I bought a sprint iphone6 less than 6 months ago on contract. I've got a new job that will pay my cell phone bill every month and I'd like to swap to AT&T as I have Uverse TV and internet. Is AT&T buying out contracts? There's no way I'm paying the sprint ETF, so if AT&T isn't buying out contracts, I guess I'm staying with sprint.

Currently paying around $146 for a two line family plan.

Line 1 with 550 minutes / Unlimited Text / Unlimited Data (Grandfathered) is as follows:

1. FamilyTalk Nation 550 with Rollover 50.00
2. International Roaming - Expanded 0.00
3. Family Messaging Unlimited 30.00
4. Unlim data for 4G LTE Smartphones w/Visual 30.00
Voice Mail
5. National Account Discount 16.00CR
Total Monthly Charges $94.00

Line 2 with 550 minutes / Unlimited Text / 300MB Data is as follows:

1. FamilyTalk Nation 550 with Rollover 9.99
2. International Roaming - Standard 0.00
3. DataPlus 300MB for iPhone with Visual 20.00
Voicemail
4. Family Messaging Unlimited 0.00
Total Monthly Charges $29.99

After all the fees, totals for around $146.65.

Line 1 is my line and Line 2 is what my mom uses. Is there a way that I can remove Line 2 from my account and still retain my unlimited data? Or is there a way that I can remove Line 2 and lower the monthly price of Line 1? Unlimited data is nice but $111 a month for Unlimited Data is a little too much.

Sprint iPhones won't work on ATT anyway, so you could always sell the iPhone to pay off the ETF, then switch. ATT is currently offering $100 if you switch and buy a new phone on Next. Closest you will find right now.

So to confirm: your mom is dropping off your plan?

You could change line 2 to a feature phone and it drops to just $10 a month. If line 2 goes away entirely it drops that $10 as well. Even though you have a family plan, the system will let you keep the 550 min plan with one line, but you are correct that you cannot switch it to an individual plan.

If you don't use a lot of data a 3GB individual plan is $65 and 6GB is $90. Note that neither includes the price of a phone, which you have to buy outright over an installment plan whenever you next get a phone.

Worth mentioning the rumors are pretty strong that ATT is going to axe two year contracts sooner rather than later. And if they did it soon, it would probably be before the next iPhone launch. Take with a grain of salt.

No, my mom is not dropping me off her plan - I just wanted to see if there was a way that I could take Line 2 off and make my plan cheaper by changing to an individual line.

I also never sign contracts with any carrier and have always paid for unlocked phones in full.

white and gold.

I just want to say Passport plans are dumb. I planned to add a $30 plan on my wife's line and in Iceland she was going to tether mostly through my Nexus 5 with a local SIM, but I destroyed my Nexus the week before leaving and I fell back to my "unlocked" One X. I added the passport plan to her line and bought a NOVA.is SIM card for my phone only to find out it was NOT unlocked.
So, when we checked in I called ATT to upgrade her to the $60 Passport plan, but you can't upgrade. Once you add a plan, that's it. You can replace it and pay more, but the unused data goes poof.

Since getting back, we bought a Moto X Pure Edition to replace her phone and I replaced the broken parts on mine, so we're both fully unlocked. Once November rolls around I get to try to turn in her old Moto X and terminate our involvement with Next.

We ended up paying only $136 in international data, which was my $60 300MB plan, and her $30 120 MB plan, plus $45 in overage data, and $1 in voice calls. It would have only been $121 if I had gone straight to the $60 plan for her. Not being able to upgrade it is dumb.

I just got back from a week in China and Hong Kong and I was able to stay under 120megs no problem while there just by turning off back ground data and sticking to WiFi whenever possible. Had to gently caress with it a bit to ensure that data got turned off whenever I got onto a reliable WiFi connection, but otherwise was reasonably surprised by how it actually worked.

Of course, I couldn't browse Reddit the whole time or anything with that little bandwidth, but a train schedule or an e-mail was no major item. The unlimited texting/MMS was the real kicker for me. Over 1k SMS sent while running around. I just used Google voice to data-dial from the hotel WiFi whenever I wanted to talk to someone.

