkowski is probably being auto'd, given it's middle of the night where he lives if I'm not mistaken.

Sorry I'm late. Picking Grandon Gormley of the Coyotes because that dude is probably a top 4 pairing this season and a potential 1-2D in just a few years.

that sure is a pick. the talent deficit misses on Olli Maata, but manages to pick up Tobias Enstrom. Enstrom is an incredibly talented little guy who has had trouble staying healthy over the past few years. He's a strong positional defender who can play top D minutes and put up .5PPG (aside from this past season, sadly). (My own comment on the pick is that while I like Enstrom, staying healthy is a problem for him, and I wonder how much of his perceived value comes from being the best of a bad lot, similar to my concern with Ehrhoff.) I like Enstrom. I was hoping he'd fall another round or two because having him on my second pair would be huge. Gormley is a huge homer pick, though, you could have definitely got him a couple rounds from now. mentholmoose fucked around with this message at 17:39 on Jul 30, 2014 |

really thought I was gonna take a center or a defenseman this round but I'm going to continue to neglect those positions and take yet another winger Marian Gaborik - 32, 4.875 cap hit for the next 7 years, wasn't very good in NY or CBJ but including the playoffs went 19-19-38 in 45 games for LA. Only 2 seasons removed from a 41 goal season, injuries are always kind of a concern with him but he's still a solid bet for 30+ goals even when he misses time. edit: maybe i can teach one of Eberle, Gaborik, and Vanek to learn center Vanek-???-Eberle ???-Galchenyuk-Gaborik lol defense Rask Jamwad Hilder fucked around with this message at 21:16 on Jul 30, 2014 |

He's been healthy the last two seasons and he's the best D remaining and he has been for a while. He's old is the only legit knock against him. I like Gaborik, like his contract too. Didn't take him because he's so drat inconsistent.

Andrei coming down just met PK on the way up this past season in terms of role. I'd give him a C for top pairing, but like an A+ for 2nd pairing. A good pick and I like him. Sorry! I thought we were further back when I checked earlier this morning, but now I have made the thread wait for four hours! Anyways, give me Alexander Semin. He just turned 30, if often injured, and has labels like 'enigmatic' or 'inconsistent' attached to him. So, why would I want to take him? He gets it done. What's it? Scoring, mostly. Also, a good possession player. While the years of him being a 30-goal scorer may be over, he is still a good piece to have. So far, I now have Nash - RNH - Semin Weber - Vlasic mentholmoose is up.

eXXon posted:... but nobody owns his rights at the moment? His rights were owned on the date I used in the OP. e: To clarify, the issue here is that there are good UFAs who will play in the NHL next year. We had three options: not drafting them at all, allowing it to be a free for all where you suddenly get to draft a guy because he signed a contract right before your pick came up, or the way I did it. The way I did it allows you to take the risk of signing an unknown or taking a risk (with Alfy for example) that a guy will retire or sign in the KHL. It does mean that a currently UFA player has more risk, but at the same time it may mean that by drafting one you end up with a great bargain pick. I'm not sure what I'm doing anymore, but I probably need someone to score a few goals, so I'll take Patric Hornqvist. He has decent possession numbers against good competition, fair scoring rates and a reasonable contract for what's left of his prime. I'll pretend that the playoff wet farts were an anomaly. Also, he got traded for James Neal, so he must be good. On the other hand, he got traded by Jimmy Rutherford, soooooo. On the third hand, he should play with one of Malkin/Crosby next season and put up better than usual totals, making me look good in the process. And to tail it off, his dyslexic name is Hatric Pornqvist. Anyway I've got Hornqvist-Kadri-Tarasenko and McDonagh-Pietrangelo for now. Not the punchiest scoring, but those three forwards were all in the top 20 in the league in penalty differential, so hopefully the powerplay will work out with some veterans later on. Pat Clements is up.

Since I killed the thread, you can all have a look at one HFBoards version of this exercise, with Leafs fans participating. The caveat is that they decided to only build a team for a single season and ignore the cap because they're dumb. My favourite is the Washington guy who traded up to pick OEL 16th with Subban on the board, then had Subban drop to his original pick (22nd).
