Talking about Pocket Camp is fine here, but there is a dedicated thread for it right here.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Tobidase Doubutsu no Mori [Animal Forest: Jump Out!] in Japan) is the latest release in Nintendo's Animal Crossing series, released exclusively for the 3DS console.

What in the hell is Animal Crossing?

Here's the pitch: You're a child of indeterminate age, leaving home for some reason to start a new life in Buttville, Dicktown, or Dongtopia. When you arrive, you find that the town you're going to be living in is occupied entirely by anthropomorphic animals, and are quickly indebted for large sums of cash by a seedy raccoon, who sets you up with a home to live in with little or no input from you in the process, and essentially forcing you to scrounge for cash in a town with no open jobs by selling garbage and fish.

That's the set up for Nintendo's Animal Crossing series, and in case you aren't already familiar with the games, things get a lot weirder than that.

Gameplay in Animal Crossing is a light, casual affair that tends to defy genre classification. It is, essentially, a life simulator. There's no real point to the game, you just wander around your town talking to the inhabitants, decorating your home, enduring horrible puns, and paying off your debts to ol' Tom Nook. The game runs on your system clock, and as such time passes realistically. On a day-to-day level, this means that late at night all of your shops will be closed and your friends will be asleep in their homes. On a more global level, there are holidays held on particular days (both matching up with real-world holidays like Christmas and Halloween, and game-world original holidays and events, such as the Fishing Tourney). I have heard it described as "Zen, in video game form." It fits.

So what's new in New Leaf?

Animal Crossing is one of those series which often gets flak for being "just the same thing over and over," and for the most part, that's true. Fans of the series can appreciate the changes from one game to the next, some big and some small, that make the experience more enjoyable, but the scenario has essentially been the same since the original.

New Leaf represents quite possibly the largest change of formula the series has ever seen. Obviously, there are the usual upgrades - better graphics, more items, more clothing customization options, new stores and characters, and so on. This time, adding to the bizarre nature of the plot's setup, you are declared Mayor of the town as soon as you arrive. This isn't just a formality, either. As Mayor, you make decisions about the town's layout and issue ordinances that effect the behavior of the townsfolk, the prices of items sold in your shops, and various other aspects of your town.

I'm a returning fan. What else is new!?

Aside from that one major change, there are a number of other improvements and additions to the game:
  • The art style has shifted a bit, giving characters (both players and animals) more human proportions, and plants more realistic foliage.

  • Being a 3DS game, it's in 3D. Response has been positive - this is a first-party Nintendo title, so expect the 3D effects to be gorgeous.

  • You can customize your character's pants and socks, as well as the other bits you've been able to modify in the past. Colored contacts allow you to change your eye color.

  • Your custom designs can be used in more ways: In addition to wearing them as clothes and using them as wallpaper, you can now use them as patterns for furniture or hang them on your wall as a painting or poster.

  • New stores, and new characters to go along with them, including a pawn shop-style store that gives you higher sell-back prices, a shoestore, a gardening store, and a dance club where K.K. Slider DJs.

  • The island from the Gamecube version makes a return, and now houses a host of multiplayer minigames hosted by Tortimer (the mayor in previous games, now retired), rewarding players with special items and furniture.

  • More villagers, including new animal types, and new villager personalities.

  • More varieties of fish and insects, 72 in total.

  • New fruits (lemons, bananas, mangoes, persimmons, durians), which can all be planted as trees just like the old fruits.

  • Fruit baskets allow you to carry up to 9 fruits in one inventory slot, making gathering and selling fruit both less tedious and more profitable.

  • You can swim!

  • Custom patterns can be converted into AR codes, then scanned with the 3DS camera to quickly and easily import others' designs rather than hand-copying them.

  • Homes, including both player and animal homes, can be built anywhere, rather than only at specific places. Player characters on the same device each get their own home, rather than sharing a single home like in Wild World - but only one player can be Mayor!

