I Failed At Anime 2022

Devil May Cry is a stylish action game series loved worldwide for its colorful characters, deep and cool gameplay, and for just being dang fun games. Created in 2001 out of the remains of Resident Evil 4, Hideki Kamiya created the first game in what would become a series and would be helmed by Hideaki Itsuno from 2 and on. The general premise of DMC is you play as a dude named Dante, whose occupation is a demon hunter. You progress through a linear story fighting demons and other various rivals to solve whatever job Dante has been hired for. Throughout the story Dante will employ various means to fight demons whether they be his signature sword or turning higher level demons into weapons with unique abilities to use for himself. This series in notable in being on Capcom's biggest franchises throughout the 2000s and to this day still has a healthy following which can only be said for series like Street Fighter and Resident Evil.

Enough about the background lets talk about the gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaames

Dante Actor: Drew Coombs

PS2, PS3, 360

The first game in the series. Dante is visited by a woman named Trish, who resembles Dante's mother. She takes him to Mallet Island to defeat Mundus and free the island from his evil. Beyond being the game that started the series, this was the only mainline DMC game that wasn't directed by Hideaki itsuno, but Hideki Kamiya, creator and director of Resident Evil 2 prior to DMC. DMC1's inception was actually during RE4's development when the game resemble an action more than a traditional horror game. Instead of scrapping the idea, RE4 director, Shinji Mikami, decided to approach Kamiya and ask him to make a new game out of it. Kamiya decided to use a glitch that they found from Onimusha: Warlords to inspire the stylish gameplay that would be turned into DMC. DMC is very different from later DMC games. While it does inspire a lot of their conventions, it's also very obvious that DMC was originally an RE title due to the number of puzzles using specific items you pick up along the way, horror elements, and generally static camera angle. DMC is not as fast or tight as some of the later games, but it is still a fantastic game in its own right.

DMC's unique qualities that put it above other action games around the time was the freedom of movement of the characters and combos. Dante is able to jump around and move very quickly to fight against his enemies who more often than not just as mobile and powerful. Dante gets a variety of weapons such as the lightning sword, Alastor; the fire gauntlets, Ifrit; and Dante's father's sword, the Force Edge, which would transform into a multi-purpose sword that turns into other kinds of weapons. Dante employs a number of firearms as well for long-range capabilities such as handguns, a shotgun, and the Nightmare, a demon weaopn which fires lasers that rebound off of surfaces. DMC also employed a ranking system which rewarded you for learning the game and getting better, maintaining a higher stylish rank is seen as its own reward by a lot of fan.

Pros & Cons
+Started Devil May Cry
+Cool gameplay
+Cool weapons
+Nelo Angelo
+Dante
+Hideki Kamiya
-Static camera angles could get aggravating in confined spaces needed to maneuver
-Underwater shooting sections
-Frosts
-Dante not voiced by Reuben Langdon yet

Dante Actor: Matthew Kaminsky
Released in 2003
PS2, PS3, 360

The second game in the series. DMC2 follows Dante as he is contracted by Lucia to go to Dumary Island and stop a businessman named Arius from summoning the greatest evil, Argosax. DMC2 is the first game directed by Hideaki Itsuno and uh... it's not very good. DMC2 is considered the worst DMC game by a large portion of its fanbase for a multitude of reasons, the main one being that the game is shallow compared to DMC. Dante has nowhere near the same number of weapons, all of his devil arms now being replaced by swords that have the same movelist and a gameplay mechanic where you can augment your Devil Trigger that's not very well thought out. Damage is generally lowered all around and guns are the most efficient way to kill anything, p much. It attempts to capture a lot of what made DMC1 great without really understanding what made it great and as such it is a poorly designed mess in about every way.

To say it is without it merits is wrong though, DMC2 has contributed to the series even if it wasn't competently. It gave Dante a cool new coat and Rebellion, the sword that would become Dante's signature weapon in games to follow. It established Bloody Palace and other playable characters besides Dante in Trish and Lucia. Finally, it gave us the Despair Embodied, probably the only halfway decently designed boss in the game with really good music.

