fits posted:finally announced it was for martin gernat and 4th I'm okay with this deal. Oilers needed to improve their bottom 6, trading Gernat doesn't hurt as we have a ton of other LHD prospects, and a 4th's a 4th.

The same media who was salivating for days before the Oduya signing when it leaked out that Dallas was negotiating with him, because that was the guy who would turn everything around on the back end. The best case scenario is like with Jason Demers where a guy who was widely thought too be a below average / borderline top 4 d-man turned out to be average at his position. Except with Russel the equivalency is a guy who is thought to be just god awful at everything he is required to do to play his position turns out to be able to play 17 minutes a night oon the 3rd pairing without sinking the teams chances of beating anyone decent.

Hamhuis is a significant upgrade to most of Dallas's defense. He would have fit perfectly. I'm not sure exactly what Benning was asking for so it might not have made sense, but Kris Russell is really bad and Dallas probably got rid of a better player, not to mention the futures.

I didnt mean too say that Hamhuis was the same as Russel, but giving up value for either one made no sense. You would but hard pressed to show that adding Hamhuis would put the Stars over teams like Anaheim, LA, Chicago, or St Louis. I dont think Hamhuis would have been a very good fit in Dallas anyway - not with the run and gun style the Stars play where the forwards fly the zone every chance they get and the #1 qualification for a d man is making 90 foot passes at high speed.

The Vancouver radio guys were going on today about how Benning had the deal done and that ownership interfered with it at the last second, demanding more and unrealistic things. They also made it sound like the thing went sour due to a spat between the team owners that goes back to when Aquillini bought the Canucks and that Aquaman is still bitter about that lawsuit or whatever. If it's true then I'm 100% out on this team until it's sold. Benning might be a crap GM but if he has an even worse owner pulling the strings behind the scenes then what's the loving point anymore?
