I'm curious, does UK television have as many detective/police procedural shows as the US? Every year there's like one or two new one's and I just don't get it.

Yes but they tend to be much higher quality because their are no mandatory seasons. If the story is over, or needs to settle than that's fine. They don't have to produce 22 episodes every year. American television would be a lot better if they practiced the less is more philosophy.

I remember hearing that that was one of the pluses to UK telivision. The writers actually have an ending to the show instead of just stringing it along for as long as possible and then coming up with some bullshit ending.

Yeah they're always very regional and feature either a fish out of water like a man from london will go to 'the north' who does things differently and struggles to adapt to the culture shock or an aging no-nonsense alcoholic who gets results damnit.

I sometimes hear Brits say negative things about northerners. Is the north pretty much like the south here in the US. Do you keep your rednecks there?

I'm a southerner living in the north.

Us southerners are thought to be effeminate shandy-drinking pooftas who vote conservative and we think of northerners as uncivilised monkeys who eat black pudding, live in coal mines and race whippits. It's a massive cultural divide.

The closest people to rednecks I guess would be the Welsh or maybe scousers.

The north-south divide in the UK is based on the North previously being industrial region with strong working class politics that got hosed hard during the 19702-1980s with deindustrialisation (part of conservative government policy designed to crush the power of the unions and disenfranchise the working class) which condemned tens of millions of people to economic misery. The South (and particularly the area surrounding London, and London itself) is seen to get preferential treatment from government because that's where most of the wealthier people of the country live.

Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved?

So it is... Thanks! Highly recommended, BTW, along with another vote for Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and it's less twisted cousin, The IT Crowd. I also love Keeping Up Appearances, but your mileage may vary. Don't forget The Goonies (if you can find it), or Luther.

So are southerners generally considered "posh". Is that what posh means? Like, if I wore designer clothes and hung out with rich folks would I be considered posh?

No, you'd be rich. Poshness is a specific intangible element of class that's probably intrinsically linked with going to certain schools and growing up in a specific environment.

If you can stand 1980s production values and laugh tracks, Blackadder is a great series. Rowan Atkinson plays a series of the shittiest nobility imaginable in various periods of British history.

Wire in the Blood is really intelligent and well written psychological crime drama, couldn't recommend it enough: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337792/?ref_=nv_sr_1