  • Other players can visit your town both locally and via wireless. Players can also visit a "dream version" of your town, which is identical but changes they make are not saved. This allows you to show off your town without worrying about some rear end in a top hat cutting down your trees, tossing garbage around, and burying pitfalls all over the place.

  • Much more variety in home customization, both indoors and out, including changing styles and colors, roof styles, yard styles, etc, and choosing where to add extra rooms and in what order.

  • And more!

Welcome Amiibo update is live :siren:NOW:siren: New copies of the game (physical and download) will come with this update pre-installed. Those who already have the game can download the update for free!

Here's what's new:
  • New area added to the game- Harvey's Campground, complete with new character Harvey. Harvey has new furniture items for sale, using the new currency MEOW coupons. (More on that later.)

  • New items! All(?) new furniture introduced in Happy Home Designer are now in New Leaf

  • New characters! In addition to the Amiibo cards already released, they're coming out with 50 new Animal Crossing Amiibo cards featuring 50 villagers not previously found in New Leaf. (They are from other Animal Crossing games?)

  • Amiibo functionality! Scan any Animal Crossing Amiibo card to invite that animal to visit your campground. From there, you can buy any of the furniture shown in their camper, OR invite them to live on your town. (One villager per day) To do this, you need the Magic Lamp furniture item. Interact with it, and Wisp the ghost will pop out and grant you one wish per day. Scan an Amiibo card or figure to get started.
Note: if you made a house for a character in HHD then they'll have that same house when you invite them to New Leaf

  • Got a full town? No problem! When you invite a villager from the campground, :siren:you get to choose a villager to evict!:siren: Got that one annoying villager who has stuck around for the last year and just WON'T loving LEAVE? Now you get to kick their rear end out! Cathartic, isn't it?

  • You can also scan Amiibo figures to invite special characters to the campground, and not just the Animal Crossing crew! There are also exclusive villagers for Splatoon, Legend of Zelda, and Monster Hunter*! There are appropriate animal lookalikes for Callie and Marie, Felyne*, Wolf Link, Medli, Ganon, and even Epona! These characters come complete with new furniture items from their respective games, which you can purchase for MEOW coupons.
*Felyne comes from the Monster Hunter Stories Amiibos, which haven't been released outside Japan. But since Amiibo aren't region-locked, there's nothing stopping you from decking out your house Monster Hunter style.

  • Timmy and Tommy catalog gets an update if you have save data on your system for Happy Home Designer. From there, you can order giant furniture seen in HHD.

  • New currency system, Mutual Exchange of Wealth (MEOW) coupons. You can earn MEOW coupons by doing the sorts of things around town that you do anyway, like picking fruit and catching bugs. You can redeem them at a new kiosk next to Town Hall. You can spend MEOW coupons to buy the new furniture at Harvey's Campsite.

  • Update to Nook's Homes! There's a new interior decorating item, the Secret Storage, which you can access from the touchscreen anywhere in your house. This is separate from your normal storage, giving you a ton of new space to enable your hoarding tendencies squirrel away your stuff!

  • Once you complete Lottie's tutorial of the new features added to Nook's Homes, :siren:YOU CAN USE THE HAPPY HOME DESIGNER TOUCH SCREEN INTERFACE TO DECORATE YOUR HOUSE!:siren:

  • New minigames! Use the Wii U and 3DS furniture items to play Desert Island Escape (the same one from Amiibo Festival) and Puzzle League

  • New option when you restart your town. You can have Tom Nook appraise your old town, and give you a Bell valuation for it before you scrap it, giving you a tidy nest egg of bells to start with in your new town. You can even import your item catalog... or have Nook appraise that too for cash monies.

  • New camera features. Take silly pictures with Animal Crossing Characters using your Amiibos.

  • Finally: Downloading the update will clean your town of weeds and so on, so don't worry if you haven't played in a while! Now's the time to jump back in.

This looks stupid. Is this some sort of kiddy game?

