It's come to my realization that there hasn't been any really, really good sci-fi since the 70's, and any good sci-fi since then is based on works from the 70's or earlier. Think about it - where have all the fresh ideas gone?

With that being said, if I knew how to write a spec script, I'd write a sci-fi script that explicitly harkens back to the style of 70's sci-fi.

There was a lot of good sci-fi written in the 1980s, too. Maybe you just have poo poo taste, OP.

You know I would try to think of something funny to put here but ill just pass on that and threaten people with a + 2 board with a nail in it.
Probably doesn't help with what the right wing has tried to do with the Hugo Awards.

Suddenly it all makes sense: we lost optimism and just made everything a pale shade of Judge Dredd.

A sequel to a book written, you guessed it, in the 1970's.

Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn Trilogy was written in the 90's and his Commonwealth Saga was written in the 00's. Both are excellent space opera adventures and neither are obviously derivative.
