i've got great news for the thread, china tied war torn syria 2-2 at a neutral location, so they are not mathematically eliminated from the world cup yet! with two games to go, they are only six points back from football juggernaut Uzbekistan White Wolves, and can still catch them if they win both of their games by a very large amount and Uzbekistan loses their last two games.

catch all the highlights here

the last goal happened in the last few seconds of the game, so enjoy that for lols

That win is about on par with most battles won by a Chinese army in WWII so it's deserving of the monument.

Chinese investment in Panama has vastly expanded in recent years as Beijing has pushed to secure trade and investment deals around the world. The Panama Canal, the narrow choke-point through which virtually all Pacific-Atlantic maritime trade must flow, has been a particular target. In 2016, the Chinese state-linked Landbridge Group signed a 99-year lease for Panama's largest port, Margarita Island, which handles distribution of goods on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal. Chinese state enterprises have also looked to develop approximately 1,200 hectares of land around the canal.

Panama's change of heart suggests that Taiwan's other relationships in the region may be in jeopardy: Nicaragua also maintains relations with Taiwan, and it has also received billions of dollars of Chinese investment.

In 2013, Chinese billionaire Wang Jing signed a $40 billion deal to build a canal through a 170-mile swath of the country, a deeper and wider rival to the Panama Canal. Domestic opposition and red tape has so far prevented significant progress on the massive project.

Saying I’m from Hong Kong won’t suffice. They always retort I don’t look Chinese. The only way to satisfy them is to say I’m Hong Kong-born with Indian parents and that I’m also a naturalised American.

OK, that’s an unfair comparison. Chinese-Americans live in a democracy. Young Hongkongers fear the growing shadow of communist China will darken their future freedoms.

It’s fine for them to boycott the June 4 candlelight vigil with the rationale that the Tiananmen crackdown had nothing to do with them. But it’s self-denial to say they’re not Chinese. They need to wake up and see the colour of their skin.

Well in terms of press freedom, Reporters Without Borders just opted to set up their Asia office in Taiwan instead of Hong Kong. Taiwan ranks something like 51st in terms of global press freedom, HK 69th, China 138th, or similar (this is all from memory)

They feel there was freer press here under 80s British Colonial rule

obviously

i mean for one thing you had a series of colonial governors and not, you know, an "illiberal democratic" dictatorship, so that's a big difference

structurally, i mean you had the top as British, but they started letting locals take the civil service exams pretty early into the rule, and then stopped during wwii and reopened it up again to locals after that

the last governor, patten, actively promoted democracy as much as he could before he left office, which you know, kind of hypocritical, but is what it is

as to whether or not British rule is more liberal overall, i think that's a tough call, because obviously you had a certain amount of freedoms that you don't necessarily see in the lky sp regime; on the other hand, you have a colonial governor who answers to no local constituencies and is accountable to the British crown

so it's a real toss up

e: speaking of lky

quote:

Lee Wei Ling, the 62-year-old middle child of Singapore’s revered founding leader, released the emails on Facebook after her eldest brother Lee Hsien Loong, the city state’s current premier, launched a stunning broadside at her and their youngest sibling Lee Hsien Yang over their handling of the family estate.
