I'm not really sure what I did, but I ended up with three tabs of that song popping open, each one offset by about 30 seconds. It was thoroughly unnerving. And hey, sure they slipped some stuff past Nintendo, but at least they caught on to the threat gambling poses to the youth.

Ok, first off, that music link? Absolutely hilarious. But yeah, if anyone new to this game thinks this is bad, just wait till you get into the Pokemon Tower. I'm STILL, to this day, amazed at the stuff that somehow got past the censors in there, especially considering how strict Nintendo usually was with their localizations.

The remakes, Firered and Leafgreen changed a few things, I believe Pokemon Tower was mostly untouched, some of the trainer dialogue inside the tower was altered and the Gamber class of trainer was renamed to Gamer, in addition the slot machines in Celadon City were also rendered unusable, being replaced with the god awful Voltorb Flip, that was down to EU Regulations about gambling though.

That was Hg/Ss, since the EU clamped down on the slot machines in Platinum, but were untouched in the other versions of that game.

Japan still had the Game Corner instead of Voltorb Flip in Hg/Ss, but from Gen 5 onwards, the Game Corner is no longer a thing.

Well, button presses do change the state of the RNG, so they do have an effect on chances. But if you're not a tool-assisted speedrunner, you have no way of knowing if pressing a button at that time increases or decreases the chance.

I do down B on pokeballs too, I also tapped the pokeball on the touch screen for Diamond/Pearl. Voltorb Flip would be great if the boards were always generated in a way that they required no guessing. As-is it just comes down to random chance, which is no fun.

Update 13: 2spooky

Well this is depressing.

Ikue is not a fan of this place. Me neither.

:smith:

"Bless you!"

This is definitely a weird tonal shift, but I appreciate it. I played this game when I was younger and knew about death and all that, so to see this game so brazenly talk about it and so sincirely was definitely different. I like that all aspects of the Pokemon universe are explored and this is something they never shy away from in the series.

Death is a part of life and kids understand that. It's similar to the family pet dying, so they can relate.

"up to mischief!"

Ghosts, meanwhile, are totally fictional and don't exist and you can't prove it!

But what's more depressing then death?

"brings you here?"

: Your POKEMON don't look dead! I can at least make them faint! Let's go, pal!

#022: Fearow

Now his team becomes more interesting.

To an extent...

He does have some new Pokemon though.

But since we've gotten a bit overleveled, it's not much of a challenge. He can also have a Magnemite depending on his team composition. Hmm, Water, Fire and Electric. Where have I seen that before...

I think we need a new rival, this one's a bit rubbish.

Suuuuuure.

: I just caught a CUBONE! I can't find the grown-up MAROWAK yet! I doubt there are any left!

: Well, I better get going! I've got a lot to accomplish, pal! Smell ya later!

Douche is a dick.

"wayward GHOSTs!"

: A SILPH SCOPE might be able to unmask them.

I'm sure it won't be important. On the third floor, we'll start encountering trainers and wild Pokemon.

I will try and avoid as many trainers as I can, since not a lot of my Pokemon can do much to them and they really don't need more experience.

Ah, one of my favorites, GHOST. Not a very original design or name, but that applies to a lot of Gen 1 Pokemon, I suppose.

While we can't unmask its true form, we can always fight it.

:stare:

O-okay, that is a bit creepy, but we're fine, we're fine.

Crap.

So we can't do anything to this GHOST, we have to escape.

#092: Gastly

These ones we can see. Though Ghost is not a good attacking type it's immune to Normal and Fighting so Ikue is the only one that can really damage them.

Night Shade (Naito Heddo: Night Head) is one of two Ghost moves and is technically the best one. It does damage equal to the user's level, but hits all types, so it's okaaaaay? Iiiiiish? I dunno.

"SIPLH SCOPE."

It's implied that the ghosts are possessing their trainers in anger due to Marowak's death. Or they're dicks.

So we'll have to stick with Ikue, since Wukong and Vegeta won't be too helpful. And we'll just remove wild encounters.

Not too hard to get to the stairs if you dodge the crazy ladies.

There are some trainers we can't avoid, annoyingly.

Confuse Ray (Ayashiihikari: Eerie Light) is a terrible move because it confuses your Pokemon 100% of the time and I hate it and everything has it and ugggggggggggh.

"the GHOSTs."

Yes, yes, I'm just here for a fool's errand.

Doesn't mean I won't loot the graves. This is an RPG after all.

Next floor!

"with white magic!"

: You can rest here!

This game is convincing me to join a cult.

We can dodge past that trainer for whatever reason and steal her spirit gold or whatever.

I-I thought we could dodge this one...

Yum. Lick (Shitadenameru: Tongue Lick) is the best Ghost move in the game. Ahahahahahaha. It's pathetically weak and does have a chance of Paralyzing. Ghost sucks this gen.

Ooh, a good move. Razor Leaf (Happa Kattā: Leaf Cutter) is a pretty good Grass move with an increased chance to crit.

