-----

Well, to be fair, we did make it back to Tazmily like what we planned.

As did you, after you bet on me. I think that for a while, I'm gonna act like a fat worm and hide myself inside a hole. So don't talk to me. The heroic and cool Rope Snake you once knew is dead. In a tiny, quiet voice, I say... So long.

r.i.p. Rope Snake's ego.

Anyway, there's a few things we can check out before going on to the next needle. Like that arrow, for instance.

I'm a not-very-rare Imitation Crab! Real crabs try to copy our taste, color, and texture, but we just look the other way. What CAN'T be overlooked, though, is Tanetane Island south of here. You're headed there too, right? I pretty much knew before I even saw ya. You can wait all you want, but no ship's gonna come. You gotta walk across the ocean. First, talk to the sea. Get up real nice and close. And then everything'll start from there.

First off, we get an explanation on how to get to Tanetane Island, which is where we'll find the next needle.

Next, we can see Rope Snake living up to his promise.

Earlier, I told you I was gonna act like a fat worm and hide myself in a hole...but snakes and worms are completely different things! Just because they're both long doesn't make them the same! Y'know?! Snakes aren't worms! I know I said differently, but I take it back now. Anyways, I hear everyone's heading into the city to try to make it big. I'm gonna go, too. Yessiree.

You're gonna freak out, I'm gonna be so huge! But don't worry. That behemoth of a snake will always be your friend. Well, catch ya later, in the big city!

We can also check in on Wess, who has new dialogue now that we have Duster again.

Duster! So, you've finally remembered that you're the Duster? Wahaha-hahaha! I see! I see! That's great. Lucas... Thank you for going out of your way to tell me about Duster. Princess... Thank you very much. Say, Duster... Be thankful to Lucas and his friends. Make sure you're helpful to them. Anyways, let's meet again sometime. We'll kick up our feet and take it easy. Now get going already! This is embarrassing...

Though Alec's dialogue still doesn't change, even though Duster is right there.

The last new thing is a brand new vehicle to replace that Mr. Saturn coffee table.

It's identical to the Pork Bean except you don't need to charge it. And that it looks much better.

Also Saturn Valley is open again, though this is the only new dialogue there.

Beating up the enemies around Saturn Valley got me some levels and some new PSI, at least. Healing Gamma is for Lucas only, and is the same as Healing Beta except Gamma can revive KOed people. Very handy since Lucas will usually be last-man-standing anyway. Meanwhile, Freeze Gamma is the next step up for Kumatora, doing 320-350 single-target ice damage to an enemy for 18PP. It becomes Kumatora's main method of offense for most bosses and high-defense enemies.

And with that, let's start our next adventure.

Welcome to the ocean floor.

Whew... I know they supply us with oxygen, but these machines just aren't my thing... They're really demoralizing.

The theme of this entire section is "Interesting to watch, but a pain in the butt to play." First off, you have an oxygen meter since our heroes can't breathe water. If it runs out, you're swept back to the beach no matter how far in you are. Thankfully, there's no other penalty and you're right next to free healing (you can talk to the relaxing Bronson to heal) and a save frog, but that is progress lost. It definitely happens to me a few times while navigating this place, especially since there's a lot of side-paths with loot.

Don't forget to supply yourself with oxygen while underwater. Use the oxygen supply machines efficiently and effectively.

Like pretty much any other game with a limited air mechanic, there are ways to replenish that air supply.

That said, this game has the most unique one I've certainly seen. It actually takes several seconds for the machine to refill each character under the pink background (you can tell by the kissy noises), I just edited out of the GIF for your convenience. It's time-consuming and rather annoying when/if the novelty wears off.

And of course there's some new enemies loitering around.

Rooound Fish are on the more annoying side of encounters. Their attacks are alright, and they can drain stats.

They are also incredibly susceptible to sleep, so that's handy.

Their big thing is Freeze Beta, which hurts a good bit, so best to take them out quickly (Thunder helps in this area as you'd expect) and hope sleep sticks while you wail on them.

This place is big and pretty long, but it's also filled with plenty of goodies. The Virgo Bracelet is a nice upgrade for Kumatora with a bonus PP boost.

