Regarde Aduck posted:But using this as an argument for suicide seems a bit... negative? Maybe I just misunderstood the original intent but making suicide easier for people just feels like giving up on the problem. I've suffered depression all my life but luckily never to the level of contemplating suicide. I'd hate to think that people would ever consider it a favour and progress to hand me a noose and tell me "gently caress society, you do what you feel is best". Take for example, the classic counterargument to a person's right to die, a teenager distraught over the breakup of their high school romance. They should be kept from irrational decisions, but I really doubt that they're going to ring up BOC, pay the £35 or whatever it is now tank deposit, drive to the nearest filling depot in their parent's hatchback, get the attendant to load bottle, etc. etc. For the same reasons as the painkiller pack size limit, there's more than a big enough barrier. At the complete other end of the spectrum, an older person suffering a crippling wasting disease but who can't afford to go to Switzerland might take a few days to plan that instead. That's a bad situation, but it's their call on it. There are some edge points. A worker laid off from their job, who comes under increasing financial pressure, who feels a failure at providing for their kids, who feels like a parasite whenever they're on the way to the dole office and they pick up a paper and read about scroungers; they might decide to take a few days to plan something like that. The solution to that is to stop treating people like that like poo poo in the first place, not to make them plan to throw themselves in front of a train instead of buying a gas bottle. I can't think of any problem that has been solved by that specific solution to the alleged scourge of welding gases, and a few that have been caused by it. Sorry to prolong suicide-chat, but wouldn't a heroin overdose be reasonably pleasant? Of course it is illegal, but not that hard to procure I'd have thought. Certainly not enough to make acid seem a sane alternative.

All it takes is some helpful soul to shoot you full of naloxone and your last blissful nod becomes your new worst day ever. Or you enjoy it so much you decide to carry on living and then fall into a smack addiction.

Certainly not enough to make acid seem a sane alternative. opiates have a hella big therapeutic range so the LD50 is high, and it's normally asphyxia through some means or other. On top of that, good loving luck dosing your heroin in the only country that had a sample range of 1-100% on the street. There really aren't many ways to die that can be described as pleasant. e; frankly if I had an affordable and reliable heroin source I'd have never given up the stuff, buying in the UK exposes you to far bigger dangers and damages than diacetylmorphine itself. And oh yeah, we both forgot Cioran, but I've never been able to get hold of any of his stuff translated into english. Guess what I'm saying is, don't ever let anyone tell you life is precious or that you should be grateful for it or that suicide is the preserve of the mad or terminally ill. It's entirely down to the individual whether they should want to continue their life or perpetuate the cycle or pick the right moment to jump off. I mean, weird anime note aside our laws are bizarrely victorian and we could really do with going with the "if it was consensual you do you" kind of approach. The fact the government's decided dominatrixes are a little too outre for their tastes and have tried to clamp down on kink is bizarrely paternalistic.
