The party is over.

January has flittered by, and now we're now having the hangover of the year, but what a party that was; Paris was under siege, Birmingham declared a caliphate, and Gideon got his cock out and drank his own piss.
We're in the last 100 days or so before the next election, so February promises more political rhetoric, soundbites and other assorted :clegg: as they clamour for votes. Also snow, so expect the usual "snowmageddon" coverage.

Oh, yeah, and the crassly commercialised Valentine's Day is coming up as well, I guess, if you can stomach it. If you have someone, enjoy it with them, if you don't, it's not worth killing yourself over you hideously ugly unlovable beast; contact your local Citizen's Advice Bureau or similar.

Things are stabilised a little, and thank christ I have an interview or two lined up in the next week or two. However my housemate's woes continue. Barnet council in their infinite wisdom have decided to deny the existence of Belgium and claim that he has no legal right to reside in this country, despite being an EU citizen, working here for years and even working for the police at one point. Various legal advisors have been contacted, as well as the Belgian embassy.

Norfolk and Suffolk mental health Skype 'outsourcing' causes concern posted:

A health trust's proposal to help treat patients with depression by using "staff from lower wage countries" via Skype showed a lack of understanding of mental health care, say campaigners.

The idea was put forward in a report to the government by the mental health trust for Norfolk and Suffolk.
Unison, which represents mental health staff, said the plan failed to show an understanding of mental health care.

A trust spokesman said the proposal was looked at but has been dismissed.
The plan, drawn up towards the end of last summer, was contained in a successful application to the government by the Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust (NSFT) to fund consultants to look into new ways of running the trust.

One option could see the NSFT become a mutual - a firm owned by its workers, as is the case with retailer John Lewis.
The report said the use of staff from outside the UK to help prevent depression and psychosis was a "new approach" to be explored.

Emma Corlett, spokeswoman for Unison at the trust, said: "Our view of the report is that it shows whoever did the application did not have a very clear understanding of the work frontline staff do or the way face-to-face therapy works.

"We want a skilled and well-paid workforce here and we should not be looking for outsourcing workers with poor working conditions and wages."

A spokesman for the Campaign for to Save Norfolk and Suffolk Mental Health said: "That NSFT could even consider Skype shows how little the board understands of the work of its staff and the needs of its service users."

Gary Page, chairman of NSFT, said the application included "a number of highly speculative ideas and thought gathering, with absolutely no commitment to any of those becoming initiatives that the Trust would wish to consider or put in place".

"For us, investigating a mutuals model is all about improving staff engagement. Being part of the Pathfinder project might help us fully understand the benefits of providing staff with the autonomy and ability to truly shape, and own, service delivery, while keeping our services local and responsive," he added.

it's going to happen regardless - the US/Canada are pushing ahead with telecommuting therapists, partly due to traveling distances and/or hostile weather, so Unison is picking a poor line of defense by arguing that it is fundamentally impossible.

rather, the plan will almost certainly be to triage cases into telecommutable/non-telecommutable, with local staff to start off (staff who are not in London are lower wage than staff who are, after all), then transitioning to contract outsourcing. Unison can make more hay on the triaging process (every patient lobby group considers their own conditions an especial snowflake) and on the outsourcing bit in general, rather than arguing against telecommuted therapy even when it is becoming more available in other parts of the anglosphere. You may as well wave a buggy whip.

I don't know the details of how it is done, but yes, as I understand it PIP is basically running on the same system as other benefits began to under the auspices of Atos: Deny almost everything first time around without any regard to what was said, and actually do a proper look at things only on appeal. Filters out people who accept the initial ruling for one reason or another, and probably saves some money on people who die between their initial application and coming to review the appeal.

So yes, appeal, talk to CAB for advice, or direction to legal aid if you think that's necessary (doesn't sound like it would be in your case, but they helped my own DLA appeal go through smoothly a couple of years ago).

I'd be interested in the evidence base for remote 'talking therapies'.
You miss out on a huge amount of non-verbals if you're talking via Skype and it seems like a talking therapy is the exact situation you'd probably want to able to see someone's non-verbals.

Homeless Darren Offord has spent the last decade living on the streets and he has now blasted the government's record on homelessness
The desperate brother of a Tory MP who has been living on the streets for 10 years has begged the politician to help him end his nightmare.

“My brother is worth thousands. I think he gets thousands of pounds a year just for being the MP.” When asked if he had contacted Matthew, Darren replied, sobbing: “I’ve tried, I’ve tried.”

Darren’s life on the streets is in stark contrast to that of his brother. Matthew, 45, divides his time between his family home, a thatched £785,000 five-bed cottage in Boxford, Berks, and his constituency home in the capital.