Seriously, look at how long this place is.

Next up are Navy SQUEALs.

They can tickle characters and shoot beams and the usual Pigmask stuff.

They can also just leave because why not.

Wall Staples work pretty well on these guys though and will make fighting them a joke.

At the bottom of the first screen are two paths. The right one leads further into the dungeon, the left one leads to a pretty cool item.

I'm a real hard worker, so I'm gonna make it big in life. I'm talking BIG here! Maybe even bigger than a whale!

I'm a real crybaby. All I ever do is cry. It might be my fault that the ocean's so salty.

There's also fish we can talk to.

I lose oxygen before I could talk to that one.

The trick is to go to the right path first and refill on oxygen there, as otherwise you won't have enough oxygen to do the left path.

Of course, even doing so the timing is a bit strict to get to the next oxygen station.

Carefree Jellyfish... OK, this one I never really fought fairly because it's incredibly easy to get back attacks on these guys. I never even saw one turn around, let alone get an attack off on me because they die quickly too. Think of them as free EXP.

At the end of this side path is some nice treasure and a tougher enemy.

Fish Roe Man is essentially a mini-boss, with around 1800 HP and high offense.

Here's Freeze Gamma in action.

You'll want to use your Shields for this fight since this guy can hurt.

For instance, he can attack three different characters if he wants.

He also has the best death attack I've seen.

Anyway, Fish Roe Man himself isn't as interesting as the chest he guards, the Awesome Crown. It's the third-best headgear Lucas can get defense-wise, which is saying...not much, really.

The big thing is the 30PP Lucas gains on top of that. That's almost one extra casting of Love Gamma! Of course, it's also more PP for shields and healing and all that other stuff that Lucas excels at.

Are you an enemy? An enemy of all fishkind?

No:

Huh? You're not going to fight? Even though we're enemies? Oh, well. Whatever.

Yes:

No, you shouldn't do that. Fighting isn't nice. It's like they say, "Claw me and I'll claw thee." Treasure the fish you catch. No, wait! Don't catch fish! Let's all get along. Well, later! Bye!

He was like, "You're such a loser! You deserve to crawl around the sea floor without a shell!" He was just so mean and hurtful! He might as well have just thrown saltwater in my eyes.

There's a small sidequest where we can be nice and get this guy's shell back. I'll do it because I have sympathy for a non-existent hermit crab represented in a video game.

Further in there's a broken oxygen machine just to mess with you.

But there's a working one further in so it's all good.

(Alternate Music)

The last regular enemy is a Rock Lobster, which is the most annoying of the bunch due to its high defense and offense.

This is how much Duster and Boney do to it. It's good to have Duster lower their defenses while Kumatora uses Thunder Beta to fry them.

Near the end, there's an area with a bunch of holes with treasure in them.

The lower-left one should be your first visit since it has an oxygen machine.

Most of these items aren't that exciting, though there's a ton of much-appreciated PP-recovery items in the area.

There's also the hermit crab's shell.

The Rock Lobster's same as the rest, but they all have a 10% chance of dropping this. It restores 180HP.

Anyway, let's backtrack and give this back.

If we say no,

I appreciate that. I'll use this opportunity to continue my cold and embarrassing training for a while more.

But let's not be jerks and give it back.

I can't give you anything in return, but I do have some cash, if that's okay with you! How much shall I give you? 1000 DP or so? Please accept it!

At this point, 1000 DP is like making $15. Not a big amount, but enough to be happy about it.

Anyway, we're finally nearing the end of this place.

There, you'll find the forbidden... There, you'll find the forbidden... The forbidden... What was it again? There's a forbidden what-was-it-again there!

Kumatora picks up this, which lowers all enemies' defenses. See my argument against Offense Down Omega earlier.

I am Frogman. *gaakkkkkkk* *blub* *blub* Save your game?

It's kinda hard to tell, but Frogman is a frog with a scuba suit on.

At this point, we get caught into a whirlpool.

Master Eddy is the boss of this dungeon, and as usual the difficulty comes down to "Are you using buffs? If so, this boss is easy! If not, this boss is difficult!"