PROS & CONS
+Cool Dante coat
+Despair Embodied
+Bloody Palace
+Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I guess Desperation Devil Trigger was cool?
-lovely bosses
-Guns are best way to fight sometimes
-Schizophrenic enemy design
-Reusing DMC1 bosses poorly
-Argosax the Chaos
-Lucia
-UNDERWATER SECTIONS ARE YOU loving KIDDING ME
-Corrupted Helicopter
-Costed DMC3 sales
-Dante doesn't talk
-No Pizza :(

Dante Actor: Reuben Langdon

The third game in the series. DMC3 is a prequel to DMC1 that follows the story of a 19-Year Old Dante before he became a demon hunter for hire. Dante's brother, Vergil, has erected a tower that he plans to use to take their father, Sparda's, power and Dante must stop him before his plans come to fruition and humanity is doomed. DMC3 is where Itsuno figured out why people liked the game and went into the direction further. DMC3 is fun. Pure unadulterated fun. Everyone in the game is choreographed like their lives are an over the top martial arts move to the point where Dante sitting down to eat pizza is the most dramatic thing as he flips over his chair by kicking it. It takes Dante's joking character from DMC1 and throws it up to 11 to the point where is snarking to everyone imagineable with goofy one-liners. The weapons are all outrageous distortions of well-established weapons like ice nunchuks, a pair of brother swords using wind and fire, and a LITERAL electric guitar. This would also be the game that establishes styles. Styles are different modes for Dante where it prioritizes a part of him for combat and gives you unique options specific to that style. The Special Edition released a year later allowed you to play as Vergil with all of his weapons that he used in the game.

Swordmaster- Prioritizes Devil Arms giving Dante access to an arsenal of moves for his Devil Arms
Gunslinger -Prioritzes Firearms giving Dante more moves for his guns to use them in differing situations.
Trickster - Prioritizes movement and evasion giving Dante teleports, air dashes, and a ground dash he can use to expertly avoid and outmaneuver his opponents.
Royalguard - Prioritizes defense giving Dante an actual guard option which absorbs damage if you guard at the perfect time and lets you throw the damage back to your opponent.
Quicksilver - Slows down time.
Doppelganger - Gives Dante a shadow double letting you effectively play with two Dantes.

DMC3 would create the formula for Devil May Cry to come leaning towards more linear stage structure and simplistic puzzles, but more combat depth and stylish gameplay.

PROS & CONS
+Reuben Langdon
+Tons of cool weapons
+Styles
+Half of the bosses are unique and fun
+Vergil
+Vergil's boss themes
+Mo-cap choreography allowing for over the top and cool cutscenes
+Lady
+Shotgun is really good
+Devil Triggers designed by Kazuma Kaneko
+Pizza :)
-Enemy design is better, but still sort of lackluster
-The other half of the bosses suck
-Arkham
-Vergil's kind of fun, but really limited
-Stage structure isn't great either and fixed camera can be lovely in certain areas still

Dante Actor: Reuben Langdon
Released in 2008, SE 2015
PS3, 360, PC, PS4, XBO

The fourth entry in the series. DMC4 follows Nero, a new character who is a member of the Order of the Sword, a religious group which worships Sparda like a god. Dante busts into one of their sermons one day and blasts the High Priest in the face. From here on Nero hunts down Dante to get revenge with his sword, gun, and his new demon possessed arm, the Devil Bringer. DMC4 is a controversial game in the series. Along with replacing fan favorite protagonist Dante, for a new guy, it also is clearly lacking in some areas such as the stage design. A common complaint with the game is that it repeats itself in the second half when you get control of Dante and you just run backwards through the game. Another complaint is the story is really bare bones and not well done, unlike DMC3's which, while typical, was a full story with decent structure and character to it. Overall though, reception of DMC4 was largely positive on release and as time has gone on it has become a more beloved game in the series. It helps that the next game we're going to talk about exists.

