If the game ever gets released, how hackable will Star Citizen be? I read in a Wiki that Lesnick claims CIG will deal with "loopholes" as quickly as possible. How credible is Lesnick on this subject?

Who will ultimately run this game: CIG and the backers? Or the griefers and hackers?

In a broad answer, any game that offloads critical functions to the client, without doing a checksum with the server, is extremely easy to hack.

Star Citizen, if it ever releases, will go about a week before an aimbot is released.

The official answer is that it will be as hackable as you want. It will also be completely unhackable. You can run modded servers for you and your friends. You can hop in and out of the persistent universe. Everything will be great, somehow!

What's wrong with that? Well, it affected ship stats whether or not you were using the mod. You could set your ship to be nigh invulnerable and join a public match as everything was verified client side.

On one hand, it's pre-pre-alpha and poo poo happens but on the other, really?

It also enabled scrubs like me to get the old version of the Constellation flyable in space (the one CIG won't actually let anyone fly yet in the public builds): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoDjfPeczUU

But the main reason any of this was possible was because the leak included the tool they use to sign the PAK files - the game won't recognize them unless this tool is used (and there's no way around this I've found yet). For the next major build after the leak, CIG changed all the RSA keys used by the game so it wouldn't recognize modified PAK files even if the Paksign tool was used (as the one from the leak was built with the old keys and there's been no leak of the new version).

As a downside it broke the game a ton of people for with old files because suddenly the game was throwing "unsigned pak" errors due to the auto-patcher not cleaning the old poo poo up when they changed their archive layout around, but the recent builds are effectively unmoddable again. The rebalance mod can't work with current versions.

Anyways yeah - this was just a byproduct of the leak allowing people to freely modify the game files of the current builds at the time. CIG almost immediately addressed that by changing the keys as the signing tool typically isn't something that gets out to the public at all.

Of course anything can still ultimately be cracked given enough dedication, and I agree still they need some kind of server-side verification (for the Persistent Universe at least - we should still be able to mod the poo poo out of any offline modes of the game) to keep things sane.

Honestly, I've rarely been happier to be proven idiotic. I was under the impression that the rebalance mod was a simple xml file modification. I'm actually really stoked that it was a temporary issue that has been mostly resolved, even if sever-side verification hasn't been implemented yet.

The game is no longer pre-pre alpha. According to CIG its in alpha. It should be at least in beta. I suspect that building a beta version will be a considerable challenge against time and monetary resources.

Thats not to say they havent made some degree of progress, but i can see what CRs end game is leading to and its way more expensive that $86 million. Keeping up funding to complete the game without a playable beta release is going to be incredibly difficult.

Funding is fine till December even if they don't ship anything. Assuming they manage to get at least the social module out in December they are in no danger of dropping below the 1 million a month, Derek Smart gets interviewed, danger zone until well into next year.

They had to sell LTI Retaliators to do it is all.

That's a lot of guff to simply say “we somehow think that every animation must exist in first-person and just can't be arsed”. Also, the notion that modern games don't have a lot of animations that has to exist in both third and first person is just baffling. I'm kind of wondering what he's using as his pool of reference.

So it's basically Freelancer all over again? And pre-pre-alpha or not, there really is no excuse to have that stuff client-side in a multiplayer match. It's almost the first thing you should do properly once the netcode stops trying to process all incoming commands backwards — as in when you're at the “we've just managed to have two primitive cube shapes exist in the same arena” stage of the development. Jeez…

X weeks until they sell space penthouses.

Organizations can either be gifted ships, or permitted to borrow them under a variable number of constraints.

At CitizenCon more info will be provided about organizational spaces, similar to the penthouse that $10K ultra spergs got. Basically organizational hangars, storage spaces, etc.

As part of the bounty system there will also be a treaty system, which will include relationship mechanics. Things like cutting out certain orgs, etc.

They're trying to avoid EVE-style timezone "warfare" and they're working on hoping to solve it through solutions like NPC defenders.

Long term (not at launch) the intent is to "definitely" allow organizations to claim territory and declare their ownership.

In a future org drop more ranks and other stuff will be available.

Reputation stuff is in debate. Strongest argument is to avoid punishing entire org through the actions of one player. Organizational leaders might get reports indicating how many criminals or bad people they have. The goal is to allow orgs to self-police.

When it comes to reputation, the captain/ship decides the response.

Exploration. Biggest challenge is finding a jump point (Endeavor science ship reveal will discuss scanning). Traversing will be difficult but skill based; not impossible to do on the first try.

Actively developed software with a decent information security team is generally anti-fragile. The more Star Citizen is attacked by hackers over the course of the next 19 years of development, the harder it will be to hack when it releases in 2034.

In all seriousness, if CIG doesn't require clients to run listening software when connected to the PU, they're fully loving retarded.
