My Spider deaths have been on assassins and transmuters mostly, and I think Swamp has just felt easier because I haven't run into Mara or the Lernaean Hydra in a while. Mara can show up just as easily in Spider or Shoals as Swamp; I've had him drop in in Shoals once along with that unique water nymph whose name I can't spell, it was awful. I don't know about the Hydra, though, I think I've only seen him in Swamp.

I think it was the first kill of him for our team this tournament though, so yeah, rare-ish.

Jeffrey posted:You should probably turn off weapon skill and train dodging, at least until you have a different weapon. 4 EV is really low and once you hit the magic breakpoint for plate, you should get a lot with 28 dex. AC will get degraded by corrosion while EV won't, so it's extra-important to have both in slime. rMut would be nice to have as a swap but you can live without it, just manage line of fire around shining eyes. rC+++ would be a boon but you should be fine with rC++, the last pip doesn't do that much. If you know, what's the formula (or chart, or just a general idea of where they are) for the 'magic breakpoints' when Dodging starts working worth a drat in various levels of armour?

Jeffrey posted:I think it's lower than that - in plate it was definitely good around 16 last time I played. The whole formula is...complicated, I don't have a concrete one, it depends on aevp which depends on armour skill and strength, along with what armour you are wearing. There is a program here which doesn't have the armour skill effect or shield/barding effects, but calculates it other than that. I'm not sure how to use that program or that formula! But 'mid to high teens for plate' is at least something I can understand, so thanks.

For Ds, what are the new tier 2 fire and ice effects that replace scroll and potion conservation? The learndb still gives the old entries - fire (scroll cons, rF+, ignite blood), ice (rC+, potion cons, icemail) - but I'm not sure what it was replaced with. Is it cloud immunity like the tier 3 versions?

Heithinn Grasida posted:I think this is a very elegant and simple solution. But, personally, I feel that Crawl overuses the "strong early, weak late" method of balancing abilities. It makes sense in light of the game's difficulty curve, but it's just not much fun for most people. A similar solution would be to make spiny a scales facet instead of a tier 2 mutation. That way it should both come in earlier and not screw you out of a more interesting tier 2 that actually has an impact on game play. Since the scales facet is (otherwise) mostly defensive I would probably also give it a tiny bit of EV (either 0/1/2 or 1/2/3) if that happened. Kind of like Repulsion Field but with counter damage instead of permanent Repel Missiles.

kaschei posted:Ds are the second strongest class for spamming Makhleb or Qazlal invocations. Only DD match them for invocations. I think anyone having trouble between temple and lair:8 could do a lot worse than go heavy into invocations as a Ds of Makhleb - I think this is stronger than most melee builds (not Gr or DD). Does minor destruction do that much damage? I always thought it was - well, minor, equivalent to a level 1 or 2 spell, not something you can reasonably spam for victory to late Lair.

kaschei posted:Minor destruction deals significant damage and eventually nothing resists it. It has great range and is cheap as free to cast (just a little HP that Makhleb will refund on kill). It will deal with 95% of enemies and you have enough piety to greater destruction the other 5%. Isn't minor destruction's element random? I didn't think it turned unresistable at high Invo or anything. I did know it was free but I didn't realize the damage was more than like the 1d8 of magic dart, so that's good to know.

In non-extended questions because I've never gotten to extended: I am playing a VSFi of Okawaru. I have previously been using maces and flails with the hopes of picking up a killer demon whip someday, and have just finished a labyrinth on Lair 1. I have obtained two weapons: code:
Alternately, should I use the +10 dire flail, which is a worse weapon in a vacuum but has all those mods on it and is already a weapon type I know how to use? I have 11 Mace & Flail right now.

Sage Grimm posted:Dire Flail is base 13 damage, 13 delay. Katana is 14 damage, 12 delay. Min delay will be 0.6 aut per swing on both of them. Speed is irrelevant here. No cross-training bonuses between the two weapon skills. Clarity is nice, but generally unnecessary for fighters. You can also stack MR to protect yourself. Given that you already invested a middling amount into Maces, I'd say stick with the dire flail. I like shields because anything that makes me less dead gets my vote. I'm not 100% invested but in general I was expecting to use a demon whip or eveningstar. (I do not have an ego shield right now though so giving it up for the dire flail is no issue, it's not like I grabbed the Shield of Resistance or something.) I didn't realize dire flails went down to 0.6 though, I thought it was 0.7.

Not My Leg posted:Is there a place I can see all the invocations titles together? Also, what exactly are the criteria for invocations titles? Invocations as your highest skill, ****** of piety (not sure if that's required) and Invocations was the last skill to 27, first skill to 27, something else? The criteria for getting an Invocations title are Invocation being your highest skill and piety level. Gozag checks money on hand instead of piety. I don't know what Xom checks, if anything.

Not My Leg posted:That's basically what I thought, but I was most confused about what "highest skill" means when you have more than one skill at 27. If, for example, I have fighting and Invocations at 27, do I get an invocations title, or do I get Conqueror. Whichever one gets to 27 first is the one you're locked in with, IIRC (though your Invocations title can still change if your piety does, you're not going to lose having one).

PleasingFungus posted:this doesn't actually make any sense The lowest you can get by skill is 1.0 on any crossbow, right? I consider 1.0 kind of a breakpoint in attacks, in that I'd much rather have my actions under it than over it (reducing an attack from 1.0 and 0.9 is, to me, more significant than 0.9 and 0.8, simply because a lot of things happen at 1.0 and going faster than it is good). So, assuming you're not a crossbow specialist (which this character isn't), you are probably shooting slower than 1.0, which is bad, which Haste helps with. It's still very good with everything else, too, but that bump with a slow crossbow is more noticable.