DMC4 makes a lot of changes from DMC3. First if the camera which is controlled by the player now for the most part. Nero is another big change in aside from him just not being Dante, his weapon set never changes. Over the course of the game Nero gets more moves for all of his weapons and a very different Devil Trigger from Dante to help set him apart and give him a unique style. Halfway through the game you switch to Dante who can now change styles on the fly and keeps all of his weapons on him all of the time. Unfortunately, you are not able to go through the game from start to finish with Dante first but Bloody Palace allows you to play as either. The PC Version added an extra difficulty to the game in Legendary Dark Knight mode which essentially turns DMC into Dynasty Warriors, filling the screen with enemies. 7 years later, Itsuno would put out the special edition, on top of all of the additions the PC version had exclusive to it, it adds 3 different characters. Returning Vergil and Trish and featuring playable for the first time, Lady, Dante's companion from DMC3. They all play through the same story missions Dante and Nero do with their own unique opening and ending scenes, but that is the only difference aside from playable characters of course. Vergil's own story is him going through all 20 missions and Lady & Trish are like Nero & Dante switching off between one another when appropriate.

PROS & CONS
+Half of the bosses are cool and fun
+Credo
+Style switching on the go
+Buster
+Reuben Langdon
+Johnny Yong Bosch
+Credo's theme
+Devil Triggers are all super cool
+5 Playable Characters

-The other half of the bosses aren't that great
-The story is pretty mediocre
-Kyrie
-Dante and Trish can only fight Credo in Bloody Palace
-Sanctus and Savior Sanctus
-THE SAVIOR IS COMING
-Dante's shotgun is bad, Lady's is broken
-LADY EATS DANTE'S LAST SLICE OF PIZZA :argh:

Dante Actor: Tim Phillips
Released in 2013, DE 2015
PS3, 360, PC, PS4, XBO

The fifth entry in the series and a reboot. DmC follows Dante, a half-angel, half-demon hybrid known as a Nephilim. Dante is employed by a group know as the Order to fight off a demon known as Mundus, whom masquerades as a businessman. To fight the demons of Limbo City, Dante must move in and out of a place in reality known as Limbo which is the only place that is possible to see demons. To accomplish this Dante will use demon and angel arms granted to him by his mother, Eva, and his father, Sparda, to fight through an army of Demons and defeat Mundus. DmC is the only game in the series not developed by the Little Devils team and is instead developed by a western group, Ninja Theory. To say DmC is a controversial game is to say the sky is sorta blue. On top of a large shift in tone from previous games, DmC having an entire new developer who was only known for developing mediocre action games prior did not set anyone's life on fire.

DmC tonally is cruder and grosser than other DMC games. It makes actual attempts at satire, parody, and being generally mean-spirited. Gone is the over the top fun style that DMC used to have, now replaced with a fat man walking down the street drinking virility as he farts onto a billboard of a naked man hiding many They Live references. But how's the gameplay? ...Not bad, but not good for a DMC game. If this game was titled anything else, this was would be an okay action game, unfortunately it is called Devil May Cry. The gameplay is far less complex now having replaced lock-on for two dodge buttons and shoulder buttons you hold to change weapons now simulating the style of Heavenly Sword, another Ninja Theory game. None of the weapons feel particularly unique or inspired with exception of Aquila maybe and all of your feels really clunky and lovely. To top it all off the game ranks you almost solely on damage, so it is not difficult to maintain your SSS ranking, so what was once a fun challenge to impose upon yourself is something you can do on accident. DmC is not a bad game, whenever the game lets you play it it can actually be kinda fun, but unfortunately it is too entrenched in poor enemy design and platforming gimmicks to do that. NT attempted to rectify a lot of the game's problems with the Definitive Edition and while they legitimately put forth an effort, it still has a lot of problems that couldn't just be fixed by changing damage values and the style meter.

PROS & CONS
+Game can be sort of fun at points
+Bob Barbas is actually an okay boss fight that is also kind of funny
+Aquila
+Visual Design overall is okay
+The Definitive Edition was an actual attempt to fix the game's problems
+Gave us DMC4SE Vergil
+Mike Kob
-Bad boss design
-Bad enemy design
-Platforming sections are boring and simple
-Why would you use anything other than the Arbiter?
-The music is terrible
-Baby Sighted
-Awful dialogue
-Awful characters
-Washed out color palette
-Tameem Antoniades
-Devil Trigger sucks
-Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy did a game series that started in 2001 and was doing well need a reboot, why capcom

Dante Voice: Toshiyuki Morikawa, Reuben Langdon
Released in 2007
DVD, Blu-Ray

Devil May Cry the Animated Series is 12-episodes long and follows Dante in his day to day life, but he has been tasked with taking care of a little girl named Patty Lowell. The anime series is generally not very well-regarded by fans due to how boring it can be and how little action there is. If you go into it expecting "Dante's wacky daily life" you might get more out of it, but otherwise it's overall just kind of disappointing. It's still very easy to get thanks to Funimation obtaining the license and redistributing it and it's incredibly cheap to get either the DVD or Blu-Ray.

