To January 17th 2016, an overall total of between 1,863 and 2,422 civilian non-combatant fatalities had been alleged from 310 separate reported incidents, in both Iraq and Syria. However, some caution is needed given the significant challenges of casualty verification at present.

The Coalition has so far confirmed seven of these incidents as causing civilian casualties – three events in Iraq and four in Syria. We estimate that between 23 and 34 non-combatants died in these incidents. The Coalition has also reported that it likely killed an estimated 10 to 23 Iraqi forces in a confirmed ‘friendly fire’ event at Fallujah on December 18th 2015.

In addition, it is our provisional view at Airwars that between 798 and 1,122 civilian non-combatants appear likely to have been killed in 132 further incidents where there is fair reporting publicly available of an event – and where Coalition strikes were confirmed in the near vicinity on that date.

Some 55 of these incidents were in Iraq (395 to 573 reported deaths) and 77 events in Syria (with a reported fatality range of 403 to 549.)

A simple spelling mistake has led to a 10-year-old Muslim boy being interviewed by British police over suspected links to terrorism.

The boy, who lives in Accrington in Lancashire, wrote in his primary school English class that he lived in a “terrorist house”. He meant to write “terraced house”.

His teachers did not realise it was a spelling error and instead reported the boy to the police, in accordance with the 2015 Counter-Terrorism and Security Act, which states that teachers are obliged to alert the authorities to any suspected terrorist behaviour.

As a result, the child was interviewed on 7 December by police and the authorities examined a laptop found at his family home.

Home Office launches inquiry as asylum contractor G4S agrees to have doors painted over after they become targets for abuse

The Home Office has launched an investigation into the housing of asylum seekers in the north-east of England after claims that they are identifiable by their red doors.

James Brokenshire, the immigration minister, ordered an inquiry after the Times found asylum seekers in Middlesbrough claiming their distinctive accommodation was making them targets for abuse.

Brokenshire said: “I am deeply concerned by this issue and I have commissioned Home Office officials to conduct an urgent audit of asylum seeker housing in the north-east.

Immigration minister James Brokenshire said he was deeply concerned by the claims.

“I expect the highest standards from our contractors. If we find any evidence of discrimination against asylum seekers it will be dealt with immediately as any such behaviour will not be tolerated.”

quote:

The properties investigated by the newspaper are run by Jomast, a subcontractor for G4S, which holds the asylum contract for the north-east.

Jomast and G4S have denied the asylum seekers are singled out by housing with red doors.

But the Home Office began an audit after the report found asylum seekers claiming they had been targeted with dog excrement, eggs, stones and a National Front symbol on their doors.

Of 168 properties identified by the Times as Jomast housing in the city, 155 had red front doors. Of the 66 residents spoken to by reporters, 62 homes were occupied by asylum seekers.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/01/19/key_voice_encryption_protocol_has_backdoor/

quote:

The UK government's official voice encryption protocol, around which it is hoping to build an ecosystem of products, has a massive backdoor that would enable the security services to intercept and listen to all past and present calls, a researcher has discovered.

Dr Steven Murdoch of University College London has posted an extensive blog post digging into the MIKEY-SAKKE spec in which he concludes that it has been specifically designed to "allow undetectable and unauditable mass surveillance."

He notes that in the "vast majority of cases" the protocol would be "actively harmful for security."

Murdoch uses the EFF's scorecard as a way of measuring the security of MIKEY-SAKKE, and concludes that it only manages to meet one of the four key elements for protocol design, namely that it provides end-to-end encryption.

However, due to the way that the system creates and shares encryption keys, the design would enable a telecom provider to insert themselves as a man-in-the-middle without users at either end being aware. The system would also allow a third party to unencrypt past and future conversations. And it does not allow for people to be anonymous or to verify the identity of the person they are talking to.

In other words, it would be the perfect model for the security services, who can apply pressure to a telecom company and then carry out complete surveillance on an unidentified individual.

While it is surprising that the official UK government system would have such a significant backdoor, it is perhaps less surprising when you consider who developed the spec: the information security arm of the UK listening post GCHQ, the Communications-Electronics Security Group (CESG).

The CESG – and the UK's civil service – started pushing the approach late last year and has incorporated it into a product spec called Secure Chorus. It has also set itself up as an evaluator of other products and is trying to market its approach commercially by pushing it as "government-grade security." One example of a product already going through this evaluation is Cryptify Call, available for iOS and Android.

To me, the interesting point here is that this shows the government really, truly believes their own bullshit about encryption and backdoors (either that or they've knowingly offered the rest of the world a backdoor into private government comms in order to make a point, which doesn't seem likely). Or, since the system was developed by GCHQ, you could suggest that maybe GCHQ is trying to keep an eye on the rest of the government to make sure they don't try to do anything to limit their spying :tinfoil:

Presumably this will get hacked by Russia or China or somebody, and they'll realise what a bad idea it is (for them, not us).

I wonder if the EU referendum might be helpful here. Immigration is going to be the central issue. Obviously if we vote to leave then the issue goes away somewhat and UKIP loses its main reason for existing. If we vote to stay then that still might diffuse the issue a bit (and damage UKIP). Immigration perhaps more than any other issue is one where the public feels mainstream politicians are out of touch and don't listen to them. Having it decided in a high profile referendum might take away some of that resentment over being ignored. Labour politicians will be able to state that the british public decided to remain in the eu as a response to a lot of immigration questions.

I'm probably being overly optimistic.
Yes. UKIP will want to close the door on immigration even if Britain leaves the EU, so they will continue to exist as a nationalist party. That's why campaigning to leave on immigration grounds is so dangerous. Britain can leave the EU and be a tolerant welcoming country that treats all immigrants equally, rather than one with a Eurocentric bias where non-EU immigrants are easy targets. But to do that we'll have to vote to leave UKIP and BF and EDL too.

Big changes in polling results caused by a change of wording are pretty common, you should always read the exact wording of a question.

I also think that "who will win in 2020" is a useless poll for assessing the public's view of Corbyn. It's very far away, the politically savvy will be aware of the tories stacking the deck in their own favour currently and the overriding narrative pushed by the press has been "it is impossible for this man to win". It tells us nothing about how people are thinking of voting themselves, only how they think the rest of the country will vote and the only source for information on that scale is the press.

I'd like to see more polling about policies, as its far more useful (it tells us which ones he should be pushing as vocally and as often as possible)!

As neither of your parents are British citizens it would depend entirely on whether one of your parents or both were legally settled in the UK ie they could stay indefinitely. If this is the case and they were married or are married now (this only matters if your were born before I think June 06) then you're a British citizen.
