Why MTGOX Exploding Is Good News (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 2 hours ago by skilliard4

Mtgox has always caused trouble with Bitcoin. This event should completely kill them off, and they can no longer cause harm to Bitcoin. Many crashes in the past have been due to issues with their infrastructure. Now we have one more problem out of the way, and people will go to more reliable exchanges. It sucks for the people with Bitcoins in there, but for everyone else it marks a monumental date.

I'm expecting us to get back to $800/BTC tonight.

gently caress you got mine indeed

Yes. Very illuminating and confirmed my long-held beliefs that one should be cautious about EVER relinquishing control of one's finances. I'm even considering getting rid of my accountant.

It's me, I'm the guy treating a work of fiction like a real-life cautionary tale

cold wallet is a bit of a misnomer really. all it really means is that the private key isn't kept in an online form but instead printed out and stored somewhere.

you are able to look up and see how much is in any "cold wallet" by looking at the blockchain (because the blockchain is just a glorified bloated transaction ledger) but unless you know a weakness in the elliptic curve crypto that is used in the public-private key system of bitcoin that is all you can do unless you have physical access to the offline private key.

just cold wallet sounds more cyberpunk than "offline backup".

i too, love the fact that at any time someone can see how much "money" i have

did he clear it out? that's what a true believer would have done.

BitCoin Financial Services? (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 3 minutes ago by merridewtech

Do you think the BitCoin economy would benefit from a financial institution that had a debit card like system?

Like a bank, a website/client that would have your wallet, and then a debit card that can send transactions with a pin number.

And maybe even better if the website could auto exchange (if you want) BTC for USD when the merchant prefers it, or does not accept BTC.

Are there any other services you wish you could get from BTC that you don't? Multiple different coin types in a single wallet?

I'd envision this as a free service myself.

that's not like a bank.

that is a bank.

Grateful Mom - Bitcoin changed my son's life for the better (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 13 minutes ago by katiedog

As a mom who saw her son wasting away his life on the couch playing video games, I was very grateful when my son discovered bitcoin. My son has learned the fundamentals of finance, computer security, digital mining and cryptography.

He is now employed and very successful. I believe the interest in bitcoin is what turned it all around for him.

The economy makes it very hard for young men just starting out. I believe bitcoin is one of the most successful social program to get young men to work. No government has ever created a program that trained as many young men as the bitcoin phenomenon. Young men becoming mining or coding means they are not out getting into trouble.

This mom is very grateful. Thank you bitcoin for turning my son into a man.

Oh I didn’t see it coming but it came via lan