PROS & CONS
+Reuben Langdon in the anime
+The music is loving great
+Madhouse
+Highway Star
+Rolling Thunder
+Death Poker
+Strawberry Sundaes
-Kinda boring
-There is an entire episode about this loving dude tailing Dante because he thinks his girlfriend is loving him and oh my god i dont caaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeee
-The villain sucks
-Japanese Dante is not Reuben Langdon
-ADV was not able to afford Danielle Burgio and Kari Wahlgren to voice Trish and Lady so they're just houston vas
-Patty would be fine if her storyline wasn't overarching and the ending to her story didn't loving suck

There are six Devil May Cry books out there, two of them are light novels, two are prequel mangas to DMC3, and the last two are manga of DMC4 which never got translated to english. It's really hard to talk about because a lot of them are about nothing really. I've only read the prequel DMC3 mangas and they got discontinued before they could do Code 3: Lady which was supposed to wrap everything up. I just remember a lot of grungy and lovely art, Dante talking about Neil Sedaka records and a pre-amazon warrior Lady.

Dante has appeared in all sorts of other games, here are other games featuring Da Demon Hunta

-Viewtiful Joe

Viewtiful Joe is another game directed by Hideki Kamiya and it is one of the greatest stylish action games ever featuring really fun gameplay that uses speed mechanics in cool ways. Dante is a playable character in the PS2 copy where he is entirely a separate character from Joe. He even has a different story and dialogue recorded by his DMC1 actor, Drew Coombs. Trish gets kidnapped instead of Sylvia and Dante has to save her. His sword, Alastor, is also in the game as an actual character and Dante has a storyline with him where Alastor left him to be in Viewtiful Joe because he hit Alastor too hard on an enemy, it's really good. When Dante loses his henshin he is in a speedo, play it. Dante and a myriad of other DMC characters are also playable in the PSP version of Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble, it's p cool.

-SMT

Made by the guys who would later make Persona 3 & 4 & Devil Survivor, Dante has appeared in one Shin Megami Tensei game, Nocturne. He is an enemy of the protagonist, but is also recruitable later in the game. He has his DMC2 look, but still snarks and fights like you know him. In the rerelease of Nocturne later exclusive to Japan, they replaced him with some loser high schooler in a cap.

-Project X Zone

A crossover SRPG that is really boring to play. All of the characters are paired together in teams and you press specific button combinations to have them perform their moves. Dante is paired with Demitri from Darkstalkers in the first game and in the second game coming out soon he is paired with Vergil from DMC3.

-Marvel vs Capcom

A fighting game series made by Capcom that varies in quality depending on the number in the title. Dante was one of the first characters introduced in Marvel vs Capcom 3 alongside Deadpool and is his DMC3 interation featuring pretty much all of his styles, weapons, moves and everything. He's a crazy character that's really fun to play. Trish is also playable in her DMC1 iteration using Sparda & Luce & Umbra. In Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Vergil was added using his DMC3 iteration where he does everything in the world and nothing else.

-Playstation All Stars Battle Royale

A fighting-party what the gently caress ever game made by Superbot Entertainment that crosses over sony mascots. Ignore the fact that Big Daddy and other non-Sony specific characters are in the game, it has Dante playable! From DmC...

REUBEN LANGDON

Why do I keep mentioning this dude's name? Reuben Langdon is a cool dude who's been voicing Dante since DMC3. On top of just being a really good voice for the character, the dude has done mo-cap work for Dante in everything on top of co-founding his own mo-cap studio, Just Cause Productions, where he also did mo-cap work for Chris Redfield in RE5. When DMC3 came out, he also did the live-action commercial for Japan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaX1-T9LY9A

When the DMC anime came around to get dubbed too, that dude took a pay cut just to voice this character, he's awesome. He is currently voicing Ken Masters in the Street Fighter series, but did return to voice Dante in the DMC4 Special Edition and will hopefully continue to voice him in future stuff. Please acknowledge him and love him.

