I also had that very issue. But even as a kid I was vaguely aware of a lot of creepy stuff going on under the surface. Weird animal/mutant kissing, people getting turned into faeries, Magik chained up to a wall in a bikini doing her portrait of Dorian Grey impression. Creepy.
