I remember getting really good at smashing my mouse down repeatedly and memorized the maps and then would just run around with an MG42 and come around corners and spray people in the face crouched and go like 50-4 and people would get so loving mad at me.

ColoradoCleric posted:The stupidest thing they did to ruin balance was get rid of bleeding so that what was once a 1 hit kill garand basically allowed anyone who wasn't shot in the head to kill you before you could account for recoil. Also it ruined shooting through walls. Exploiting the bleed / stopbleed function to become a suicide bomber was fun. You would just pop up from behind a corner grenade primed making grunting noises next to some enemies, as soon as someone killed you, the grenade would go off and kill everyone .

DOD:S owned except it got gently caress all attention from Valve who decided that pumping out more and more TF2 hats was more important than fixing half the broken poo poo in DOD:S when their half-assed updates ruined it. I don't even know if my computer will run it, it seems like a total lottery sometimes.

One of the few FPS action games where grenades were lethal as gently caress.

DoD 3.1 beta was great. One of the features of day of defeat was the ability to pick up a grenade and throw it back - if you were quick enough. Most seasoned players soon learned to toss a grenade at their feet, pick it up, then throw it, so there was less time for the opposing team to throw it back. We discovered an ... interesting bug with that; After you pick up a live grenade, it bounces around in your hand to show you that the fuse is cooking off. Once a set amount of time passes, it will explode - right there in your hands. For whatever reason though, holding Altfire would prevent this from happening - it wouldn't pause the game's timer, the grenade still reaches "Ok time to explode", but holding altfire blocked the grenade from exploding, until altfire was released. I used to hop onto a random server, toss a grenade right at my feet, pick it up, hold altfire, and then run headlong at the enemy team while switching my flashlight on and off. The flashlight thing would actually illuminate yourself, and switching it on and off rapidly draws attention to yourself rapidly. And confuses other players. I ran right up to an enemy soldier, and stopped, with my flashlight flicking on and off and on and off. He paused, and just seemed to look at me for like 10 seconds. Then he pulled out a shovel and bashed my head in - which then disabled the "altfire" override for the grenade, causing it to immediately explode, taking out him and the guy next to him. A couple more runs like this and people started realize that if you killed that weird flashy fucker, he'd explode. They would actually run away from me to keep out of harm's way if I was too close. By this point the server had started to lose the "serious" feeling of a real match, and silly things started to happen. I somehow managed to back three of them into a corner, and over chat one of them was shouting "DONT KILL HIM DONT KILL HIM HE'LL EXPLODE DONT KILL HIM", so it was just me and them, staring at each other, all the while my flashlight ticking on and off. This kept on for about 30 seconds, until one of my own teammates shot me in the back of the head. Blammo, 3 kills from a grenade. at this point everyone starts asking me how the hell I'm doing it, so I decide to go all "wise master" and try and teach my flash-fu: "First, you must concentrate your rage and negative energy, and then expel it from you! (Throw a grenade on the floor)" "Then, you must master your own rage as you master your life! (pick up grenade)" "Then, and most importantly, you much channel your inner essance, until your powers GLOW within you! (flashlight on and off as fast as you can!)" at this point, I start seeing a lot of people suicide by grenades - note I conveniently left out the bit about holding altfire... I mark over to the enemy teams spawn point (which at this early stage of DoD, was basically protected by a one-way ramp with a cliff at the end - the spawning players could run up the ramp and fall off the cliff, but it was too high to jump on and get into the spawn point), and park myself just off of it to watch, and I bust a loving gut watching wave after wave of soldiers fly off the ramp past me, clutching a grenade and flashing - and then exploding. "ITS NOT WORKING!" "No, you must flash HARDER! and FASTER!" *queue more soldiers jumping off a cliff flashing like lunatics and exploding in gibs* ... I never did tell them about alt-fire.

i remember getting high as a kite and playing charlie for hours, if you knew what you were doing you could get like 3 objectives in the first 2 minutes of the game. also the carbine seemed like poo poo at first but once you got used to it it was pretty awesome, the low recoil meant you could mash the button and headshot people from the other end of the map.

The best gun was the allied bazooka carbine rifle thing. It had such a fast rate of fire if you could click fast enough it was lethal at any range and then if you didn't kill them you had a bazooka anyway. But the best tactic was (and still is in DoD:S) go bazooka class, kill someone and take their primary weapon, congrats now you have two primary weapons. Also remember in DoD where the Axis got 2 machine gun classes for some reason? And the British weapons were massively overpowered. Such a shame they didn't make it in to DoD:S also do you remember that map where you had to bomb a bridge, and the other team (I think) could use some howitzer-thing which made a ridiculously loud noise map-wide that went "eeeeeeiirriir eeririririrrr eeieeeerrrrrrr" like a pigeon making GBS threads a coat hanger concerned mom fucked around with this message at 20:32 on Feb 13, 2015 |

Good map, and those stupid rocket things are nebelwerfers. If the Germans were dumb they were so easy to blow up as all you had to do was walk over a satchel-charge and then walk into the nebels.

Who move piano? I used to love playing allied on Avalanche, the teams were always so imbalanced 'cause pubs only thought you could win as Axis. Basically throwing smoke at the church then running up through apartments, out the second story window to spiral staircase then just laying waste to wave after wave of crying babies. There was a map that didn't get ported over to DoD:S. There were two buildings where you could use the bazooka to blow a hole in the walls to make a different route. I think the allied side was able to crawl under a wall into an area with a fireplace and a small window to the left If you camped there you'd get pinned down by mg fire from across the square, or you'd get killed when axis blew out the wall. I remember there was another area where you could walk up a beam to get to a second floor hiding spot, but it was always really contested land so people would try to knock out the lower floor right away.

Two golden memories of ownage: Having a machine gun on the first version of Omaha, mowing down dozens of American scumbags. Dropping a grenade in the spawn at the beginning of the match and immediately switching teams. An easy 4-8 kills.

one of the maps had an invisible ladder to an otherwise out of reach balcony by the german spawn. sometimes i could luck out and get up there without being spotted, but since it was by the enemy spawn, it was loving tough. once up there though, you couldn't be seen and since no one knew how to get up there you could plink the krauts as they ran by over and over until you ran out of ammo i loved doing cheap poo poo like that
