Because it sure as hell isn't black metal, or very metal-ish at all. Also Wongraven(Sigurd Wongraven aka Satyr of the black metal band Satyricon)'s "Fjelltronen" from 1995. Holy poo poo I didn't know this was from Varg Vikernes until after I listened to it

Yeah, it's not actually what I first think about when I hear Burzum. I do like it, though. Much more than his "usual" stuff. Just bought "Sôl austan, Mâni vestan" on 12", and it's wonderful. Only thing that irks me is having to get up to flip the sides or put on the other record when I'm all tranquil and blissful in my recliner.

If you enjoy Eno's Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror, the selections below have a similar feel and most are very piano/reverb-centric. Lucky I found this post. I copped The Pearl after my 3rd listen through, was hoping if anyone found more collab with Budd because I think he's great

Hlidskjalf is my favorite Burzum album aside from Hvis. I mostly like it because it sounds like the Runescape soundtrack. The genre is commonly referred to as "Dungeon Synth". A lot of the projects still have black metal vocals though, so they might be off-putting. A lot of Summoning's releases edge close to dungeon synth in my opinion. Take Nightshade Forests for example - the guitar is pushed way into the background and the synths carry basically all the melody. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJto61o1SwQ Funeral doom metal has some similar traits. Thergothon, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOICPaHgwAg

Anyone have any recommendations for similar sounds to Ark Patrol (https://soundcloud.com/arkpatrol)? I'm normally into more disco-style stuff but really digging some chill piano sounds lately.

Akira Kosemura - "Polaroid Piano" and "It's On Everything" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXss9tK1DGc are just chillout piano stuff through and through. Nujabes also used a lot of piano in his works, like this track from the album "Spiritual State" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-N-Y0Ztn8A4. Looking for guidance in navigating "minimalist" composers e.g. Philip Glass, Steve Reich, La Monte Young, etc., and there doesn't seem to be a better thread to look for said guidance than this one. I've thus far listened to "Music for 18 Musicians" by Steve Reich and "Glassworks" by Philip Glass, the latter of which I especially liked. "Glassworks" is referred to by Glass himself as an intro into his work, but his discography is a bit daunting. So, I'm looking for what you Goons believe to be standout works of his, or any other must-listen minimalist stuff.

My favorite pieces by Glass are somewhat less minimalist than his other works, its his string quartets. Kronos Quartet has an album of them. They were written I believe early in his career, maybe even in his student days, and don't go into the extreme repetitions of his later styles. In fact there are elements of them that I would even call Romantic. In any case, they are very beautiful and have been some of my favorite pieces of music for decades. If you are looking for the style of minimalist music he is more known for I would suggest checking out his opera Einstein on the Beach and his piece Music with Changing Parts. The latter especially is a classic example of one of his more minimalist pieces and very rigidly adheres to that form and evolves slowly over time. As for other composers I definitely recommend John Adams who has some great pieces in this direction. Shaker Loops in particular. Harmonielehre and Nixon in China are also good places to start with Adams, less minimalist but also very good. Steve Reich's pieces that focus on single instruments such as Violin Phase are quite interesting. And I definitely recommend The Desert Music which is based on the poetry of William Carlos Williams and so incorporates lyrics into this style of music in a really cool way.

WARNING: MINIMALISM / AMBIENT WESTERN ART MUSIC SCRUBZONE. ENTRY AT OWN RISK Here are a list of popular composers that usually get thrown in the minimalism camp but to be honest whats a genre anwyay Steve Reich You of course know Music for 18, and there's two other compositions I particularly like of that era which is Music For A Large Ensemble and Octet (1979). They're like a power trio of his best work. The rest of Reich is to taste, but he's easy to get into because he starts with minimalism proper in the 60's (Pendulum Music, Piano Phase), and slowly develops his voice in the early 70s (Music For Mallet, Voices and Organ), before going full blown with the aforementioned classics. Another notable work is Different Trains which is more difficult but one of the most powerful and unsettling things I've ever heard Arvo Part "Holy" minimalism. Has some very obvious poo poo like Fur Alina, but his finest hour is Fratres (get the Violin and Piano version from 1980) Phil Glass Staggering discography, just dive into it and listen until you find something. I love Glassworks and the Kyoanisqatsi or however its spelt soundtrack. Einstein On The Beach is also wicked if you get a good recording John Cage Get "In A Landscape / Dream" cause its well accessible. Good luck with the rest. He's not a minimalist. whatevs Denis Johnson "November" - written in 1959- this is some ahead of its time minimalism. Extremely my poo poo Erik Satie Get a collection of his Piano Works, whatever has the Gymnopedies of course. But poo poo like "Les trois valses distinguées du précieux dégoûté" is also good Hans Otte Aquarian Music and The Book Of Sounds is great Ingram Marshall Love this guy. Foggy, cinematic minimalism. "Fog Tropes" is basically ambient music. "Kingdom Come" also good John Adams Shaker Loops is great, everything else is... meh John Luther Adams Don't mistake him for the above dude. Dive into his discography. I love "Dark Waves" La Monte Young The godfather. Impenetrable discography. Good luck 13 I 73 5:35-6:14:03 PM NYC From Map Of 49's Dream The Two Systems Of Eleven Sets Of Galactic Intervals Ornamental Lightyears Tracery Composition 1960 #7 (Excerpt 1) Well Tuned Piano Meredith Monk Book of Days.