Master Eddy's main attack is a whirlpool that deals significant damage to all characters.

It's vulnerable to shields, though. Halving that damage obviously makes Master Eddy significantly less scary, albeit a boss I still have to use healing items on.

Duster and Boney should just attack while Kumatora uses Thunder and Lucas heals or reapplies Shields.

Master Eddy will also attack twice, though this is more an annoyance to get rid of shields than anything remotely threatening.

Master Eddy isn't too bad if you use Shields. Of course, once he goes down he has one final attack.

This attack does mortal damage and removes all of our items. Yikes!

Next time, uh... Let's just hope there is a next time.

You experience the highs (the weird entertaining stuff that happens this section), I experience the lows (actually playing through it).

Took me over two hours to play through this part, much more than usual for a section. No resets from monsters, just a lot of tedious crap. A lot of that was this dungeon being so long and sending me back a few times from running out of air, but the next update is also tedious gameplay-wise. Probably the worst part of the game gameplay-wise besides Chapter 3 with Salsa.

At least we didn't die, thanks in part to the oxygen machines it seems like.

Where are we...? Tanetane Island? drat... All our items got washed away, and we have no energy left... Let's try to find something to eat.

Can you hear me?!?! This is an emergency message!!! Your guys' energy is at its very lowest!! It's fallen as low as it can get!

We're in a bad spot. Everyone is at 1HP/0PP and have no items other than equipment.

I was the frog that shouted that emergency message just now. Various circumstances led me to be inside this snake. Anyway, never mind that. You should probably save your game. Will you?

It's certainly a good idea to.

Ribbit, ribbit! Will the snake's gastric juices win, or will my focused determination prevail? I didn't get swallowed - this is actually a one-on-one, all-out battle.

If you say so.

There's some food here, but it looks odd.

On the other hand, a Zombieshroom prevents us from going onward.

And considering we have no way of healing and he has a party-wide attack, and we're kinda in a bad spot.

Eat them anyway?

If we say no...

But there doesn't seem to be anything else that's edible.

They have a funky-looking color, but they're okay to eat, right?

Looks like we have no choice!

Boney decides to sit out from eating the mushrooms. What a square.

You're overcome by an indescribably odd sensation...!

Everyone ended up restoring all their stats, even Boney, who didn't eat the mushrooms!

The snake also turned into an umbrella but that's no biggie.

Because you might get cramps since you just recently ate, of course.

Also, instead of that Zombieshroom Flint's now here.

Boney's freaking out barking his head off the entire time. I guess he's just really happy to see Flint again!

Anyway, we aren't lost, Flint.

It looks like we're butting heads against a guy with no head!

Since we're next to those wonderful mushrooms there's no reason to hold back on PSI. Just remember you still have no items.

This guy has the same party-wide spore attack that Zombieshroom had. When you can survive it, you'll find out it can also poison characters.

The usual buffs/debuffs apply, of course.

Anyway, you probably know the real identity of this guy, and as you might expect he's weak to fire.

This is the smile's physical attack, though it does pathetic damage.

Anyway, once you bring the smile down to low enough HP, you'll see its true identity, in this case a Zombieshroom.

Though it's still called Eerie Smile by the game itself.

A good deal of HP to burn through, but otherwise pretty simple.

Anyway, the trippy way further into Tanetane Island is now unlocked and stuff so let's eat more mushrooms.

mmmmmmmm

There's two screens of familiar faces we can talk to. Boney hates them all for some reason.

It was my fault you lost full use of your left leg. I'm sorry... Don't leave me again.

Nah, we've got things to do.

You ungrateful child. You would make anyone cry.

This is the only such conversation I had that didn't end up in a battle.

The items you get along the way are in fact what they say they are. Trash cans never lie.

There are mailboxes along the way.

The boy named Lucas is crying at a grave.
The boy named Lucas and his dog are loitering in the forest.
The boy named Lucas is getting into trouble in the mountains.
The boy named Lucas stole Nuts from our garden.
The boy named Lucas is bullying animals.
The boy named Lucas learned some bad magic.
The boy named Lucas ......
The boy named Lucas ......
The boy named Lucas ......
The boy named Lucas .........
The mailbox let out a tremendous scream.