Sort of! The Animal Crossing games aren't necessarily geared toward small children, but it has a definite family-friendly air to it, and your player character has the appearance of a child. The gameplay, being fairly light, is graspable for children, certainly, but there's plenty there for older gamers. The game's real strength, in my opinion, comes from sharing the world with your family. It's truly a game anyone can play and enjoy, and not just in the silly marketing way that you might see a movie tie-in game claiming.

That said, it's definitely a niche title. A lot of people will be put off by various aspects of the game, including the light gameplay elements, the required time management aspects, and the family-friendly atmosphere. A bloody action game, this is not.

The most beautiful sight in all of Animal Crossing.

- - So, Turnips. We used to have a separate thread for that; now we don't. Turnip shenanigans don't happen as often anymore, but when they do they can go here!
- Check your turnip prices at Re-Tail twice a day. They change at midnight and noon. Got a stupid high price? (200 or so and up) post it here!
- To advertise your turnip price, make sure to post all the following info:
    Mayor name
    Town name
    Friend Code
    Price
Timezone and/or how much longer the price is good for. (Re-Tail closes at 11pm)

- Tipping someone for opening their town so you can make mad turnip money is highly encouraged. If you're going to make a million bells or so, you can certainly drop 99k in a letter or give them some sweet, rare furniture you don't need, right?

:siren: Animal Crossing newbies please read :siren:

Before you go running off to visit other people's towns, there are a few general rules of conduct you should follow if you want to be invited back!

TunaSpleen posted:

1. Don't take flowers unless your host offers some, especially hybrids (usually the blue, purple, orange, pink, black, and gold ones) which are rare and challenging to obtain. Also don't chop trees that aren't yours.
2. If your host has paths set down, please use the paths for running and walk when venturing off of them to prevent the grass from wearing down and flowers from being destroyed.
3. Usually taking fruit is fine since it just grows back anyways, but do ask before clearing the entire town's supply or when taking perfect (unusually-shaped or colored) fruits since perfect fruit trees require additional effort to maintain.
4. It's assumed that the host has already purchased anything they might want from the stores before they opened their gates, but it's nice to ask first before you buy expensive/rare stuff just in case.
5. The Catalog is a red ATM-looking machine that appears in every Nookling store starting with the first upgrade. Almost every item that enters your inventory gets entered into the catalog and most can be purchased and mailed directly to your home during the next delivery period. To catalog something, just pick up an item and drop it again, then go home and order your own copy from that machine. It saves the host time and money when several people want the same item.

This etiquette applies to pretty much every Animal Crossing community out there. Have fun and play nice otherwise awesome people won't open their towns for fear of vandalism!

Frequently Asked Questions

- - Help! My character looks dumb. How do I make him/her look... not dumb?
- In the Animal Crossing series, your face is determined by the answers you give to questions before you arrive at the town. The idea is to give you a psuedo-randomized face, while keeping a method to create the look you want if you prefer. You can follow this guide to get the face you want.

- - Help! I followed the face guide and my character still looks dumb!
- Well, you can try getting your hair did. At the salon you'll be presented with a series of questions similar to those that determine your face. Unlike your face, however, your hair can be changed whenever you like. Here's a couple of handy guides for getting the hair and color you want:

- - Redd Sold me a fake painting! What a jerk!
- Crazy Redd will sell you fake paintings! In fact, usually he'll have 3 fake painting and only one real one (sometimes two). How do you tell? Thonky has you covered!

- - What does it mean when a villager is "in boxes"?
- That means the villager's possessions are all packed up and it's their last day in town. When a villager tells you what they will move out, that's the day they will be "in boxes." On that day, any visitor in your town can talk to that villager and invite them to live in their town... provided there's room!

- - OK, how do I know if I have room?
- You can have up to 10 villagers live in your town. Up to 9 will move in on their own. The 10th spot is reserved for villagers you invite from other people's towns, campers, or Streetpasses.

- -This dumb jerk moved into my town and killed all my flowers/wrecked my paths/destroyed my perfect fruit orchard and I already hate them! What do I dooooo?
- There's not much you can do at this point, but to prevent such things from happening in the future, you can consult this guide

Keep in mind also that villagers will not put their houses within 3 squares of a Public Works Project or another building. Don't want anyone destroying your perfect fruit orchard? Put a clock in it!