Oh great. Parafusion, combination of Paralysis and Confusion, means you have a 1 in 4 chance to attack. It sucks.

Yeah, yeah, gimme that good X item.

...cool.

Annoying that Ikue is getting all the exp, but that's what happens when our team just has STAB and Normal moves...

Last trainer. Maybe this one will have something new?

No.

"evil spirit!"

...you're sure it wasn't hair, eh, old lady? ...I'm assuming you're old since you have white hair.

And we've reached the final staircase.

!

A different coloured GHOST, but we still can't do anything to it.

So there's just one thing left to do.

And this is disappointing. This is a Cubone and would be my next member, but it's a GHOST right now, so annoyingly, we have to come back for one. Oh well.

So that's us done for now, let's move onwards. While we could head south to Route 11, there's not much of a reason to.

"POKEMON?"

And of course plenty of trainers. We'll take them out, since we're here.

I just kicked them into unconsciousness, what's the big deal?

I, uh, I wouldn't know anything, uh, about that.

Don't say it too loud, or the censors will get ya!

It's good Wukong can punch things again.

I also cannot stop putting salty nuts in my mouth. Haaaaaaaaa.

#089: Muk

Maybe Fury Swipes over Scratch was a bad idea. But it's not gonna learn anymore moves that are that great. (Apologies for the mouse cursor, dunno how it sneaked in there)

Poison Gas (Doku Gasu), well, Poisons the opponent. It has terrible accuracy though, so don't really bother.

"...and...then..."

You box it! Well it's what I'm going to do...

#064: Kadabra

Into the grass, we can catch a new Pokemon, that I'll just find instead of hunting around for it.

So Kinesis (Supūn Mage: Spoon Bend) is a pretty bad move that just lowers the opponent's accuracy by a stage. What's interesting about the move is that in RGB, no Pokemon could learn this move, the only way you could see it is via Metronome. In Yellow, Kadabra starts with this move, as it probably should've been.

Not too bad to catch. Probably won't say the same about its evolution.

Uhhhhh...

"here like this!"

You could say that, yeah.

Wukong getting stronger and stronger by beating up small, cute animals.

He's.

Huh, topical, since I'm doing a LEGEND OF KAY HD LP right now. Available in all good SALP forums now (usually on the third or fourth page).

Razor Leaf looks sweet as hell.

"are cute too!"

They're.

Nice collection you have there /sarcasm.

#030: Nidorina

The same thing applies to humans, gurrrl.

I'm too cool for school.

"gates at SAFFRON."

Man, that sounds like a real pressing concern, I should get serious and sort this out.

Heh, you guys make a rectangle.

RIGHT, let's sort this guard out.

"though!"

: Oh wait there, the road's closed.

Uh, of course, sir. Thank you for your time.

"how's your chem?"

I'm 11. I don't know what that is.

I'm better at video games then school. :(

"great selection!"

I can't wait for all those delicious items. We're done with Route 8, at least, so let's take the tunnel to Route 7.

This tunnel is the same as the other one and has a couple hidden items too.

Just gotta make sure you count the steps right.

"near CELADON CITY."

Is that thing outside Vermillion following me?

Maybe the guard on this side is more understanding.

"though!"

: Oh wait there, the road's closed."

Goddammit.

Route 7 is a bit poo poo, same Pokemon as Route 8 and is basically a small square.

And so we've made it to Celadon City, which we'll explore next time.

I like that Rival fight. There's a theory that he's in the Tower to mourn his Rattata, which is the only Pokemon ever to disappear from a rival's team. I personally think they just removed the Rattata from his team as no longer a credible threat. After all, there wasn't yet a convention that the Rival never dropped a Pokemon. But it's interesting.

Side Notes 10: Is Raticate Dead???

No, you idiot.

So there's the theory going around that the reason your rival appears in Pokemon Tower and battles you is because he is mourning the death of his Raticate, who no longer appears in his team. So you are a complete rear end in a top hat for beating him when he is at his lowest point and continue on without a care in the world. How could you? Here, let me write this fanfic about what a misunderstood character Blue is and how he's a really nice guy if you just get to KNOW HIM. All he needs is a girl to set him straight, you'll see!

Well anyway, you can tell this theory is bullshit, but sure, let's humour it. Let's pretend that this was intended. Firstly WHYYYYYYY??? What possible reason would there be to include it in the game? Does Blue grow as a character because of it? Does he finally see the preciousness of life and that frivolous completion of an encyclopedia doesn't matter anymore? Until it all comes crashing down when you beat him and he swears revenge on what an insensitive prick you are. He will become the strongest trainer in the world and he will take you down, in memory of his Raticate. Is that what happens? A tale of revenge for the injustices he's been a part of?

No, you idiot. Blue does not grow as a character until the very end of the game, when after you beat him for the seventh time or whatever and gets chewed out by his grandad, does he finally realize that he's a bad trainer and if he just trusted his Pokemon, or some other bullshit, then he would've won. Obviously. He will act no differently to when we next see him, so there's no reason to have his Raticate die at this point of the story. There's no thematic point, so the implication is pointless because it doesn't do anything, or change any part of the story.

