Arsenal bought a US-based advanced stats company.

quote:

The workers watch footage of matches from around the world, and they code them in the most meticulous fashion. They look beyond a mere assist, for example, and examine whether the pass has enabled the goalscorer to shoot without breaking stride. Did it put the chance on the striker’s favoured foot? Was the goalkeeper properly positioned?

The numbers are a long way from being simple. The depth is extraordinary and every last detail is assigned a score, from which a comprehensive picture of players and, in turn, teams can be built.

The search for meaningful patterns, objective proof and deep-rooted truths has long since been embraced by baseball, American football and basketball. It is perhaps best known in baseball, where the successful, statistics-driven approach of the Oakland Athletics and their general manager, Billy Beane, spawned the book Moneyball.

So the players in the next Arsenal injury crisis might be statistically better than the current ones that they have? Can't wait.

After a hundred million pounds, a hundred thousand matches and 4 years of advanced stats there's a hush in the room as everyone gathers around the DsZibOt9000.

Arsene Wenger : What does it say?
Steve Bould : It says Liverpool are unable to counteract a packed midfield and you should buy Lionel Messi.

He [Taarabt] is not injured. He’s not fit. He’s not fit to play football unfortunately. He played in a reserve game the other day and I could have run about more than he did. I can’t pick him. I pick people who want to try, who deserve to be at a good football club like QPR, who come in every day and want to work, train and show a good attitude. When he starts doing that, if he ever can do it, maybe he’ll get a game.

We've got two or three of them but 99 per cent of the other lads … I've got a fantastic group of lads here, absolutely superb. I've just been asked a question [about Taarabt]. I can't keep protecting people, who don’t want to run about and train, and are about three stone overweight. What am I supposed to keep saying? Keep getting your 60, 70 grand a week and don't train? What's the game coming to?

I love Taraabt

Sorry, how loving much does Taarabt earn?

Sixty grand for a player who is a proven failure in the prem. Magnificent. Definitely not 'Arry's fault. He'll need to speak to the chairman. He's not got the players.

Is there not some kinds of stipulations in contracts about fitness levels? If you can't finish level 15 or whatever on your bleep test you don't get paid that month.

Honestly though this business about needing to meet the asking price for him is ridiculous -- if there's a team that's actually willing to take him on, let him go, he's garbage

I feel sort of bad for him - he was absolutely at fault for a couple of goals but there was a point where the defence and midfield completely gave up and he was left to fend for himself.

Nice gesture to make though. I wonder if Poyet forced him to do it.

He was really good. He was moaning all summer about wanting to stay with Milan, guess he's just trying to pout his way out of QPR now.

Taraabt was really good for Milan, one of the only players out in the pitch who looked like he wanted to win games. Galliani and Berlusconi were just too cheap to pay up. I feel bad for him but getting fat and pouting around like an rear end isn't going to get him anywhere.

I'm sure if he just concentrated enough (a training camp might help), his work rate would be more appealing and free him to move on. He should write a memoir about his struggles, though.

There's no indication he's being recalled to play in the first team. Moreno was rested for the game - he was out on the pitch after the match running sprints.

I played in that reserve game for 90 minutes and if he didn't think I was running he could have taken me off. Maybe I didn't perform like I could because it was a reserve team game and I was protecting myself.

My job is to create, bring goals to the team. Maybe he expects me to make more tackles. I am not this type of player. I can only get fitness playing Premier League. You can train six or seven hours, but you won't be fit.

The training sessions aren't the same standard as Milan, or what I would expect under another manager

They are not as intense, the players aren't as motivated. It is the same as we used to do at Tottenham years ago. When we played West Ham he told the players "you're not fit, you're not this, you're not that".

I said 'but the problem is we don't have any plan in the game, we don't know how to press as a team’. It's not about just running around, you need to play with your brain.

After West Ham he said all of the team is not fit. After Liverpool, because the performance was so good, he said everything was perfect. What, in one week, he changed the fitness? Impossible.
