I could honestly see him just angling for a position in the next democratic administration to stay in power. With Jindal and Huckabee openly calling for the dissolution of the Supreme Court, right wing groups demanding resistance, and the Governor of Texas issuing a public statement to the effects of "The Supreme Court can't tell Texas what to do" there is literally no reason anyone who didn't vote GOP in 2012 would even consider voting in 2016. For all the "Oh another Clinton" the only other option is a theocratic dictator who promises to disband the parts of the constitution they don't like and their only platform is "undo the last 8 years asap".

Probably has something to do with it. Santorum. And possibly Jindal, depending on when you define that era as ending. And possibly Kasich, depending on whether you count him as an actual candidate since nobody gives a poo poo about him. (To be fair, that applies to Jindal as well.)

The entire GOP platform is a sinking ship in the 21st century--and the only thing he is doing is alienating his base. I don't remember a time when the GOP was so incredibly fractured and extremist. GHWB was mostly reasonable, and Reagan wasn't overtly lovely while he destroyed the middle-class. W was a fucktard from the jump, but unapologetically so--and he wasn't particularly extremist in any way, even if he rode a wave of nationalism to two trillion-dollar wars. But literally every GOP candidate from the past two elections has been either a beep-boop robot or too much of a fundie retard to get any traction. It's kind of amazing.

I'm sure they have individual strategies, but the strategy that has a chance of working is one they're all essentially participating in - pander enough to win the primary, then present as a "reasonable" candidate in the general election, then hope that the economy goes bad / Hillary develops a health problem / Hillary eats a baby on live television, and win by default. e: simply being The Republican Candidate will assure the GOP nominee 47% of the national vote. Since all the actual candidates are so bad, the remaining 3.1% is probably going to have to come from things outside of their control (unless you count voter suppression). I look forward to my kids learning about the time Obama sent in the national guard to force Texas Clerks of Court to marry gay people. Also to the amazing, impotent, poo poo storm when President Clinton fills the vacated seat of one of the conservative justices, ushering in a new age of liberal socialist dictator Supreme Court rulings. Not only do you have to get gay married, but it has to be a vegan reception. If I'm remembering correctly, history shows that you must either be at Andrew Jackson levels of not giving a poo poo, or Lincoln levels of in the poo poo before you ignore the Supreme Court. So until you let a man shoot you just so you can properly line up a neck shot or are President during Civil War 2, President You is going to back down and abide by the Court's ruling.

Bernie Sanders has the Jesse Jackson problem. I'm gonna go ahead and coin that phrase. By this, I mean a lot of people down the ballot, especially in the swing congressional and gubernatorial races, are gonna have a hard time campaigning with him. Holding the presidency without any majorities and with governorships and state house numbers in the teens is almost worthless except for bureaucratic reasons.

What happened in the Republican party is that Reagan [PBUH] won and the movement's ideas are now the orthodoxy.

It will be interesting to see if Kasich is able to make it to the top tier debates. I have doubts. Wonder where he is going to announce from. EDIT: Apparently, Kasich talked about his position on same-sex marriage on Face the Nation, earlier today. quote:KASICH: I think we need to take a deep breath. I personally believe in traditional marriage, but the Supreme Court has ruled and it's the law of the land. We'll abide by it. I think everyone needs to take a deep breath to see how this evolves. Religious institutions, religious entities, you know like the Catholic Church, need to be honored as well, but I think there's an ability to strike a balance. You know, as Governor, you learn how to strike a balance. Sometimes you get into an argument, but what you want to do as a public official is look for solutions where you can create more win-wins. I look forward to seeing what effect Obergefell will have as a whole on the Republican party in the elections. Will they be emboldened, demoralized, or unaffected? Will it affect the voter base in any meaningful way? Will Hillary figure out a way to spin this into a positive for her campaign? Will nobody give a poo poo about any of this come voting day November?