Next up is... Oh, crap! Claus is alive!

Say, Lucas. Whatcha up to?

Sorry, Claus. We're on important business and considering you've been lost for three years you're probably not at a high enough level to join us.

You won't let me join in? Why not? Why not? Why won't you let me join in?

At this point, every conversation leads to a battle with an Eerie Smile. There are three types you can run into. You won't know for sure at first which is which, but after revealing their identities the first time you can figure out which is which based on the background and music.

Boney can also sniff them to give you their weaknesses. If you're using a guide, that will be enough to tell you what enemy they really are. This guy's also susceptible to sleep.

This particular foe can laugh pretty hard.

This is a Monkalrus. I'll go into more detail on them later.

There are four mailboxes here.

Inside the mailbox were countless screams.

Stuffed inside the mailbox was sheer, never-ending darkness.

Inside the mailbox was the sound of yourself crying.

Inside the mailbox was absolutely nothing. Nothing after nothing came bursting out.

You hid me, didn't you?

Here's the second type of Eerie Smile, and the easiest of the lot.

It's an Ancient Dragonfly, and it has very low defenses and HP so it goes down in a round.

Don't do aaaanything. Don't see anyone. Just sleep. It'll be oh, so much fun......! Ohohohoho!

The Monkalrus can drop a Luxury Banana. This is also real.

Everyone's waiting to throw rocks at you, spit on you, and make your life hell. Who's "everyone"...? Everyone you love.

Again, each of these results in an encounter. I'm gonna skip all the repeats though.

A helmet for Lucas and Boney. It prevents fleas and has the same defense boost as the Awesome Crown. I like the 30PP more than the flea protection for Lucas, so Boney gets it.

...Or so it seemed, but you were the one looking from the other side, too.

She's waiting for you with fresh-made Omelets. She's waiting. SHE'S WAITING FOR YOU!

This is the last type of enemy.

It's a Titanian and pretty sturdy.

You haven't eaten? You haven't eaten? You haven't eaten? You haven't eaten?

Lucas. Lucas. Let's switch places. You're more... You're more...

Prevents sleep, slightly less defense boost than the Alligator Hat. Boney and Kumatora can wear it, so Kumatora gets it.

................. You're scary. You're you're you're you're you're TOO TOO TOO TOO TOO ssss ssss sssscary scary.

What? She's not coming back? Why, did you do something to her? Huh? I did it to her? Hinawa isn't coming back? Who are you? What did you do? It's time for supper. It's time for supper.

Next screen has a nearby hot spring and more characters.

For some reason, Boney doesn't want to join us. Weird dog.

drat straight.

I can talk forever and ever about how it was Lucas's fault I wound up in trouble. Lucas did it. Lucas did it. Lucas did it.

Wh wh wh whoo whoooo who w w w were w w wwwww were you yyou youuu y you again? Hyahahahahahaha!!!!!!!

And where is this thing? There is no such thing. Let's hurry home now. Needle? A needle, you say? Are you the needle? Don't be stupid. I oughta pull you!
Lucas! We finally meet again! It's me. Claus. Touch my heart. See how it beats in and out? Lucas! There's noooothing to worry about now. It's me! Claus!

These two jump you together, though still no biggie.

She's like a stick no one loves.

A shiny car. It's scary even when it's stopped.

A needle's stuck in you?! I'll take it! I'll take the needle for you!

Pusher's the only person who doesn't try to attack us.

Truths are lies, and lies are truths. You, you're all lies.

Eventually, we make it to wherever the hell this place is.

The frog's pretty nice to us, at least, willing to save our game and all.

You're weak! You're weak! Lotus rooooot!

We end up at what's probably a Magypsy home? Looks like she's entertaining company.

Isn't she pretty?

...You people stink.

Oh, wait a minute... Might you be Lucas, Kumatora, and Duster?

We sure are! I think.

...Wow, you guys really stink. Ionia told me about you. I'm Mixolydia, one of the Magypsies. If that's too hard to remember, "Mixo"...no, "Missy" will do just fine.

