DoD was the best. The maps I remember loving were caen, charlie, walmart, and legoland. Also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T02XgRFGEeE VVV There was a community ported dod_dust, it sucked. Jehde fucked around with this message at 00:14 on Feb 13, 2015 |

I love DoD. Been playing it from the early beta (when you still had bandages to use to stop bleeding) I loved it so much I bought the silver edition of Half Life 2 just to get the early access to DoD: Source. While the fewer maps, the lack of iron sights on many weapons, and the changes in general were a bit of a slam at first, I've pretty much moved over these days. It did spur me to wee new game journalism piece on my experiences with the game, the last night before DoD: Source came out. Midnight On the Firing Line Crazy times and an amazing experience. Still love playing it.

I used to play this game with my dad at an Internet cafe every weekend. My dad still plays this game every day. Apparently there's still lots of servers up full of bored middle aged dads and mainland Chinese.

oh poo poo the trenches man, I was heavily involved in nerding it up with that community. Same with the specialists where I was a kung fu master. Those games were dope, and we will never see their like again due to how hard it is to mod poo poo nowadays*. *althought double action boogaloo might shape up well

dod_anzio!! One of the best maps in any combat FPS ever. Caen was great too. I was exclusively a knifer for a long time under the name "Pinion." All I used were grenades and the knife for weapons as an American rifleman and I killed many people with my knife hunting skillz as I got really good at it. One of my favorite strategies was to let myself be spotted in the middle of a firefight and time a dash into a familiar area where the Krauts were holding ground just to try to lure people to chase me. I got swift enough where I could quickly hide somewhere in a room or simply just turn behind door entrances and exits immediately after I cross them and crouch and wait for enemies to run by. When they come through: backstab bitch. Or just listen to their footsteps and pop out right into their face and hit em one after another. When I would pop out at people like that they would tend to freak out or get confused and miss whatever frantic shots they had taken. Ive eliminated whole squads in seconds on Anzio, Avalanche, and Caen using such cleverly powerful strategy. Primed grenade traps were fun too. DoD 1.0 - 1.3 is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. Source totally blew. What a disappointment. "MG42 UP AHEAD!!!"

I still play on my old clan's server sometimes. One of the dudes still pays for it, the clan still plays a few nights a month. I've been playing on that server since I think 3.1? or 1.0? I ran poo poo for a bit too, it was somethin' else. Maybe I will go play that instead of Battlefield tonight.

I reinstalled the retail version because I couldn't figure out how to get 3.1 working with steam. I instantly found a nearly full dod_caen server that I ended up playing a single match for an hour, it hasn't changed a bit.

Red Orchestra had tanks. One time I got ten kills in a singles shot as a Tiger tank firing an explosive shell into a building.

My best gaming memory is from the hedgerow para map on a server that didnt show death messages. I snuck around the allied team using hedgerows as cover , and used my trusty hitler youth knife to silently shank most of the enemy team from behind. When the next round loaded up everyone on my team thought it was the funniest thing they ever saw. Throwing grenades in crawlspaces was great too , it somehow amplified them over a large part of certain maps like avalanche and anzio, and killed half of the enemy team.

RO really owns and one of my best gaming memories was teaming up with a stranger in a tank and going on a 5 tank killing spree, but DoD scratches a different itch. RO is more spergy and slow paced where as DoD is arcadey and faster.

I wonder why DoD:S ended up being such a letdown, I feel that even the maps were pretty boring given how they tended to go for linear slugfest design.

DoD:S is fine, but it was half assed. Half the weapons, no brits, barely any maps, etc. Plus the typical GoldSrc -> Source growing pains. I remember being hyped as gently caress from this trailer though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOsDkhLwPj4 Also DoD is by far the best implementation of the whole point capture multiplayer FPS thing. Battlefield is the current popular iteration but it's just a clusterfuck of who cares. DoD was tight, focused, and good.

DoD:S also had a weird floaty things to everything and things like the weapons didn't feel as sastifying/well defined for some reason. It also had lazy map design avoid the more complex DoD map style which had more options and long routes to reach the objective safer.
