last third of the movie was bad

not really but the whole starkiller x-wing / tie battle and eventual poe pew pew killing it was really really lame compared to ROTJ space battle / lando's death star run and the ANH trench run. the stuff happening on the surface was good i thought. and i wish they wouldve cut the whole final part where rey confronts luke.

I don't know how but they managed to make this movie feel smaller than ANH. People seeing the planets explode from the surface of other planets, the rebel fleet consisting of like 6 fighters and nothing bigger than the Falcon, it's lame.

the starkiller was pretty big but yeah... hopefully they're saving the big space battles with lots of ships and capital ships and poo poo for next couple eps...

They could have at least shown Kylo boarding a destroyer or something. Apparently his little shuttle and the Tie escorts just hyperspace by themselves everywhere. Seems dangerous.

So I just saw it again, still as awesome as the last time I saw it. I actually like Finn even more now, his expressions and comedic timing are pretty great.

And Rey is still a Mary Sue, just as I remember it.

It makes sense that Rey can immediately pilot better than anyone should be able to. The PT pretty much made it clear that the force makes it super easy to do normal people things. I agree with the complaint that she can immediately do Jedi things really well though, because Jedi things should be hard for Jedi to master. That's Disneyfication for ya. Still a thousand times better than the prequels.

If we're using this as a metric, The Phantom Menace is the 21st best movie ever.

can one of you nerds explain something to me?

so the empire dissolves into a presumably democratic republic and a fascist pseudo-empire, that makes sense but why does the rebel alliance stick around? whats their deal, like do they control territory? are they opposed to the new republic for some reason? hell are the republic and the first order even at war prior to the whole starkiller thing?

Its not explained well in the film, but the Resistance is basically a rogue military group working behind the republic's back to fight the First Order who are clearly a looming threat but the Republic doesnt wanna do war with.

Yeah cool but when the first order started blowing up planets why didn't the republic get involved at all? Why didn't they do the thing ANH did with the Falcon coming in to save the day at the last second but it's a huge presumably cool Republic space warship?

The story of history repeating itself was - I believe - an obvious and intentional thing, and the structure of meeting a character who comes from a nowhere desert and discovers that she has a power within her, where the bad guys have a weapon that is destructive but that ends up being destroyed - those simple tenets are by far the least important aspects of this movie, and they provide bones that were well-proven long before they were used in Star Wars.

I read this too. He claims this movie was all about character development, which is bullshit because the only one who seems to develop is the greasy dark Jedi dude.

Also it's a minor critique, but Kylo would have been so much cooler if he hadn't taken off his mask, but I guess they wanted that same scene as with Darth Vader where he's all badass and you wonder what he looks like, but then the moment comes when the mask comes off you're like "awww he's retarded/cripple!, no wonder he's so mad!"

If episode VII really is a carbon copy of episode IV, does that mean the plot to episode VIII has to be near identical to episode V? (in terms of the resistance losing to the first order and kylo kicking rey's rear end)

If Disney really meant keeping the new star wars "old school", that means they're just giving us the original trilogy again but making it more modern and prettier

tbf his casting decisions were so loving on point.

Can someone explain if Neil Degrasse Tyson was talking out of his rear end when he said BB-8 wouldn't be able to roll around on sand? I know they had a working prop of BB-8, and I know Neil Degrasse Tyson likes to nitpick sci-fi movies and he's usually right, but I can't find anyone responding to that tweet saying he was mistaken.