Just a tiny bite of those mushrooms will cause terrible hallucinations. Powerful hallucinations that tear at your weaknesses and the scars in your heart. But I'll bring you back to your senses now.

And so, Mixolydia uses mystical Magypsie healing techniques to bring our party out of their funk.

Much better.

I'm amazed you even made it this far after eating those horrid things.

I sense that "the time" has come, too. So whenever you want to pull it, go ahead... That's assuming you can get rid of the special barrier I set up to protect it, of course... Oh, I almost forgot.

Be sure to thank him.

By the way, this is Ocho.

Picking up those things along the beach is known as "beachcombing", and I just looove it.

Oh? Looks like you're holding too many things. I'll hold onto this for a little while longer, then.

And we got back all those worthless items I never use! Since we grabbed stuff along the way, Ocho will hold on to the stuff he can't give us due to our small invetory room.

Anyway, now we can see Tanetane Island for all its glory.

The Mole Cricket has some fun new goodies. The Spiky Weapon is usable by all the humans and is a nice upgrade for all of them, so I buy three. Of course, Lucas has a better weapon in the next area, so it's not really worth giving it to him. The Feather Charm is also a nice body upgrade for everyone but Boney (who's happy with his collar), and the Libra Bracelet is a nice accessory upgrade for the humans. The Spiky Weapon is also the first weapon that is stronger than the special boots Duster got back in Chapter 5, so we finally say goodbye to them.

Also, the guy who we saw as Pusher was actually the Item Guy. Everyone else was enemies, of course.

That hot spring Boney didn't want to get into? Sludge.

Not that relaxing now, sadly...

Fortunately, there is an actual hot spring in the nearby building.

And of course the enemies we saw earlier are hanging around, and there's no mailboxes anymore. I'll go into more detail on these enemies next update.

Next time, we finish up our business in this crazy weird place.

When I climbed into the "hot spring" and Boney didn't, I was like "Maybe I shouldn't be in here, Boney hasn't steered me wrong yet."

My memory's fuzzy, but I think since I got out before the "hot spring" took effect, Mixolydia didn't have the lines about stinking.

<click> <click> What is it with this dancing?! Bouncing around like fools... I would have thought my own kind at least would understand the seriousness of our Adventurer's Guild!

Yeah, "Missy" won't say anything about you stinking if you didn't go in there. Also, if you happen to come here without Duster, you won't see the non-attacky Wess at the beginning, though I forget exactly who's there and what they say; might be Flint. The rarer "woman" that appears in the Hot Spring during this time would be Ionia.

Something mechanically interesting: If you say yes to the Claus that wants to join you, he'll temporarily follow behind your party like a fifth party member, but after some time passes or you open your menu, he'll say something and get a guaranteed ambush on you. The game is meant to be able to support five party members at a time solely for this scene, it seems. Using a debug menu or other methods to put in other party members works, sorta, but it's all wonky. You can put an NPC there and have it be mostly fine for battles though.

I love how Boney whines and otherwise acts like a real dog when we decide to eat the mushrooms, bathe in sludge, and blithely chat up enemies. This segment was perfectly unsettling for me on my playthrough, and I understand Itoi actually toned down Tanetane Island after he found his first round of temporary dialogue "so unpleasant [he] couldn't stand to look at it."

Moonside is an acid trip, but at least it's caused by a statue that creates illusions. Mother 3 isn't quite as nuanced when it comes to your party tripping balls. Plus, Moonside has better music than Tanetane Island's jarring cacophony.

In addition to dropping Luxury Bananas, Monkalruses also have a 3% chance of giving up Mystical Gloves, which is Kumatora's best weapon. There's at least one other pair of gloves that offer a bigger offensive boost, but Mystical Gloves also give her other stats a boost, just like Duster's Mystical Shoes. I like grinding for them when high on mushrooms- not-Salsa and "Who are you again" not-Alec are Monkalruses and they respawn when you change screens. The not-hot spring is nearby so it's the perfect area. There's no good reason to not get them, since you're going to need the experience and levels anyway.
