Has it been confirmed that those are the correct size bushings and bolts that will fit a BG?

Gotta take baby steps though, once I get this thing buttoned up I have to get to work on my Miata, I've been neglecting it for far too long. Good deal, did this on my last old car when prepping it for sale. I have maxed out comprehensive on two 15+ year old vehicles with a $50 deductible because: I have no car payments, and $90 a month is good piece of mind.

Having surging idle issues again, down low to under 100 rpm almost stalling, then back up to around 800 rpm at normal idle, over and over until I get moving. It starts to happen after the motor warms up. After the tune up it seemed to disappear but has returned, I doubt it's the IAC because the rpm's usually go up in that scenario.

Does it kinda have a hissing sound from the motor. Like a vacuum leak. Maybe all the new stuff you put on caused some old rubber to blow out. Or it could just he old rubber doing what old rubber does and cracking

It was doing it a lot worse before I did the tune up, it would flat out die. Now it's just loping down and up. I haven't noticed any hissing, but I'll have to pay more attention next time. I've read on CP that it's probably a good idea to replace the vacuum lines, so I think I'm gonna do that soon and see what happens. It the only remaining thing I can think of besides maybe a bad ground, but I cleaned those up already.

leica posted:But honestly, comprehensive is so cheap, I always add it on to my cars by default. Probably is overkill for this car though. I keep comprehensive and uninsured/underinsured motorist on every car I've owned since a shitbox got stolen. In TX, UM/UIM also covers hit and runs, whether driving or parked, and it's not much more expensive than comprehensive. It's paid for itself several times over from having two cars get hit while parked. As for your surging idle, I know Hondas do exactly the same thing when they have a decent vacuum leak. Wouldn't surprise me if Mazda ECUs did the same. My old BG would surge and die at idle when the intake boot cracked down in those little folds. The constant heat from being understood kinda bakes them.

Subarus also get little post-MAF leaks from little tears between the ribs of the intake piping. Seriously sucks to track down since they're hard to see, especially the underside which is closest to the engine heat soak. The last one I found was only after I pulled the hose for an unrelated fix and decided to clean the inside of the hose on a lark.

some texas redneck posted:(a cracked PCV valve or loose oil filler cap/dipstick can also cause weird idle issues) Hmm, I just noticed recently that there is a bit of a leak from the filler cap, maybe it's time for a new one. I'm thinking the engine is going to run a lot different (better) once I get the new exhaust on it, so once that's done I'll start trying to track down the source of the problem (throw more parts at it )

Surging like that I would consider vacuum lines first, but also things like plug wires...I am assuming you have put new ones on there but I'd check...

Yep new NGK wires and plugs, cap and rotor. Considering a new coil as well since they're pretty cheap. Got the exhaust today

Yeah the exhaust will definitely help the idle a good chunk. It will also be easier to diagnosis a vacuum leak with a quiet exhaust.

Random thought on the idle hunt/surge: make sure the spark plug boot ends are looking good on the new plugs. On my 97 Accord I had a little bit on an idle surge left after an ignition tuneup to address the issue, and one of my spark plug boots was a bit off on the #4 cylinder (tip was a bit sideways in the boot). Did well after that. I still get a random small stumble, but nothing too bad at all.

Aaaaand it died on me today trying to take it to work. I noticed that it was struggling a bit to crank yesterday, and today got a couple of weak turnovers then nothing. Didn't have time to check the battery, but it has a 12/12 date on it so it's only about three years old. I just hope there's not a draw on it or something, can't imagine a car with no options other than a/c draining the battery.

Had a similar issue with my parents Corolla. If left idle for 2 days, battery went flat. We resolved the issue by a chance when we replaced the starter which decided to munch on itself.

Took it to Advance auto and they tested it on the car. No drain on it and it was barely alive, they suggested maybe the alternator but it was recently replaced and the car wouldn't start to test it so I just said gently caress it and got a new battery rather than wait around for them to charge it and have it die again to tell me yeah it's the battery. Made an appointment to get the windshield replaced tomorrow, and it's still too loving hot for me to put it on jackstands and start loving with the exhaust, besides I got the exhaust but no gaskets yet and I ordered them at the same time wtf. I'm really hoping I'm not going to have to dump much more money and time into this thing, I just need to drive it so I can get to work on the Miata. Gonna have to make a trip to the JY and try to find a new hood and hinges as well as other bits.