- - How do breed hybrid flowers?
- Consult this handy chart!

Hybrids are on the left, required parents on the right.

- - How do I make money in this game?
- Other than turnips? You can always hunt Island Beetles! Here's a handy guide:

- - What is this "duping" I keep hearing about? Are you guys destroying the Animal Crossing economy?
- Duping is... a thing you can do. Ask about it in the thread or the IRC/Discord channel if you're curious! As to the "economy" people around here generally don't give a poo poo about that. Folks here are pretty chill and will give you pretty much whatever you want if you ask nicely. We also don't do the whole "buying" villagers thing. That's just creepy!

We've got a Fashion Bash going on!

FASHION

To Participate in the Fashion Bash:

1. In your own town, grab a Hat, an Accessory, a Top, Pants, Socks, and Shoes. Buy six pieces of wrapping paper.
I would recommend not wrapping the items until you're ready to drop that specific item. A wrapped shirt looks a lot like wrapped pants.

2. At the train station, there will be small piles of wrapped clothing, sorted by type. Fashion Bashers take one item from each pile and put on whatever they get.You are now High Fashion Superstar. Take a picture. Post it for everyone. For bonus points, take your picture in the photo-booth for lasting memories.

3. Go to each pile, wrap the item you brought with you, and drop it for the next visitor. If there are too many pants, don't drop the one you brought. Same for accessories.

4. Bonus points: Get your hair done. Set the slider to max formal, and use the bottom-most answer every time. This will give you a Random and Very Fashionable Style.

If you are not on my FList, add me (0001-3312-4455) and send me a PM, message me in the IRC, or find me on [url=http://steamcommunity.com/id/rhoga/]

Yeah it does. Apparently for the last few AC games it's been doing this but in New Leaf apparently it decays slower since it did it too fast in older games. Rain and snow helps to speed up grass 'recovery'. Nothing you can do can help grass grow back except by not walking on it I think.

Huh, that seems really dumb given there's no way to easily make paths. Then again I've never noticed it so maybe it only matters if you trample the same area over and over all day or something.

EDIT: gently caress I can't stop noticing all the dirt near the bridges now :negative: This is awful. I know they changed some things with patterns in this game, can you have them seamlessly line up with curved surfaces or can they still only be squares? I never bothered making paths because they didn't look natural at all when made up of only squares.

I'm actually really happy with all my neighbors, which is a first for the series despite playing it since the gamecube version. The worst I can say about some of them is that they're a bit boring. I kind of want Bubbles to move just because she's not that interesting, wears an ugly shirt, and has her house in a lovely place. That's nothing compared to when I played the game as a kid and spent ages sending trash to Oxford in the mail to get him to leave. I hated that jerk so much :argh:

As :goonsay: as this sounds, this really turned me off from the last few games. It absolutely drove me insane that they did that.

It makes sense to me, given that part of the appeal to these games is having your town look the way you want. If there was some way to fix it I would understand but its just weird to not let you.

EDIT: gently caress never mind. I just learned that you cannot snag campers from other towns.

I think planting flowers can encourage grass growth too, or that's what I've read somewhere.

This has helped. I just didn't walk on them and it was like 2 or 3 weeks.

you could fix the cityfolk grasswear with a savegame editor, but there isn't such a thing for the 3DS version, yet. Once a month or so I'd pop my SD card into my computer and just select "heal grass".

I just think Rodney's creepy. He has a...rapey-looking face; no seriously. He also sends me poetry all the time...

...and my girlfriend edited his phrases, so now when he greets you he yells :biotruths: at the top of his lungs, and ends his sentences with 'misogyny'. Thanks, girlfriend.

I added everyone on the gdoc with native apples. My gate is open and I hope you will come by and take some perfect apples to plant in town! They're the prettiest fruit :smug:

If I came over, could I convince her to move to Zutville? No clue if that works.

Sadly this does not work, hence my editted post. :sigh:
