2.) Wands of Draining are super great for Death Knights since it lets you give supporting fire through your minions when a particularly nice gift/soul is in danger.

3.) Feature request: Please give Enslaved Souls their spell lists visible in the describe menu, since they still have spells. It's kinda weird that I can x-v to learn what Norris does but then when he becomes Slave Norris I have to use the wiki.

1) I always hate Shoals.

A few tentative corrections: monsters do use weapon delay roughly like players do, from what I understand. It's just that they never have any weapon skill, and so always attack at the base delay of the weapon.

Do you happen to know how this applies to things like deep elf master archers, who practically seem to machine gun their drat bows? Is that just a special trait they have rather than an effective weapon skill?

There is a program here which doesn't have the armour skill effect or shield/barding effects, but calculates it other than that.

I think this is a very elegant and simple solution. But, personally, I feel that Crawl overuses the "strong early, weak late" method of balancing abilities. It makes sense in light of the game's difficulty curve, but it's just not much fun for most people. A similar solution would be to make spiny a scales facet instead of a tier 2 mutation. That way it should both come in earlier and not screw you out of a more interesting tier 2 that actually has an impact on game play.

Since the scales facet is (otherwise) mostly defensive I would probably also give it a tiny bit of EV (either 0/1/2 or 1/2/3) if that happened. Kind of like Repulsion Field but with counter damage instead of permanent Repel Missiles.

Minor destruction deals significant damage and eventually nothing resists it. It has great range and is cheap as free to cast (just a little HP that Makhleb will refund on kill). It will deal with 95% of enemies and you have enough piety to greater destruction the other 5%.

You can't lean on Qazlal the same way because there's a piety cost to his invocations but they're better for killing and do area damage.

Isn't minor destruction's element random? I didn't think it turned unresistable at high Invo or anything. I did know it was free but I didn't realize the damage was more than like the 1d8 of magic dart, so that's good to know.

In non-extended questions because I've never gotten to extended:

I am playing a VSFi of Okawaru. I have previously been using maces and flails with the hopes of picking up a killer demon whip someday, and have just finished a labyrinth on Lair 1. I have obtained two weapons:

code:
i - the +10 dire flail of Gallantry {crush, rElec rF+ Str+3 Int+3 Stlth-}
M - the +8 autumn katana {slice, Clar}
Given I'm a VS and thus speed is good, also clarity is good, should I switch to long blades to use the katana? I've never gotten it before and I'm not sure how good it is long-term, though it seems like something you could clear through a lot of the game with! I'm not too far to switch.

Alternately, should I use the +10 dire flail, which is a worse weapon in a vacuum but has all those mods on it and is already a weapon type I know how to use? I have 11 Mace & Flail right now.

Dire Flail is base 13 damage, 13 delay. Katana is 14 damage, 12 delay. Min delay will be 0.6 aut per swing on both of them. Speed is irrelevant here. No cross-training bonuses between the two weapon skills. Clarity is nice, but generally unnecessary for fighters. You can also stack MR to protect yourself. Given that you already invested a middling amount into Maces, I'd say stick with the dire flail.

Are you invested into taking a shield with you? Demon Whip or Eveningstar are going to be your choices. If not then seek out a Great Mace.

I like shields because anything that makes me less dead gets my vote. I'm not 100% invested but in general I was expecting to use a demon whip or eveningstar. (I do not have an ego shield right now though so giving it up for the dire flail is no issue, it's not like I grabbed the Shield of Resistance or something.) I didn't realize dire flails went down to 0.6 though, I thought it was 0.7.

Whichever one gets to 27 first is the one you're locked in with, IIRC (though your Invocations title can still change if your piety does, you're not going to lose having one).

this doesn't actually make any sense

The lowest you can get by skill is 1.0 on any crossbow, right? I consider 1.0 kind of a breakpoint in attacks, in that I'd much rather have my actions under it than over it (reducing an attack from 1.0 and 0.9 is, to me, more significant than 0.9 and 0.8, simply because a lot of things happen at 1.0 and going faster than it is good).

So, assuming you're not a crossbow specialist (which this character isn't), you are probably shooting slower than 1.0, which is bad, which Haste helps with. It's still very good with everything else, too, but that bump with a slow crossbow is more noticable.

If you want to lower attack delay with okawaru... you use finesse.

The 1.0/0.9 thing is important tactically but statistically reducing your delay is more valuable the smaller your delay already is.

edit: obviously haste and finesse are useful separately but a) they don't stack b) you need a ton of crossbow skill to reach mindelay and "get all the skills" isn't usually very helpful

Well yeah, but I don't know if Logicninja is playing someone who worships Oka. (My note to play a crossbowman of Oka was seperate and I wouldn't be learning Haste on that character.)
