Terra, Outer Cloud

“It has a beauty to it, does it not?” The Chaos Space Marine’s voice was contemplative.
“I suppose. I think the expression on Abaddon’s face will make it worth it.” Anna’s tone was brisk.
Blackheart turned, looked at her. “The thousand moons of Sol, glittering against the black? Artificial habitats, ancient comets, dozens of Hive-worlds?”
“Could take it or leave it.”
“Bah.” He waved his claw. “There is no romance in you. This is a story that will be told through the ages, when Huron Blackheart struck at Terra, succeeding where even Horus failed.”
“Sure. As tactical application, as strategic victory - that is beauty. But light reflected off of ice and glass? There are trillions of places just like it.”
They both ducked their eyes as vivid white light arced from one of the satellites, incinerating half a dozen Cruisers. The after-image was visible even through their arms.
“How about that then? Sol’s defense grid. Only place in the galaxy with it.”
“That I’ll give you.” She showed her teeth. “Destruction has a beauty to it. Pity it’s so … erratic.”
“Anna, if it weren’t erratic this invasion force would be gone already.”
“Certainly. But if you want to talk about beauty, you want something in the prime of its life, the height of its power. This defense grid is an old man, dozing towards uselessness. Much like the Corpse-Emperor.”
He shrugged his great shoulders. “I think there can be beauty in it nonetheless.”
She didn’t reply, even as they watched their great fleet pass under the hazy eyes of the ancient machines. Randomly, without reason, ships were destroyed - great white flares arcing across the solar system. But nowhere near enough to stop the invasion, or even slow it down. It was as Anna had said - the stumbling mutterings of forgotten programs, and enough power to atomize planets.

Common misconception. Orks aren't immune to warp corrupion, but any Ork that gets corrupted is crumped by their mates before they can spread the corruption, for acting un-Orky. They're genetically predisposed to be good at policing for "natural behavior" and that makes it impossible for them to be successfully infiltrated, be it by Chaos or Genestealers.

That would be several orders of magnitude too subtle for Gork & Mork. The greenskin gods tend to make their intentions known by literally crushing things they don't like with giant ethereal green fists and feet spawned from warp stuff. Indeed, the power to call the gods from the warp to krump something is among the myriad feats weirdboyz are known for.

Terra

It was one black tower among money, a hunkering monolith of basalt and obsidian. It made no effort at being a thing of beauty, luxurious ostentation. It knew what it was. Here and there you could see old pockmarks, bullet holes and plasma sears, unrepaired these long centuries. It seemed to come out of the toxic fog like a claw out of the grave.

It was ominiously quiet, particularly for such a place as Terra. People had to be going out of their way to avoid even seeing it, and the buildings nearby were slumped over and abandoned. Your handful of people were the only ones walking the powdery roads. Each footstep kicked up dust, highlighting your approach, even as it concealed your exact form.

The central door was lightly etched in ceramite. A pictogram, showing the High Lords creating the Ordo Hereticus - and that same Order watching the High Lords for any signs of treason or heresy. Vandire would never be allowed to happen again. The common rebuttal was the question - who watches the watchers? Inquisitor Lord Karamazov would answer ‘I will.’ He was the kind of person who would execute himself if he suspected himself of heresy.

The doors opened at your approach.

ANGRON I

Khorne.... watched. To ascribe any action or emotion even slightly human is to make a classic error; the Blood God, like his three kin, are further removed from humanity than humanity from a virus. Khorne Is. There is no denying this. And yet.... For ten thousand years, Khorne has lived in the endless struggles of human and Xenos alike. And now, a fight greater than any in millennia, and certainly greater than any in living memory, was turning and shaking the warp itself. Golgotha burned. Stellar masses of living creatures fought and died and strived. So Khorne.... watched. If it had a face, the God on the Skull Throne might have smiled.

Angron remembered his insanity, before the Blood God had taken him, before his transformation. It was a bitter reminder of all that humanity could do, even to those that would bring salvation to them. The memory of the Nails was an ever-fleeting sting in his mind. It didn't bother him anymore. Nothing bothered him anymore. All that was left of Angron of De'Shea was his mighty hate. The fight was all. Win or lose, the victor and the conquered, all shed blood for the Blood God. Angron felt himself being drawn towards Golgotha. Was someone attempting to summon him? Was he being sent by Khorne himself? It did not matter. Only one thing mattered now. Angron roared with a blood drenched smile on his wretched face.

Slice of Life: Sebekh the Execrator.

++Ensure all data streams are recorded.++

++Affirmative. Data recording initiated at 21:05 local chron. Control links coming online now.++

The two robed figures could not have been more different in size and silhouette as the strobed yellowish light of constant proximate gunfire and explosions illuminated them. The smaller one was human-shaped and roughly two metres tall with clusters of mechadendrites for arms and a servo-stabilised plasma gun on a larger mount jutting from his back. He stood atop a hovering platform with several consoles and scanning devices. It, for its gender was indeterminate behind the mirrored upper faceplate and the voluminous robe covering its body, looked up at the larger figure, the squidlike cluster of smaller mechadendrites comprising its lower face clicking and shifting as it spoke.