That being said, loving bullshit that you can't just upgrade from the 30 to the 60 or whatever and get the extra data. Will they refund the 30 and put on the 60? Or would you end up paying for both a 30 and a 60?

EDIT: Oh, and not once after MANY tries did I ever the the POS passport app to authenticate me with a WiFi access point in public. Never.

This actually isn't true anymore. As of February, Sprint will unlock any device for domestic use if it's out of contract, including taking an ETF. The Sprint iPhone 6 supports all AT&T (and T-Mobile I'm pretty sure) GSM and LTE bands. It's actually the iPhone to buy in the US if you can manage to get one at full price.

Alright, ATT Next vs 2 year plan question.

Current plan: Mobile share value plan, 4 gigs data with rollover.
Max monthly data usage: < 3 gigs (yay wifi)
2 smartphones, me: one year left on contract. Wife: out of contract, looking at an upgrade.
Discounts: 24% discount through work

So my wife is ready to upgrade as her Samsung Rugby is dying and chewing through batteries. I've got about 10 months left on contract. I've read that ATT is going to phase out 2 year contracts, but the whole Next thing doesn't seem like much of a savings, if at all. You're basically paying to lease a phone for 12/18/24 months, and then trade it in after X amount of time, right? Is there any benefit to going with a Next plan right now? We don't burn through phones; I upgrade every couple of years, and she uses phones until they are long past retirement. I was even considering downgrading to the 3 gig data plan because we use maybe half of 4 gigs every month.

Anyway, I feel like I'm missing something about the pricing or terms of the Next program and I'm going to get gypped. Can someone explain it in a not-labyrinthine way?

Someone else will explain it better but if you typically use your phone for more than 2 years then you want to do Next. After you pay off your phone, your bill will go down.

First off: your plan of $70 for 4GB can now either be downgraded to the 3Gb as you mentioned, or you can get 6GB for the same $70.

There isn't a bad option:
Next:
$25 monthly * 24 months + $650 = $1200

Two year:
$40 monthly * 24 months + $200 + $40 upgrade fee = $1150.

The plan goes back to $25 on either option, so you aren't locked out either way in the future. Next does give you options to upgrade early or buy out your installments early, so basically you pay $50 more for flexibility.

Next is not a lease, it is an installment plan on the cost of the phone. You own the phone the whole time.

Note for everyone: ATT will start charging a $15 upgrade fee when you upgrade on Next starting August 1st. They will also start charging activation fees if you start a new line and bring your own device. I agree it's retarded.

Truly the most FU of fees.

If the FCC decision for unlimited users sticks, I'll use that to cancel and try either Project Fi or T-Mobile. Otherwise I just may switch to T-Mobile anyway when the Note 5 is released and use their promo to pay off my 3/4 month ETF.

Well, if you are bringing your own phone it'll be an activation fee to start up, but SIM swaps in the future should be free. Just an upgrade fee to start up on next.

Of course if you trade up your phone on next to get a new phone there is no fee, but given the resale value is normally way better online I doubt many people here will go with that.

If they are on an old minutes plan they are still around. If they are on the new shared data plans (pretty likely) then basically no. The new plans she is getting a discount for bring her own phone. If she signs a two year, said discount goes away.

Basically, carriers switched to where you buy phones outright. Sucks, but the plans are cheaper as a result, so it does mostly balance out.

Unfortunately, iPhones are expensive, so now that shows through more. The cheapest iPhone is the 5C at $450, you can buy a phone outright through swappa or something, or you could buy a Moto G for $150ish outright. Those are probably examples of the best options.

This may be the wrong place to ask, but I am in a bit of a unique situation.

My girlfriend pays for an AT&T plan with a huge discount from her company (but it's not a company phone, it's just a discount program through the company to make personal plans cheaper.) It's cheap enough with the discount that we don't feel the need to switch to Straigh Talk or whatever.

It was time for her upgrade so I suggested that she get an iPhone 6, sell it on eBay, and then buy a Moto G 3rd Gen (a phone she actually wants.) She hated her iPhone 5 and loved my Nexus 6.

