It was almost inevitable after Sonic '06, right? I've played M&Ms, I've played Sonic, so we need to add something else to the list of the worst games of all time. Sonic I had some experience with, I could play it with a degree of skill. M&Ms was just a crock of poo poo and no one could play that with skill. Superman 64 I have no experience with, but ever since the one good LP of it got abandoned I've wanted to see the rest, even if it meant playing it. So here I am. I've seen Proton Jon play a few levels but other than that this is going to be blind. I'm going to play a level with live commentary. If I can beat it without losing my mind great, I'll post that level as one update. If I can't, I'll post the video to the point where I failed and then come back with a video I've practiced. That way I can show off the way the game feels to a newcomer without that gimmick going overboard. When enough is enough it's time to put some hard work in and finish a level the right way. I'm trying to approach it with a level of optimism. There are ways to play Sonic 06 that are fun, so maybe there is hope for Superman 64? The game: Superman 64 (or Superman, The New Adventures of Superman or the Worst Game of All Time) was released by Titus in 1999. In it you will fly through rings and fight enemies in a virtual world constructed by professonal wrestler Lex Luger. (This isn't Lex's first run in with the Superman univese: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G7SCdACewc) Lex has trapped Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and another guy in his torture rack and it is up to Superman to get them out. In the game a green kryptonite fog will limit Superman's powers, forcing him to collect power ups containing his x-ray vision and freeze breath. Superman has to clear ride stages (the rings) and action stages (fighting enemies) where he'll encounter villains from the 90s cartoon show. Superman can fly and punch. He can walk. Other than that he needs those power ups. Now you might be asking yourself: Blind? Are you crazy? What if you can't beat it? To that I answer "well I beat Sonic 06, and the very hard DLC. The very hard DLC was sometimes played blind too!" If that isn't enough for you don't worry, I have this: This LP would have started a few weeks ago but the guide got lost in the mail. It's here and now I have the sage guidance to complete this game. When I need help on my blind run I'll post the guide's advice in the video. The guide is just as well made as the game! Man it's so weird, this was on my to-do list of games to LP, along with Sonic 06, but you're way better at Sonic than I am, so I didn't mind. After the Sonic LP, I can't wait to see how you handle Superman. Edit: I dunno if I should say this or not, so I'm going to put it in spoiler tags. You seem to be playing on Normal mode, based on the compass in the corner. I'm pretty sure the final levels are locked out to you if you're not playing on Superman mode. Is this some kind of weird perfect-neutrality thing where every time you have fun you have to play a terrible game to balance it out? I'm glad to see this, though. I was just lamenting the untimely mid-way death of the previous Superman 64 LP. Edit: I see you're going with the Mario 3D Land "It's ok! It's not going to get us down" catch phrase. We'll see how long that holds up. Pro tip: it is not ok. Akratic Method fucked around with this message at 05:19 on Dec 18, 2014 |

Oh, this will be a trainwreck. Having actually finished this game once, I can completely understand how it rendered you incapable of human speech before the end of the first level. I also feel compelled to point out the same thing that's already posted in a spoiler tag. I won't repeat it here, but I will say that it's spoiling a non-obvious game mechanic and it's extremely likely that you will quit this LP if you don't read it early. Said mechanic is on page 4 of the instruction manual in bold. If you still don't want to know because you want to preserve the initial blind playthrough aspect, you should stop reading all youtube comments and PMs immediately, because you will have a lot of people spoiling it. Either way, I'm glad to see that you seem to enjoy the ring segments. Those were probably my favorite parts of the game too. And no, that's not sarcasm. I'm pretty sure the tornado section is timed, but there's no timer. It's bullshit and dumb and terrible but most of this game is.

Well gently caress. I appreciate it being pointed out. I had no idea but I'll address that. As for why I do this, if you've followed my PSP-TV channel you'd know I love trash. I love bad movies. I love naive/outsider/bad music. I love bad wrestling. On the other side of the coin my tastes can be really particular and pretentious in terms of "good" things I like. So it was only natural I'd start drifting further into bad games.

Just to be clear, I didn't mean "how long that holds up" in the sense of "until the phrase becomes annoying", I meant it as "until you are so irritated that you can't even say it anymore." And it turned out the answer was "less than a single episode." So this is going to be pretty glorious, I think, especially since apparently this awful introduction isn't difficult enough yet, and you have to go turn the frustration up a notch.

The characters that you need to rescue are Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Professor Hamilton. Hamilton was Superman's ally and scientist buddy until JLU came along.

Just for the record, the final level's aren't locked in a play through if I remember correctly. If you're playing on normal you can get all the way to the last couple of levels, at which point it will ask you to quit out, change the difficulty setting, then load back in, in a moment of pure insanity. I honestly do not understand why that contrivance is in there, but it is. Plus even if I'm wrong (I'm quite certain I'm not since I played this loving thing) then forget it, there's a level select code. Ain't nobody gotta know, man.

This is definitely a game that needs to be seen because man, the non-ride stages have so much bullshit out of nowhere that it's hard to believe they bothered with playtesting at all beyond making sure it didn't crash on load. Not sure about having it as a chaser to Sonic 06 of all things without HulkaMatt backing you up but you can probably retreat to Lost World if you get too fed up with it at any point. I'm really, really looking forward to the terrible glitches and bad design that await you here.

I would love to hear the story behind this game. Did it get shipped like this because of publisher pressures? Did the development team actually think this was good at any point? What goes into making the worst game ever made? I honestly would watch a documentary on it, I made it through King of Kong with no issue, this one could be way more interesting.
