the big stupid elephant in the room about Trump's immigration bullshit is that there is no way he could be more aggressively anti-immigrant than Obama has been already. Obama has done everything short of building that pointless wall; he has deported more immigrants than Bush did, is paying the Mexican government to get medieval on people from central America so that we don't have the uncomfortable spectacle of woman and children asking for refugee status at our borders, and is keeping people awaiting deportation in horrendous, prison-like conditions. Obama has deported like 2.5 million people. Trump's got his work cut out for him if he's gonna try and beat that record and gently caress, at least the wall would be some kind of jobs program (the kind that Obama never had the balls to even really try for). We can just pretend it's the modern WPA-style jobs/infrastructure program that we've needed since 2008

If Trump actually gets to build his wall and if it actually curbed illegal immigration, I wonder how the sociopolitical landscape of Mexico would change. America's wink-wink pretend border has served as the release valve for poo poo-on Mexican citizens for fifty years. What would happen when a bunch of fed-up proles couldn't just up and hop the border when they think things are too awful/dangerous in their home country?

It's the same argument being applied to Trumps wall, I don't see how it would be different. The creation of either wont really do anything for jobs.

Wikkheiser posted:I thought the point of a WPA-style jobs/infrastructure program is that the infrastructure goes on to have added benefits to the economy, like highways and dams. If youre talking classic Keynesian theory you could even just pay people to dig ditches then fill them back in again and still achieve your goals. Having the stimulus spending actually do something useful is just a side benefit Also just watch as the wall becomes a metaphorical wall with like a few token pieces of actual wall construction for photo ops and then like infrastructure work on roads and stuff near the wall
