The Venture Bros cast got way too bloated for its own good because they decided every one-note joke of a side character needed to be tied into this grand thematic jerk-off adventure when all anybody really cared about was the characters that were on the show from the get-go.

A lot of Adult Swim shows have done this dance before, including Morel Orel and Metalocalypse. Then take that joke to the most extreme it can possibly go. Then take it a bit further. Then veer off into other genre territory mostly for the hell of it. Then get experimental with form.
