^^^^ it strikes me as weird they have these cypherpunk anarchist fantasies, but once you suggest someone could do real, objectionable crime with these technologies, they get all offended. and it shows when they try to offer really odd edge cases that are legitimate but super contrived, like "imagine it's 2am on martin luther king day and you are trying to buy a chinese company for $30 million but they deal needs to be closed RIGHT NOW and the chinese businessmen don't know what martin luther king day is. your only option is bitcoin." the fact they have so much trouble naming a realistic and legitimate usecase where bitcoin is better than existing options is telling.

every time i see this, it amazes me.

it's the cost (in terms of amount of bitcoins minted) for each transaction. at first glance, you might see that and think, "yeah, that's kind of a lot, but it's not a fee anyone is paying. it's the creation of units of account by community consensus around an algorithm."

but then you realize miners run at really tiny margins, if they are even lucky enough to break even. so that's roughly how much real-world electricity is being spent on each transaction. if electricity costs 10 cents per kwhr, and a tesla model s can go 100 miles on 38kwhr or 2.63 miles per kwhr (EPA estimate), that means you could get in a car and drive 603 miles cheaper than sending a bitcoin transaction. and if you bring a pocket full of cash and neglect to include a transaction fee on that bitcoin transaction, your paper money will arrive at its destination sooner.

using wolfram alpha's statistics, one bitcoin transaction uses ~1/6 of a standard clothes dryer's annual electricity consumption, and generates 100 kilograms of CO2.

bfl conveniently doesn't include electricity usage. it's about 60 watts, and according to a bitcoin difficulty calculator, you'd only stand to lose 4 cents a day in pure profit with 10 cent per kwhr power. and two weeks later it gets worse.

then again, bitcoin is a startup technology. who cares if you lose money on every hash if you make up for it with volume?

e: ty for the tips reddit.

i hope my money goes to a good charity like "Free Ross Ulbricht" or DownsizeDC or Copblock. also today i learned that lobbying a specific political view is the same thing as charity.

For twelve years, you have been asking: Who is John Galt? This is John Galt speaking. I am the man who loves his life. I am the man who does not sacrifice his love or his values. I am the man who has deprived you of victims and thus has destroyed your world, and if you wish to know why you are perishing-you who dread knowledge-I am the man who will now tell you." The chief engineer was the only one able to move; he ran to a television set and struggled frantically with its dials. But the screen remained empty; the speaker had not chosen to be seen. Only his voice filled the airways of the country-of the world, thought the chief engineer-sounding as if he were speaking here, in this room, not to a group, but to one man; it was not the tone of addressing a meeting, but the tone of addressing a mind.
