Being able to live like an adult is pretty good motivation for obtaining qualifications which allow you to earn more than minimum wage, even if they're qualifications which can be gained in a few days. A lot of transport and logistics stuff pays 25-30 an hour and the certificates needed only cost a couple of hundred dollars.

Apart from the fact that a lot of people don't want to be white collar workers, most of the financial pain is upfront with the trades. You get paid lovely money while you're undertaking your apprenticeship, but you finish with a lot less debt than someone who has undertaken a professional degree (although that's probably going to change dramatically here in the next decade).
