So the Cowboys defense has been way better this year then last has been bouncing around a lot for the last few weeks, and then someone mentioned, per play, they're actually worse this year:

Last year they gave up 6.1 yards per play and .42 points per play to the opposition.

This year they're giving up 6.1 yards per play and .49 points per play.

The difference is the offense is running 7 more plays a game, and running so much time off the clock the opposition is running 12 plays a game less. The Cowboys offense has 16 more first downs then they had through 6 games last year, and the opposition has 41 less first downs.

Doesn't really seem to be a turnover thing either.

2013: Cowboys: 8 turnovers, Opp: 12*
2014: Cowboys: 10 turnovers, Opp: 10

*6 came from the Giants game in week 1

Also, Broyles is a crazy Jesus freak, so the tweets aren't really damning. Ryan Broyles would solve a lot of the Lions offensive problems. I am a huge Ryan Broyles homer.

Ryan Broyles.

It's such a non-story. He was basically making self-motivational tweets about how he has to recognize why he's not playing. But I agree wholeheartedly about the need to implement him.

DVOA has them almost exactly league average, which is a huge improvement, though that's largely on the back of a great performance against Seattle.

Even worse, FO has them at no. 2 out of the entire league. Amazing that Joe Flacco becomes elite when he gets an OC that's actually goodabove replacement level.

I hate advanced stats because they are dumb but now they are officially 100% correct and infallible. FO loving hates Joe Flacco though. Whenever he does bad in quick reads he'll have a 5 paragraph essay on why he's bad. But when he is loving awesome he'll have a one liner like "Joe was 6/9 on third down" Meanwhile Nick Foles or some other dumb QB (Dumb being any QB that's not Joe Flacco) has a novel written about how amazing he was for throwing for 200 yards.

I'm a dumb irrational fan.

I mean, there is clearly something going on given Quinn's talent and they lost Chris Long so that doesn't help. Seems early to crow about it. We had similar reactions when the Lions drafted Fairly and then Ansah but this is the first season it's come together. And it is disgusting the way it has.

Yeah, it is. Each counter does it differently, but Football outsiders, for example, only counts ones where the defender got two hands on the ball or it hit them in the chest.

I think I remember that happening too. But I remember on the last series it was like 3rd and 10 and their receiver Michael Jenkins made some insane catch on the sidelines for a big gain. You knew it was probably over right after that play.

If we hadn't scored immediately on the goal to go situation we would have won. I hate when that happens. You should get some time depletion bonus in that situation for scoring on first down.

I am, to put it mildly, very skeptical anyone can teach a 25+ year old wide receiver how to do something as fundamental as catch. If he was coachable it would have happened already.