I just want to whine and moan a bit over the fact that my winter beater shitbox 323F just turned up a busted brake line (left rear, at the axle fairly close to the brake hose). On all the old BG's I've ever done brake stuff on, I have never been able to get the brake line fittings out of that "distribution block" that sits on top of the rear axle (because 20+ years worth of Swedish winter gunk and subsequent corrosion), and often not at the hose end either. So I'll probably have to cut the brake line and fiddle with putting fittings on the steel line and it's going to leak and I'll be cold and miserable when doing it and get a facial of brake fluid and oh god I hate steel brake lines and who the gently caress really needs brakes anyway.

Awesome car! Great thread! I almost bought an old Protege before you guys talked me into a Miata. So I got curious and of course I find several decent cars within driving distance but I have to buy a loving house so no more cars for me.

Thanks dude bro. Just checked the tracking on my package from Tommychu, it's in Orlando now, hopefully I'll get it in the morning, or at least by Monday! Then the car is going on jackstands and I'll really be ripping it apart this time, while I'm doing the auto to manual belt swap I'm going to take out the carpet and give it a good power washin'. Then I'm also gonna tackle the exhaust, shifter bushings, brakes and anything else that comes up which probably will

Neat thread to follow! I really like the BG platform cars. The first car I owned was a beat-up 1994 MX-3 (ok, technically not BG but damned close) that I wish I'd known more about wrenching while owning. Learned to drive on an Escort wagon, still one of the best cars ever made IMO. Currently DD a nice strippo ZX2. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Windshield replaced. Painted the muffler, cowl, and wiper arms. Fabricated a battery bracket Then i changed the oil and found this in the drain pan. Should I be worried?

I'm impressed you even bothered to check. What is it? It doesn't look metallic. Maybe time for a Blackstone job? What paint did you use on the muffler? That poo poo is shiny.

You can see the little shards in the pan too, I think it's aluminum because it's really soft.....Maybe from the threads in the oil pan? Main bearings aren't that soft are they? I did run a little bit of seafoam in the crankcase for 50 miles, I don't think that would have hurt anything though. The paint is some sort of rustoleum for car trim poo poo, it is kinda shinny, I may just go over it with a coat of flat. Applebees Appetizer fucked around with this message at 00:35 on Nov 8, 2015 |

Automotive bearings are very soft on the inside layer, but they usually are flexible, not rigid. There's a steel shell, then bronze, and then babbit.

Hard to tell but my first guess would be oil filter material.

Hot drat I think you're right because I had to break out the filter wrench to get it off and it was a bitch, it's probably shavings from me scraping the gently caress out of the filter to get it off falling into the pan. Phew!

Got the belts! Thanks tommychu! Does anyone know how to "unlock" seatbelts? They don't want to come out from the reel
|
# ? Nov 10, 2015 00:29 |
|
On old VW seatbelts you soak them in a bucket with dawn soap for an hour or two, give them a shake around, and they unlock. Had to do that to three used sets of seatbelts I got from ebay.
|
# ? Nov 10, 2015 01:00 |
|
You have to hold them more-or-less exactly vertical, the way they'd sit in the car. That hosed me up too.
|
# ? Nov 10, 2015 02:56 |
|
And yeah, of course, that. Mine is for if they still won't come unstuck and are jammed.
|
# ? Nov 10, 2015 03:01 |
|
Well thanks for that tip anyway, the right rear passenger belt is jammed so i'll try the soap soak method for that one.

# ? Nov 10, 2015 05:11 |

Wouldn't that rust the hell out of the seatbelt mechanism and/or strip all the grease out of it?
|
# ? Nov 10, 2015 14:27 |

Its probably the ball bearing needs to be shaken out of its lock position. I always think that seatbelts are broken when they are out of the car, you just need to get the right combo of tilted and shaken.

Up and ready for the exhaust/shifter bushings and a gearbox fluid change. I tried using the back yard on the grass but it was way to unstable, so in the carport it is. A bit cramped in here but it's good enough and I don't have to worry about the car falling on my head Been driving around with this poo poo for two weeks, good loving riddance. Studs coming off the cat aren't looking so hot, I'm assuming these will work with a little finesse putting the nut back on Hey at least the cat looks good, I was expecting it to be all black and clogged up!
