Sour Diesel posted:there was a ds9 ep about this Yeah that's what made me ask. It was kiiinda about that in the sense that Kira told Quark to gently caress right off but it scratched the surface and didn't go farther. Like, is it strictly illegal? Say it's not Kira and it's just some random person using a holosuite so Quark can scan you without being a creepo hiding with a camera about it. Then he uses that holoimage in a sex program. Is that illegal? Rape? Super creepy yeah but is it even unethical? Presumably it's just your image; not your personality or even you in any sense of the word. Seems like if we ever have VR sex programs it's gonna be an issue we will have to tackle at some point. I guess if there's no consent given to scan and save your holoimage then it becomes stealing or virtual sexual harassment or something. oldpainless posted:They can't not consent! I remember that it was apparently a huge crime to walk in on someone while on the holodeck but I guess it was okay to do that if it was Barclay in there.

Janeway and Picard are always all "Hmmmm, do we let this planet full of billions of sapient beings get obliterated, or do we break some arbitrary starfleet regulation? Gosh this is quite the pickle of a moral quandary for sure." The funniest loving episode of TNG is the one with Worf's brother trying to convince them to help a bunch of people about to be obliterated in a planet-wide apocalypse. He even comes up with a plan to do it so they wouldn't even know it was done and everything, win/win, and the crew is like "Nope!" Then they all stand there on the bridge and watch the planet die because gently caress yeah, front row seats! ... to top it all off his plan works except for one guy who figures it out and kills himself (Yeah, ONE dude) and they still exile him for being some kind of criminal because.. uh.. helping people who don't know how to make warp drives is terrible don't you know? They could have literally saved ten times as many people if they hadn't been dicks too. The only tension in the entire episode is because one guy had to do it by himself without anyone's help so it's a little broken. ED: What's hilarious is if those people had been Romulans they would have gone out of their way to save them even though that always ends in betrayal every single time. Prime Directive though: How do we know that the race he saved won't eventually develop warp drive and enslave the entire Galaxy? If Nikolai had just gone out and grabbed a beer and a blunt and watched that planet get destroyed from Ten-Forward, the Alpha Quadrant would be saved.

To tie this back in to the earlier holodeck conversation: instead of having the holodeck simulate the engine designer and then have her come up with ideas Geordi could presumably have just gone "Computer download all files about [forgot her name]. Computer, come up with solution to this problem I'm having with the engine." Oh right but he's got to collaborate with her right (fapfapfap).

in Hollow Pursuits Riker says that creating your crewmates in the holodeck and loving them is against Starfleet Regulations but then Troi corrects him and says actually there is no such regulation. Riker says there ought to be a rule against it I don't know why; there's no victim (besides holograms but those don't count)
