Occupy Wall Street would have been more effective if they had occupied Wall Street. Crazy idea, try barricading Wall Street and preventing anybody from getting in or out. Yes you'd probably have the police out in full rear end-whomping force but that would have been a better image instead.

they would have just beat up the protesters and cleared them out before it caused any significant problems. you would have had at most, a partially interrupted day on wall street which doesn't really matter because nearly everything is traded electronically.

OWS did nothing but gets a gold star for good effort and a certificate of participation in public disobedience.

We are at the forefront of the anti-fracking movement and generally bash both lovely parties every chance we get.
You people are pathetic professional protestors.

Only in America would pepper spray be considered a violent act. Considering how most other countries would resort to gassing or shooting thousands of people who are protesting. It was a good thing that people only got eye irritants and not bullets in the head, like the more Socialist states.

It never ceases to amaze me how people who weren't involved sadistically look at those who were involved in OWS as scum; but a lot of them change their minds once they start looking at all the poo poo OWS protestors endured.

From Bank security literally forcing people inside a bank and then arresting them for trespassing, to protestors at UC Davis being doused with pepper spray so that some of them vomited blood (and the officer got a better payout than any of the protestors did), reporters getting their credentials taken away and being beaten and arrested, to the war vet who got his skull cracked open and put in a coma from a tear gas canister, to the mayor of Oakland letting slip that the Feds were coordinating suppression of OWS (which violates the 1st Amendment of State and Federal Constitutions), to the cointelpro-like infiltrations by local cops, and that sniper-assassination rumor which was never fully explained.

And what were they protesting? Trillions of dollars in bailouts to banks who leveled the global economy such that middle class American families lost 40% of their net worth in three years, two decades worth of economic growth, and not a damned one of the big bankers were indicted or convicted of massive fraud because they were too connected.

nonviolent protest doesn't work unless you have a huge % of the public supporting you and they are willing to withhold the only thing that capital gives a gently caress about, their labor. having a violent wing doesn't hurt either.

It's a pretty basic thing to understand. Someone who just lost their house or is in danger of losing their house, works an actual job or just lost it, and is responsible for their family isn't going to feel too enthusiastic about ritualized college kid protesting. Especially if someone in their early 20s calls them out for an offcolor joke or a lack of understanding about an academic left wing concept.

OWS wasn't actually the 99% though, a lot of people there were quite literally trust fund benefactors

I mean it's great to try to do something about corruption but the 99%-1% slogan is an odd way to go about it. I think good people who want to do something about income inequality are good regardless of their actual income. Maybe that's why the slogan worked but the movement didn't. Just putting some thoughts out there into the e-zone
