No, bronies aren't special or new.
Every five years or so there's a new 'counter culture' of grown men who love a kiddy show and make porn of it and act like it's the first time this has ever been done before.
What was the last one? Lucky star? Lazy town? Ichigo mashimaro? and before that Cardcaptor Sakura, it goes on and on...
All the way back to the days when Tiny Toons was whispered around newsgroups as the example of how fans should keep a low profile now that show creators can go online as see who's watching their show and what they're 'getting' from watching it.

Bronies are just the latest iteration of pedophilic manchildren to latch on to a 'girls' show, corrupt it, revel in the taboo then call themselves victims of bullying.

Humbert Humbert has a boo boo because people ~just don't understand~ his love of nymphettes and his purity of heart. He is a poet, merely expressing his soul. How dare people condemn him.

See you in five years with whatever new cartoon the next gen latch on to.

Yeah but that poo poo never got a pop culture reference in a major AAA summer blockbuster.

No, I'm here. So true story time.

Three daughters here, innocently watched the show and, being kids, they naturally role-played and made themselves characters of the show. Yes, as their father I was obligated to participate, thus how my user name and picture were created (we found that pony creator online program much to their delight).

Then my ex found bronies. I'd watch the show with daughters (among other shows), and I'm a guy, so I must therefore be a Brony. Researched what this meant, and I explained that, in a way, the show is honestly based on porn.
Rarity: wassup good looking one
Applejack: country girl
Rainbowdash: athletic type/dominatrix
Fluttershy: innocent girl next door
The pink one: crazy party girl
The purple one: nerdy school girl

It amused me to no end as my ex slowly realized that this was reality, and was using small girls as ponies to entertain manchildren.

Yes, I've watched a lot of porn. Sure, I admit I've done kinky to odd things now and then. Equines? Nope. Cartoon horses? No. Children of any sort? F U if you even go there.

Bronies are different. Just stay as long as they keep to themselves and keep their perverted things away from kids, there won't be much trouble.

Somehow the japanese versions of bronies managed to get the anime industry to cater to them to the point of sometimes rejecting quality stories over creepy merch-generating shows or to at least throw in fanservice in otherwise normal childrens tv.
The manchildren are a demographic with money and they have a tendancy to buy merchandise by the tonnage, it overlaps nicely with the child toy market so it makes sense to have your kiddy cartoon flash an eight year old's panties every few episodes to get the kind of extra attention and money they need to continue producing their show.

Hasbro is madly trying to find a way to keep the brony money whilst keeping a wholesome image which is why you'll have producers saying that "It's a show for little girls. period. Bronies will not be pandered to!" but also you'll see brony documentaries (funded by bronies mostly!) with the participation of voice actors and have the occasional vague reference to brony memes.
To be honest, it has been their M.O. for decades to produce media based on what merchandise will sell. We all grew up watching cartoons that were basically adverts for the toys and playsets but it's probably the first time I've seen a company, very very reluctantly and however small, recognize the fetishist fans.

Take Supernatural, it has a massive following of people who read homoerotic subtext into a TV series about two flannel-wearing brother demon hunters who love heavy metal and drive a muscle car but every convention panel has the actors and writers desperately trying to avoid the questions by fans who are convinced the brothers bone eachother anytime they're not onscreen. They don't even pander to the audience, even a little bit, by throwing in a little more subtext.
So many shows with porny fandoms backing them just won't go "there" unless it's pandering to men asking for more cleavage and sex scenes of fully grown adults (see the evolution of comics and video games from 1970's to now, see HBO and Starz).

I don't think Hasbro can or will ever officially recognize bronies; their toy market shares are too valuable to be associated with creeps but I wouldn't be surprised in the future if there were cartoons or tv shows that decided to go with a few of fandom's whims for the sake of more viewers: More shirtless Spock, subtext between male Transformers, minor Star Wars characters given more screen time at the expense of plot and coherance for those precious figurine collectors and EU players...

That said, the specific appeal of these type of shows to the brony-type is that they are for children, about children and squeaky clean.
When Tiny Toons was followed up by Animaniacs with its "Hey, nurse!" jokes and cultural winks it was a hit with teens and adults but not the ones who like to imagine sex with animated children.

with transformers, hasbro acknowledges that there's like three sets of fans: kids, teens and adults, and they have different products for each group. they don't seem to do this with MLP and that really just tells you all you need to know.

Yeah, but Supernatural has literally gone "gently caress you" to those fans and written actual episodes where they mock that part of their fanbase. It would be like MLP introducing a bunch of older male ponies who are obsessed with the core cast in an episode followed by said main cast relentlessly mocking them and treating them like morons.

And they shouldn't. MLP should be marketed for young girls and YOUNG GIRLS ONLY.

Honestly, I still can't believe they put 'Derpy' in the actual show AND CALLED HER THAT. That's akin to having Kirk and Spock fall in love and make out with each other in the new Star Trek movies.

i don't honestly think that image or whatever matters when it comes to selling toys to children, which is what MLP exists to do. like the fanbases for sailor moon or precure or whatever are even worse than bronies but that doesn't stop japanese little girls from watching it.

i don't nesisarily agree with this. I could see some verson marketed towards adults, like how theyrs a community that's been going since the old series that make their own from scratch or w/e and it takes a certain amount of artistic skill. They're still kinda weirdos, but harmless. Basically the equivalent of adult transformers collectors.

The problem is that there isn't a group of predators who are into transformers. like that other poster said, the mega creeps gravitate towards nonthreataning things that can be sexualized, transformers are too much their own characters for that sorta deal. Transformers are less malleable in that way

That's because Bronies just pirate the episodes/comics, and draw art to post on the internet.
Parents of little girls are the only ones actually giving Hasbro any money, via DVD and toy sales.