So right now I have a sealed iPhone 6. Is there any problem eBaying this? The bills will be paid for the next two years. Do I need to open it to remove any settings? Her sim card is currently in her iPhone 5, we can just use that right? I would assume yes, but I bet the IMEI or whatever is connected to the account.

I'd prefer not to break the seal.

Edit:

I don't want to transfer the contract, just sell the phone and keep paying for the AT&T plan which will in turn pay off the contract for the iPhone while at the same time paying for the service she uses for the Moto G.

I was hoping it would be as easy as her taking her sim card out of her iPhone 5, putting it into a Moto G, applying the APN settings, selling the iPhone 6, the buyer puts his SIM card in, applies his APN settings...

Why wouldn't it work this way? We aren't going to screw the buyer over and stop paying for the contract, but I could see a buyer being concerned about this.

I am also concerned that AT&T would see a foreign SIM card from Straight Talk (or something) and then brick the phone because it's not the SIM card that it's contracted to... but I see a lot of AT&T iPhones on eBay... but maybe they were paid in full and not locked to an account? I don't know.

Ok, the big question is what plan are you two on?

If you are on an old mins plan / unlimited data, then what you described above was the old way to get around "double paying for a phone."

If you are on a share data plan, then you don't want to buy an iPhone and sell it to get a Moto G. You just want to buy a Moto G. See my post above.

The iPhone is locked to ATT, so it won't work with a straight talk SIM or any non ATT SIM. ATT will unlock it, but only after the contract is up. ATT won't brick it, the phone just won't work.

And if the response is "that's not fair," the answer is "sorry, but that's how it works." ATT hasn't been paid the full amount of the phone until that contract is paid through.

I would take a step back and post your exact plan. Even with unlimited data, unless you use a bunch of data the plans might be cheaper anyway. And if that ends up being the case, the solution is to return the iPhone.

If you have an older smartphone, ATT should still be offering $200 to trade in said phone with phone purchase, so you could trade in old smartphone for $200, sell iPhone on eBay to pay off your contract with sprint, get new iPhone, keep whatever credits they offer. I would call or stop by a store.

Edit: whoops: answered an old post.

How can I tell? The phones each have their own data plans, so in that sense it's not shared... but maybe that's not what you mean. We did pay 199.99 for it and have been due for an upgrade for a year.

We are not doing that new Next Financing thing or whatever that is.

We've literally had this plan since AT&T was Cingular, so I don't know what the gently caress has happened over the years.

Right, rejecting a new plan without knowing whatever the gently caress it is is a great way to ensure you are not overpaying.

Anyway, no offense, but look at your bill. I can tell you are on an old plan, if you post your line item for the bill (even just the monthly rate), I'll be able to breakdown exactly what you have and show you both options. I know old and new plans extremely well.

Sorry to be an rear end about it, but you're putting yourself into a hole by doing stupid poo poo without researching first, so your first step now needs to be take a step back, compare options, then make a drat decision. And I'll help, but it requires you to actually listen.

Hahaha, yeah, we really dove right into this one. I do feel stupid, but it's not going to ruin anybody's day if we have to use/return an iPhone 6. My though process was since she was already subsidizing a phone purchase through her monthly bill she might as well get a high resell value model (which are usually iPhones) and then get some of her money back through eBay.

I appreciate your help, you seem to really know your AT&T poo poo. Like I said earlier, this is my girlfriend's account, so I don't have access to the bill right now (which makes me feel EVEN dumber than I already do), but I will get that information to you ASAP.

poo poo, I don't even mind putting it away for a year until the contract's paid off and we can unlock it or whatever.

Ditto here, does anyone know if the existing 15gig converts to the "new" 15gig with International features? It READS like they're opening up SMS, including many international locations, to just be free on the higher data plans.

Anyone? Do I need to upgrade to 20 then downgrade back to 15 to get the new features, or am I going to get the free international texting going forward without any changes?

Any mobile share value plan, both older and the new ones just released, include include unlimited international text messaging. It just has be be mobile share "value," not mobile share only (which those plans are old and not recommended anyway).
