Twitch.tv just announced a flurry of new changes in the past 24 hours.

- Justin.tv is dead. Justin.tv, the parent company of Twitch, officially rebranded itself as Twitch on February 10th, as Twitch massively overtook Justin.tv in popularity. The next natural step followed last night, as Justin.tv announced it was shutting down after seven years of service. Let's not forget that Twitch gets very irate when you stream stuff that isn't related to video games, and with the removal of Justin.tv, there's no place for people to do that within Justin/Twitch's company ecosystem anymore.

- An automated audio content detection system has been added to Twitch for VODs. It's pretty new and the kinks are still being worked out, but copyrighted material in archived video will now be surrounded by a half-hour block of silence, which is a problem for pro streamers, for which it was common practice to stream music they like alongside themselves playing games against pubbies or practicing. It sucks to see this go away but it's understandable, especially if the rumors of Google acquiring Twitch are true. What isn't understandable is that this also applies to music from game soundtracks, and considering Twitch.tv is a website all about streaming video games, this is going as well as you can expect. For a chunk of time after the change, Dota 2's "The International" tournaments - THE big annual Dota 2 tournament held by Valve themselves - had their archives muted all the way through due to in-game audio, and Twitch has even managed to automatically mute content from their own channel.

- If your VODs are silenced, well, be glad they're not being loving deleted, because Twitch also announced swooping changes to the VOD systems, including limiting the archival of videos after their posting date based on whether or not you're subscribed to their premium service, and outright deleting all VODs ever made before this date.

Here is a brief list of the features that Twitch is planning to introduce to make up for this stripping of content:

I see no benefit to consumers on this end of changes. Is there anyone that knows more about the business end of Twitch that could justify these actions on Twitch's part? Did they really need that much extra space on their servers, could they not handle the current load of features on the website? Be sure to like my status and subscribe to my YouTube channel, thanks gamers.

I'm pretty sure implementation of ContentID was the exact thing I said would happen when we talked about the Google buyout last time

Based on people who have said the scraper mutes music FROM THE GAMES as well as streamers who sing notes, it sounds like the same exact scraper as Youtube's, a scraper that tries to solve an ant problem with a meteor

Free public domain music earns you a muted VOD. Crypt of The Necrodancer with its soundtrack also triggers muting, despite not being registered to the "this belongs to us, mute it if you find it" service.

That's great, because in their blog post about the changes, they specifically say that public domain music will be unaffected.

Can someone explain why this doesn't happen on Youtube? Why is Twitch the exception?

Quest For Glory II

It does happen on Youtube, a lot. Their scraper is bullshit and will claim public domain music, birds chirping, whatever.

http://boingboing.net/2012/02/27/ru...-own-copyr.html

I don't know what Twitch's process is, but the arbitrator of a copyright dispute on Youtube, is the company making the claim, rather than Youtube or a third party. So they get to be judge jury and executioner. Hopefully Twitch's process is a lot less painful.

I find Twitch relaxing. I hope these changes don't affect the stuff that I like, which actually doesn't include streamers playing their lovely music in the background. I don't mind the odd audio clip when something special happens - but it looks like those are in danger too.

If you stream "professionally", Twitch basically gives the largest payout for time spent right? I wonder how this is going to affect those people.

Pretty sure the PS4 also has the option to stream to Ustream or something, so you'll be fine!

Quick we gotta clean up our act so our billion dollar deal goes through! Mute all NES speedruns!

They don't give a gently caress about what's muted or not, they just gotta get something in quick so they get their payout.

Still leaves the huge loophole that you can still livestream copyrighted music. Wouldn't surprise me if they started handing out warnings soon to twitch accounts.

good thing I'm a giant hipster and the stuff I listen to is mostly unsigned artists.

also a simple pitch shift on the stream gets right past the filter.

oh yeah it's on the player too so in like 3 hours someone will make a thing that fixes it (you can already just download the whole video)

I'd say I was the kind of user that watched a lot more VODs than streams so this pretty much kills the site for me. Not only that but I know people that specifically didn't stream on youtube simply because twitch let them play music while they gamed and now that's gone as well so...

Yeah. The worst is probably how they claim they are doing it to "help broadcasters."

I did enjoy how Hitbox immediately began cannibilizing users though, that was funny.

it is to help us

it's to help us keep them from possibly having to pay one of their lawyers to argue that their TOS said it was against the rules so they're not liable.

Copywrite laws ruin everything good and decent in this world.

Whatever happened to the push some shithead developers were on about collecting a percentage/all streamer income because "they made the content". I hope someone stoned some of them to death and the rest backed down in fear.

Though I have not tested it I have read that simply pressing spacebar twice during a muted section unmutes it.

The only real alternative right now is hitbox, which is run by the scammers who ran own3d. There will probably be some growth of competition, but really this is just the end of the golden age of game streaming. I hope you like your streams as vanilla and boring as your youtube content!

Ask me about the Lina meta 7 years ago.

It's funny because prior to twitch I hadn't bought music in years, and because of twitch I've actually purchased certain things by the music industry. Nevermind the ridiculously effective free marketing game companies get through twitch streams.

Twitch gets very irate over lots of things. A very popular streamer lost her sub button because she was reading "offensive" donation messages on a stream flagged mature. They also are really hardcore about what percentage of the stream is you playing games and what percentage of the stream is you talking about things. They're pretty lenient toward some streamers, but if you are at all controversial some of the people at twitch are looking for any excuse to be dicks.

They seem to acknowledge that people enjoy watching specific streamers, but at the same time they often try to regulate the site like people are there to watch a game and who is broadcasting doesn't matter.

Hitbox exists and is better than twitch for streaming to friends. It only has a few seconds of delay while twitch's minimum is fairly huge. I've used them ever since twitch changed to the massive default delay years ago now.

If you want to make money streaming, welp. Hitbox is owned by the own3d guys, but ad revenue is poo poo on twitch and just as poo poo anywhere else. The only reason own3d owes so much is because they tried to offer big cash money for people to stream there, and it didn't work out on the fiscal side of things. Azubu didn't work out for the people forced to stream there. They lost almost all of their viewers. But the azubu site really sucks and hitbox's site is fairly usable in comparison.
