I need a new game to play.

Ideally:
A game like Freelancer that isn't Freelancer. I played the living gently caress out of Freelancer, because it's so god damned great, so yeah.

Also, love empire building sims, anything like Civ5 or Anno1401 that aren't those games.

I've been out of PC gaming for MANY years. I'm looking for a FPS deathmatch experience similar to Quake III. (Railgun instagib was my favorite.)

They don't make these games anymore. TF2 is a decent throwback, but you're just going to get hyper-realistic coverbased boring shite "shoot at the muzzle flash of someone shooting you" shooters. With lots of lens flare and bloom.

Are there ANY games at all like Anno 1404: The Guild?

Preferably The Guild 1 and not The Guild 2, which added a bunch of bad things.

Christ I love everything about the idea of that game and nobody will make a proper one that has slick presentation and isn't bugged to hell.

Looking for games where I can just sort of press a couple buttons and then put my attention somewhere else (like the forums or Netflix or something) for a few seconds/minutes and come back to it. Games that I can sort play while multitasking pretty much. Sims 3 has been my go to game for this but Civ V seems to fit decently as well despite not particularly caring for it. Wondering what other options there. PC, DS, PSP, Android, and anything commonly emulated on the above systems (PS2/GC/Wii stuff is a no go on my rig) would be best options.

The (perennially suggested) Anno series is great for this, either Dawn of Discovery/Anno 1404 or Anno 2071. It's real time production chain management/empire/trade route game, so you build/tweak/layout stuff here and there, and then let it run for awhile and make adjustments as new needs arrive or demand increases. The default speed is kinda glacial but there's like 3 speeds of fast forward.

I always recommend Anno1404 over 2071, because the aesthetics are gorgeous.

I'm really into games that give very little to no exposition, and you spend the game trying to uncover what is going on. Whether it be a point and click adventure game, or (more preferably) a first person exploration game. Gone Home is probably my favorite game, and until Firewatch or Routine come out, I'm kind of stuck. I'm told the Myst series is really, really good and pretty much fits the bill for me but I was wondering if anyone knew any others. I'm kind of rambling here, but pretty much any game that has you exploring and investigating something that happened (whether it be deep sea exploration, a space station gone dark, etc), like reading emails or journals to piece together what's happening/happened, is what I'm interested in. First Person is a plus but not a requirement!

Ordinarily, I would recommend the The Guild off of GOG, where you could delve into tons of dastardly plots which involve bankrupting a rival, framing him for a crime, having him executed, and resurrecting his corpse as an undead servant. Sadly, it was just taken off of GOG's catalog. The next best thing I can recommend, however, is its' sequel, which I admittedly have less experience with. From what I hear, The Guild 2: Renaissance is supposedly the definitive version of the game if you were thinking of picking it up off of Steam.

The Guild is amazing, The Guild 2... less so.

I don't think I played the Renaissance addon, but I remember it being so littered with broken systems and go-nowhere mechanics, it was really hard to love. They expanded the game a bit too much to the point where your building is constantly having firebombs hurled at it, and you're being assaulted nonstop in the streets as well, and you do a lot of tedious town walking trying to arrange meetings with the woman you're courting.

Some developer with a decent amount of money and ability to present a game needs to make a new Guild, dammit.

Bioshock 1&2, not the biggest fan, but they're alright.) Looking for freedom more than anything, I like multiple endings, I love having to think decisions through and them changing the way the game turns out.

The Witcher has multiple endings and lots of interesting intertwining plot elements to quests, as a small spoiler-y for instance:

In chapter 1, I slew some monsters that were harrying a cargo handler, and some faction of guerrilla elves took the weapons (i could have stopped them, but I let them), so anyway, later in chapter 2, a drug peddler whose drugs have infested the elves young and gotten them addicted gets assassinated with a wicked barbed arrow from the shipment, the game even put on a little cut scene about it, and Geralt pondered about having to stay neutral if he can with regards to larger conflicts, I then got a big fat red "QUEST FAILED" that I had been working with the drug dealer.

The game just oozes love and is deep as hell in lore, but it just lacks polish, if you can get past that (which isn't even that hard), it's really something special.

Caeser's Palace for SNES is KIND OF like that.

You get to wander around the casino and pick what games you want to play, there are high roller areas you initially can't access, there's an ATM/save system with passwords, where you can purchase scratch off ticket games to play, horse race betting, keno, and randos around the casino you can talk to.

Bonus points if the game is zoomed in enough that there is maybe some exploration or combat oriented stuff, dungeoneering etc.

Fight Night owns the genre, sadly, so I'll make some weird suggestions:

The UFC games are solid as hell and worth playing. More complicated than Fight Night or boxing in general, but really in depth create a fighter and career stuff.

There's a sport management type game called Punch Club that was really fun, you don't control your fighter in the fights, but you do his training regimen and decide his available attacks in a fight and stuff. Kinda like River City Ransom meets a Rocky movie... or something?

You ever played Greatest Heavyweights on Sega Genesis? To me, it's the best boxing game of all time, and essentially the blueprint for Fight Night. There's a decently robust create a boxer, and a really fantastic career mode w/stat training and whatnot.

If I was attracted to the beautiful open-world, casual FPS sandbox, pseudo-mmo survival game feel, would this be a decent place to start? Am I right in saying the standalone version is cleaner with better quality of life interface but the mod version has more stuff going on (missions, gear variety, maps)? Are there similar games I should check out first that aren't morbidly overpriced?

I figure I might even have some fun playing the base version of Arma 2 as well but honestly I know very little about the game. I just like how it looks.

Rust is $20 and goes on sale frequently.

I got bitten by DayZ and quickly moved to Rust for my survival dick punching game. It's gorgeous (just got a recently graphical overhaul), sandbox in its basically purest form, and lets you achieve a real zen about managing your resources and surviving.

The main predators are humans though. There are wolves and bears, and an attack helicopter event on the reg, but 90% of the time you die will be to other players, and there's 0 chill about it, if you see someone, either kill them or run.

I have a pretty general question for the thread. I haven't paid *tons* of attention to game news in the past... 2 years or so? I'm looking for games that came out in that time period that:
-Have a laid back pace.
-Are on Steam or another PC distribution platform.
-Have cerebral gameplay. Spreadsheet games are acceptable; as long as there's some sort of strategy or thinking involved I'll be okay.
-Not a pure puzzle or adventure game. The genres I play the most are RPG and strategy games; I'd be open to management games, survival games, whatever else if it meets the other criteria.
-Nothing actively "hard". Probably anything that reviewers wouldn't go out of their way to describe as "unforgiving" is going to be fine. No roguelikes for this reason, though.

What do you guys like that fits this description?

Stellaris. It's the best strategy game of the last decade (IMHO). The pacing is glacial, but the depth is abyssal. Seriously, even running top speed non-stop exploring your home turf in a tiny circle and expanding your empire takes an hour+

If you play a xenophilic empire and are chill, you can just expand, explore and sucker punch people with quick wars. I'm trying for a federation victory right now and it's neat.
