Earlier this year, the annual Lowy Institute poll of Australian attitudes found 40 per cent no longer believed democracy is the best form of government.

The main reasons given were that democracy was serving vested interests rather than those of the majority, and that there was no real difference between the two major parties.

One thing I kind of don't get about political donations. Donations to a party from a business or interest group theoretically (hah) shouldn't be influencing or creating policy within that party as much as it should be supporting a party due to it's stances aligning with what that business/interest group wants, right?

If that's the case how the hell do we think that groups are supporting ideologies that they agree with, rather than paying for policy when they make donations to *both* major parties in huge amounts. I mean the only thing they seem to agree on is "torture more refugees" which I don't think any business has as a core principle. Except maybe Serco.

The only thing I can think of is that my first premise is wrong, and people are allowed to give parties money in order for them to produce policy which helps those people in which case what in the actual gently caress, how is that different to bribery?

You know how there was rumour that the federal Liberal Party want to make businesses party members and to give them a vote? Well, it would seem they're trying it out in Sydney. You see, they hate Clover so much they want to give businesses the vote. No, that's incorrect. Two votes

quote:

Today the Government announced to the media that they would support a Bill by the Shooters and Fishers Party to manipulate how people can vote in the City of Sydney.

Under the pretence of increasing the business vote in the City of Sydney, the Premier told the Daily Telegraph that he would introduce the Shooters’ Business Voting Bill in Parliament today.

No one has seen the detail. It’s been secretly concocted between the Shooters and Fishers and the Liberal Party.

If they’re so confident about what they are doing why the secrecy, why the lack of community consultation and why the rush?

This is not about business voting. This is about manipulating democracy and desperately trying to distract people from ICAC and the corruption that’s been exposed between the Liberal Party and developers.

Maybe ask him if he's smart enough to do some basic math. Current minimum wage is $640.90 a week before tax. 6 months of that equals $15,381.60 before tax. Give him an actual figure to slap in his face instead of some vague ideological thing he feels he agrees with. He expects every single young person in Australia to have a savings of at least 15 grand to fall back on.

Or you could point out that since these cuts are targeting young people, they are just starting their working careers and haven't actually had time to accumulate those savings. Correct my figures if I'm wrong, but I believe it should still take a minimum of 6 months to accumulate that 6 month's worth of savings! Even for the smartest and most aggressive saver who forgoes eating or paying their rent or any other worldly expenses whatsoever.

Now what happens if they don't even have a job for that full 6 months.

And doesn't that 6 months get reduced by how much time you've spent in the workforce anyway? So someone who has not been able to get a job and has no savings is getting hit with the full six months, while people with these theoretical savings are having to spend less time off support?
