that's what I like to see when opening up the analysis (in seriousness though I think I should switch to playing 10+0 or longer for chess improvement; this was a 5+0 game and both players suffered from temporary blindness)

A slightly better tournament this weekend. The first three games are posted without comment. The first two my opponents just punted early. The third game I played for a quick draw because I didn't want to exert myself. Game four, though, is pretty wild. I was lost out of the opening but my opponent went for a endgame which gave me a chance to fight. We went through a number of transformations where I was basically just desperately trying to avoid passivity. Eventually, my opponent makes a mistake which doesn't throw the game, but lets me get control of the central tension. I actually thought I was winning, but it turns out the pawn endgame is actually losing for black. For reasons mysterious my opponent sacrifices a piece to try and clinch the draw, but the active attempt lets me win. Crazy game. All games should be copy/pastable into a pgn reader. [Round "1"] [WhiteElo "2175"] [BlackElo "1676"] [ECO "A04"] In this one my opponent plays some nonsense and quickly loses a piece. When he started playing normal he seemed kind of okay. { Black rating CFC } 1.Nf3 Nc6 2.d4 e6 3.e4 d5 4.e5 Nge7 5.c3 Nf5 6.Bd3 h6 7.Nbd2 Be7 8.Nf1 Nh4 9.Nxh4 Bxh4 10.Qg4 Kd7 11.Qxg7 Ne7 12.g3 Bg5 13.f4 Rg8 14.Qxf7 Rf8 15.Qh5 c5 16.fxg5 cxd4 17.gxh6 Qb6 18.Qe2 Nc6 19.Bf4 dxc3 20.bxc3 Qa5 21.Qd2 b6 22.Ne3 Bb7 23.O-O d4 24.Be4 Kc7 25.Nc4 Qc5 26.Nd6 Ba6 27.cxd4 Nxd4 28.Rfc1 Nf3+ 29.Kg2 Nxd2 30.Rxc5+ bxc5 31.Bxa8 Rxa8 32.Bxd2 Kd7 33.Bg5 Rb8 34.Rd1 Be2 35.Rd2 Bg4 36.h7 c4 37.Ne8+ 1-0 [Round "2"] [WhiteElo "1766"] [BlackElo "2175"] [ECO "B43"] My opponent plays some passive moves in the opening, misplaces their queen, and quickly loses a pawn. { White rating CFC } 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.Nc3 a6 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nxd4 Qc7 6.a3 Nf6 7.Bg5 b5 8.Nf3 Bb7 9.Qd3 d6 10.O-O-O Nbd7 11.Re1 Be7 12.h3 Nc5 13.Qe3 Ncxe4 14.Nxe4 Nxe4 15.Bxe7 Qxe7 16.Bd3 Nc5 17.Nd4 O-O 18.h4 Qf6 19.Ne2 Rac8 20.Ng3 Na4 21.c3 Nxb2 22.Bxh7+ Kxh7 23.Kxb2 Rc5 24.f3 Rfc8 25.Rc1 a5 26.Ne4 Bxe4 27.Qxe4+ Kg8 28.Qd4 Qxd4 29.cxd4 Rxc1 30.Rxc1 Rxc1 31.Kxc1 f6 32.Kc2 Kf7 33.Kb3 e5 34.d5 f5 35.Kc3 f4 36.Kd3 Kg6 37.Ke4 Kh5 38.Kf5 b4 39.axb4 axb4 40.Ke6 b3 41.Kxd6 b2 42.Kxe5 b1=Q 43.d6 Qb8 44.Kxf4 Qxd6+ 45.Kf5 Kxh4 46.g4 Kg3 47.g5 Kxf3 48.g6 Qf6# 0-1 [Round "4"] [WhiteElo "2175"] [BlackElo "2214"] [ECO "A05"] I play for a quick draw so I can hang out in Starbucks while everyone else wears themselves out. 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.g3 g6 3.Bg2 Bg7 4.O-O d5 5.c4 c6 6.cxd5 cxd5 7.d4 Nc6 8.Nc3 Ne4 9.Nxe4 dxe4 10.Ng5 Qxd4 11.Nxe4 Bg4 12.Qb3 Qb6 13.Nc3 O-O 14.Be3 1/2-1/2 [Round "5"] [WhiteElo "2193"] [BlackElo "2175"] [ECO "A34"] I get into trouble from misplaying the opening and desperately survive for four hours. i wasn't too happy with the direction this game was going, right up until black played 11...a6. it's a simple tactic to win a pawn for white, but i'm happy i saw it otb. black didn't see why you can't capture back the pawn, blundered into the wider tactic, and resigned shortly after. this game brought me over 1100 rapid on chess.com, so a very nice start to my weekend

Salt Fish posted:I like openings 3 good reasons to learn them I would agree. I stagnated for a long time in chess because I stubbornly refused to learn openings. Eventually I got sick of having bad positions every game and found some openings that spoke to who I was, and got better very rapidly over the next five years because I was passionate about learning my pet openings and getting nasty combos and winning with them. Now it is fair to say some players spend too much time on openings compared to other aspects of their chess. Different people learn different ways and some people get more mileage out of endgames and midgames. Some people benefit from having the plans and structures of openings imposed on their play though. Every coach's advice is good for someone and bad for someone else. That's my advice, as a coach.

That's over two years of active game time on lichess since they started their account ~9 years ago. That's about 22% of their life spent playing chess on lichess over that period. e: In other news, Firouzja passed 2800 with the European team championships. Youngest to pass the threshold and is now #2 in the world, albeit 50 points back of Carlsen. Is the plan still to start a new thread with the World Championship? That starts this week.

I think it would be nice - having an up to date OP and a roll call of currently active players and where they tend to play. Maybe put a queen's gambit reference in the thread title, that show attracted a lot of new players, or at least people like me who used to play at school and then lapsed.

No, Bd6 still works as the winning move. Like, the position after 1.Bd6 Qe8 2.Nxb7+ Kd7 3.Qxd8+ Rxd8 4.Bg3 and 5.Nc5+ is very definitely winning. It's just not "immediately win the queen" winning.

Why does it feel like 1200 opponents are as tough as 1600 opponents? When my rating dips or skyrockets it feels just as hard to beat people

I think a new thread for the World Championship would be fun. Unless it is flooded with people saying Nepo is a fraud because he played Nc6 while they ran stockfish for eight minutes at depth 40 and it showed Kh1 was 0.13 pawns better. God I hate chess.com or chess24 comments on live matches.

I tried reading "Openings for Amateurs" by Pete Tamburro based on some random recommendation on the chess.com forums but I think it's a bit above my level since I found it very hard to follow. Or are you meant to work it out yourself? Irving Chernev's "Logical Chess: Move by Move" does this. It literally explains every move of every game including the opening moves. And it's written for a beginner audience. https://www.amazon.com/Logical-Ches...&srpt=ABIS_BOOK

I also really liked the early parts of the Naroditsky speedruns for talking about general opening principles: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLT1F2nOxLHOcmi_qi1BbY6axf5xLFEcit This is especially useful at low ratings because people often deviate from any standard opening after like 5 moves. Eventually as the ratings get higher he starts assuming people know the openings by name but that's not for like 7 videos or so.

I think he gets to like 1200 before it's finally accepted. I've reached level 4 (~1600 elo) of the chessbrah building habits streams (the long YouTube edits) after someone recommended them earlier in the thread, and I will say they are hilarious and decently educational. Thanks to that goon.
