If you really wanted to revolutionize work in this country you wouldn't just be fighting big business and finance, but unions as well. Institutional Inertia is a bitch and makes bad fundraising. It would be like Uber vs. existing cab infrastructure and laws - but on a much wider scale. The 'obvious' solution is to mandate an Uber-type model with the 'protocols' (hours, pay, certification) managed by a regional government.

Wrong. There won't be enough jobs for everyone in 20 years due to advances in automation, we must instead prepare for systemic unemployment.

If Bernie supports a GMI, I'm going all in.

I dunno, I like those old sci-fi stories where "full-time" jobs are like 15 hours a week. For roughly the same standard of living, I'd be fine with doing two days a week of garbage pickup. (I'm talking manual pickup here, not those fancy robot-arm trucks that are all the rage)

Hopefully he can but I doubt he has enough relevance to affect much.

When a tree grows, it is soft and pliable. But when it's dry and hard, it dies.

Hardness and strength are death's companions. Flexibility and softness are the embodiment of life.

That which has become hard shall not triumph.

Automation didn't kill all the jobs, it just shoved most of them into a bloated, poverty level wage paying service industry.

Now the service industry is beginning to automate, and there's nowhere else for low-skill workers to go.

Get rich soon so you can become a part of the burgeoning aristocracy that's going to end this historically anomalous experiment with democracy!

How can workers have any rights without a union?

McDowell posted:

Unions as they existed in the 20th century as a solution today.

Instead one might consider state-run information systems for job finding / income reporting, with a minimum income and constant demand for basic labor (filling potholes, janitorial work, oil changes, w/e). If you are capable of work, you work.

Not to pick on you (too much), but this is similar to other progressive magical thinking: if we all wish for something hard enough, our democracy will pass a law and make it so. There's absolutely no way a basic income, or establishing the government as employer of last resort (also known as Job Guarantee), will make it through congress without union power increasing.

If you don't believe me, the last time congress cared about welfare or JG was when union density was at its peak in the mid-70s. Bernie's actually for building the infrastructure of the democratic party so it can pass democratic policies.

By making a paygrade system that formalizes hours and pay for everyone.

To elaborate: business has had decades to develop counter trade union narratives, and unions themselves often become self-serving entities rather than fighting a wider struggle of producing common wealth.

I'm suggesting the labor struggle should be combined with the newer narrative of disruptive information technology.

I don't know why Bernie is even bothering. It's got nothing to do with money or policies - the modern Democratic Party was forged by Bill Clinton twenty-five years ago in the fires of Arkansas, and every aspect of the party machine seethes with the evil powers of the Third Way. Although Obama was able to out-Clinton Hillary and take the nomination, Bernie has zero chance - either he will be able to wield those powers but in return become an evil greater than that he sought to slay, or he shall be consumed by it and perish.