So why doesn't he keep his Raticate around? Well, he's been catching a lot of Pokemon. Definitely a lot more than 40, so he's seeing which Pokemon are stronger than others and it's in this battle that he's getting his team composition finalized, to cover all types and cement his position as the strongest trainer. So he realized that Raticate just wasn't making the cut anymore and replaces it with better, stronger things. The fact that he does it when we face him in Pokemon Tower is a coincidence.

And why is he in Pokemon Tower to begin with? Well, he tells us: catching a Cubone. There are three unique Pokemon in that area that are found nowhere else, so someone wanting to complete their Pokedex would go there. But wait, if he caught a Cubone, but it's not in his team when we fight him, DOES THAT MEAN CUBONE DIED???

No, you idiot. Does it mean the other 35 Pokemon he caught and aren't using in his team right at that moment mean that they died also???

No, you idiot, it means that he's storing them in a cybernetic space, you know, the one he talked about when we saw him in Cerulean? The one that we use throughout the game. Maybe, just maybe, other people aside from us use it also. But that's just a theory. A GAME THEORY. Thanks for reading!

Maybe he forgot his Raticate in Daycare like I forgot my Pidgeotto, so he'll come back one day to deposit a pokemon there and they'll go "Are you here to take back your raticate."

And that was the story of the birth of the God Raticate.

BY THE WAY! You can actually delete HMs in Gen 1 using the Daycare, since the game wont check what move they're deleting when a pokemon learns a move while in daycare, maneuvering the unwanted HM to the top of the list means that the next time that pokemon would learn a move by levelling, it will forget the HM move.

Honestly I kind of wish they'd just go back to the Gen 1 formula and stop doing serious storylines outside of "here's some bad guys, go stop them I guess" because having to click through like twenty minutes of dialogue about ghost nukes is silly and gets in the way of my giant psychic metal spider punching small fuzzy critters to death.

Funny thing: XY's story IS like Gen 1. The villains show up in a cave wanting fossils, the story is barebones at best until after the seventh gym where MASSIVE PLOTDUMP happens. XY was fun, but my god, did the E4 suck, the villains sucked (My second favorite villain theme, is second only to Neo Team Plasma). Yeah they dropped the ball with XY. Oh, and the massive postgame cut from BW2 to XY.

Skyridge

Not to mention that Team Plasma's entire plan falls apart if anyone had JUST ASKED THEIR POKEMON if they wanted to stay with their trainers instead of blindly buying in to the whole "Hey, you know all those arguably sentient animals that are like best friends with you? They actually hate you and you're ruining their lives. We're gonna go reinstate monarchy now" bullshit. The sheer amount idiocy on both sides of the equation completely shatters any suspension of disbelief it tries to establish. Not to mention that the game tries to spin "Pokemon and their trainers are bestest buddies!" as a shocking revelation, which is like trying to dramatically reveal that a banana is a fruit.

And that's just Black/White. Don't even get me started on Team Flare and Lysandre.

Like I said earlier, Team Rocket was the only team that really worked because while they were of arguable competence, they didn't have any absurd plans that depend entirely on a complete lack of autonomy and/or basic rational thought from all characters involved, including the Team itself.

If Pokemon wants to have a more serious story, it should focus on the mythology and influence of the legendary Pokemon, something which would actually make the world feel more fantastical.

It's not like I've got no worries...
But I'll be fine.
even though XY didn't have a huge postgame, the looker story after the E4 is legitimately the best thing, story-wise, to come out of the pokemon franchise

Actually, I respectfully disagree with you there. For as obviously flawed as this game is, there ARE a lot of really good things about it. The presentation and atmosphere, for example, are the most immediate things. No other Yu-Gi-Oh game goes out of the way to really make

Eh...I would argue that Team Galactic at least worked, since it was basically a cult that Cyrus was manipulating the whole time. In that sense, their idiocy and blind faith made sense from a story perspective.

Seriously, the whole deal with N is that he can talk to the damned things. I know the story justification is Ghetsis lying to him and only letting him hang out with pokemon who were mistreated but all N had to do in order to pick up on the lie was to treat the pokemon like sentient beings (WHICH IS HIS ENTIRE GIMMICK) and ask them if they want to leave their trainers instead of having a bunch of mooks steal them. I think after being told no a bunch of times he'd begin to think something was fishy.

Maybe the lesson is less "All pokemon are friends to their trainers" and more "A lack of communication is the root of most problems".

I...never did that. Was it long? Was it really that good? I've noticed Game Freak follows the mantra of "One step forward, two steps back" what with finally having a massive post game, I mean I capped out the play timer on black 2. That says something. Then introducing player customization for all of one game. Anyhow Pokémon Tower.( Fun fact, Chrome autocorrect Pokémon to the right spelling) I never understood our rivals motivation for even entering lavender town bar healing. Come to think of it, why can everyone but us stay around with their teams wiped out?