The larger figure appeared to have taken the drive chassis and torso of a Defiler and iterated upon it with a number of nightmarish Warptek and Xenotek armaments. The left side sported a strange black metal framework encasing a pulsing green polyhedral object attached to a C-shaped traversal mount, and the right side was dominated by what could best be likened to an electrified metal octopus, a seething morass of biomechanical, tentacular dendrites that crackled with the visible energy of a power field. There were several other even less identifiable armaments jutting from the torso of the Arch-Heretek's combat host, and the head possessed four equally horrifying faces, each one a lovingly mastercrafted effigy of one of the Gods of Chaos.

++Company, maintain cohesion and let the Obliterators handle the larger biologicals. If you fail to reach the designated point I will personally flay each of you synapse by synapse before letting these reeking aliens devour your remains.++

++Forgive us, o terrible one, we are advancing as quickly as we can but the ground is unstable. We shall not fail you.++ came the synthesised, monotone reply from the company commander.

++No, you shan't.++

In the valley below them, a charnel pit of unimaginable proportions, a pair of Obliterators and a company of Redemption Servitors from the Dark Mechanicus' slave legions escorted a tracked transport vehicle with a towering twenty-metre long black spike of glistening biometal attached to a gantry crane. All around them, a dozen different strains of Tyranid spat, hurled, slashed and clawed at them with a hundred different types of bioengineered weaponry.

They waded through a knee-high field of corpses of all shapes and sizes, the transport mulching everything beneath it into a steaming technicolour soup that only made movement harder. Crackling blasts of plasma energy and stacatto bursts of crimson beams erupted from the towering Obliterators as they gouged through the myriad forms and limitless numbers of Tyranid horrors. Eventually they reached the rough centre of the valley and the gantry crane began lifting the spike to a vertical angle.

++Coordinates reached, master. Fortifying position and deploying crew-served weapons.++

++Good. Hold position or your skulls will never make it to the Throne of the Blood God and your souls will be forfeit to this outsider filth.++

The gantry was now vertical, and drove the enormous spike into the ground by fully half its length and immediately a visible rippled shockwave distorted the very fabric of reality. The valley was filled with the sound of ten thousand screams tearing from alien larynges and the relentless assault paused for a fraction of a second as though the entire force was stunned. Immediately the attack returned, redoubled in effort as the smaller breeds frenzied and went berserk. Had the towering Heretek's host body possessed a mouth, it would have been an anticipatory grin.

++Theta Six Two. Begin fire mission.++

++Theta Six Two confirmed. Bombarding grid sectors immediately surrounding target coordinates. Inbound++ came the response from a bunker buried in the side of a mountain some thirty kilometres from the test site, deployed weeks prior by literally piledriving it into the mountain from orbit.

++Initiating field stabilisers and spatial emitters." The smaller Heretek informed Sebekh. Another pulse from the spire. Another frenzied assault by the Tyranids. A swarm of them managed to completely engulf one of the Obliterators, several small explosions emanated from the dogpile followed by a number of large chainsword blades. Those servitors nearest directed their fire at the pile of xenos swarming over the Obliterator.

Seconds later, the corpse-strewn field seemed to explode all at once. Great fountains of gore and viscera were hurled hundreds of metres into the sky and vast clouds of atomised blood and ichor misted the entire valley. More explosions followed, several of which were airbursts that rained down Warp-tainted prometheum over thousands of swarming xenos.

++Baseline spatial integrity at 96%, Psy-Engine readings baselining at 15% efficacy.++ The smaller Heretek reported.

++Stimulate Psynaptic mass and dial the Malific Amplifiers in slowly.++ Sebekh instructed.

++Affirmative. Psynaptic mass showing increased activity. 10% Amplifier increments creating secondary synaptic disruptions. Adjusting.++ A few moments later the smaller Heretek continued.

++5% increments providing optimal increase in Immaterium readings.++

The Arch-Heretek's optics zoomed in on the carnage below.

++Note that smaller xeno breeds trending towards indiscriminate targeting including other xeno breeds at 65%. Radius appears to be 500 metres. Larger breeds exhibiting minimal effect. Deliver secondary package.++

++Deploying now, Master.++ came the response from the Redemption Servitors below, followed a few moments later by the largest among them breaking into a dead sprint away from the rest of the company, which began concentrating their fire to provide the runner with the greatest chance of getting to a safe distance from the others.

++Detonating Rift Device.++ The Arch-Heretek sent an encrypted activation burst to a suitcase-sized device attached to the runners back as it managed to get more than 100 metres from the others. The device was essentially a scaled-up Warp grenade, and as it went off, the resultant explosion released a massive shockwave similar to the one from the larger object. It then rushed back inwards upon itself and the very fabric of reality tore with an awful roar. The whirling vortex of "glowing" blackness seemed to emanate smoky tendrils and crackling bolts of Warp energy, and from it poured a seemingly endless stream of Warp entities. Bloodletters, Daemonettes, Warp Spawn and even stranger Daemons erupted in every direction from the hole in realspace as it began to drift lazily around the battlefield.

++Empyrean Vitiation Engine field test complete. Withdraw to the following coordinates.++ Sebekh transmitted the location to the remaining troops below as he turned upon massive mechanical legs to depart, followed closely by the other Heretek. He doubted the servitors would survive, especially when the Obliterators flashed and disappeared as they teleported off the field of battle. The spire of glistening biometal would remain, and from that rift would continue to pour a legion of Daemons so long as the EVE continued to operate, locally negating the Warp Shadow the Tyranid Hivemind projected.