Since mine was basically the last post of the last thread, I'm going to repost it here:

(for DMC4SE)

Does anybody have any links to good tips/etc pages? I'm playing on PS4 so I don't really have access to a practice mode and my performance in BP is wildly inconsistent (basically depending on how much I cheese using JFJC). I watched the advanced Vergil tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF16RaBq9V4) which was good but I'm looking for more in-depth stuff.

I'm having a lot of fun doing weapon switches and trying out new combos, etc. I have either massive success or I get completely destroyed. It's more fun than just using Yamato though.

define "in-depth" here- like, how to deal with enemies as vergil, or enemy properties specific to 'em or more advanced techniques not listed in the video?

Played DMC3 for the first time about a year ago and was amazed at how awesome it was. The Nevan in particular was amazing and I'm really sad it didn't come back in 4.

Dante's design has always seemed a little weird to me. Somehow I had never seen anything but young Dante up until I started playing the fourth game, but apparently the older version is "the" Dante as far as the series is concerned? Older Dante has never quite looked right.

For Vergil - more like how to practice, some good controller setups (not sure if mine would work), and maybe some example combos. A lot of the time I just end up getting guys airborne then comboing/JFJCing them to death, which is boring.

What about Blitzes? I basically just run around and shoot summoned swords at them until they lose their shield, then I DT and unload on them, then when the red electricity comes up I basically dodge/run like a madman. This tactic can't be the best way, but the only surefire way I've seen to beat Blitzes is to do a distorted charged uppercut, and babby isn't so great at distortions yet.

Edit: For my control setup, I basically made RT shoot swords, square does the melee attack, and triangle is the special (grim trick). Everything else is the same.

controller setup is just preference- i use the default schemes on all of my stuff with a weird grip so i can weapon swap and still press buttons (ring finger on trigger, middle finger on lockon button, thumb+pointer for face button presses)
mission 12 is the general place i use to practice stuff since you can practice on regular scarecrows and mega-scarecrows in the room next door (without having to kill anything to get to them).
the initial room respawns like three times after the initial clear so that's super convenient.

for example combos, i really like sakaki and catherine enthalpy's styles- ultimately there's no real objective judgement so it's just a matter of tryin' to do poo poo you think looks cool and getting inspiration from whatever you see i guess.
note that catherine enthalpy's combos use debug mode/GMD health values or something so they're not doable normally.
this dude has really sick finishers and setups too

as for blitz, there's a vid on a simple way to kill em: (but yeah, it uses distortion)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfX8sOpociM
it's not too hard to ghetto distort vergil's uppercut as it does so many hits and has massive hitstop. you just let it rip and when it hits turn on dt and mash the DT button again and it'll probably distort one of the hits.
to note, if you don't have a sword formation out when they're transforming into the berserk mode you can actually heavy rain sword them to freeze them for a simple charged punch finisher if you bring 'em to that level the normal way.

Nice! Thanks for the info. I'm looking at those videos right now.

It seems like people use DT a lot with Vergil. I've pretty much ignored DT in all the games unless I'm trying to blitz a boss or I'm low on health. Should I be interspering DT throughout my combos?

It's crazy the lack of information/tips/vids out there on this game.

DT carries with it the abliity to do trick down (teleport down to the ground) in the air alongside trick back and sideways.
it also makes certain moves act differently: for example, a lot of those vids use DT'd stinger because the aerial version of DT stinger goes extremely far, meaning that you can use it as a flashy way to move around during your combo by whiffing it.

other stuff affected by DT are lunar phase, rapid slash and yamato combo A.
lunar phase gains a ton of hits, and on the ground it follows up into rising sun (the rising kicks). in the air it just gains a fuckton of hits.
rapid slash does a ton more damage and gains the special exploding sword property.
yamato combo A gains three additional slashes- two more small two-handed slashes and a huge mega slash.

to note, once you do the attack, you can un-DT as you've already gone into the attack animation for the DT version of the attack.
so you can DT, do a grounded lunar phase, unDT and then still get the rising sun followup despite being regular vergil.

and yeah, i'm pretty surprised there's not like a comprehensive guide or wiki or something.

other stuff affected by DT are lunar phase, rapid slash and yamato combo A.
lunar phase gains a ton of hits, and on the ground it follows up into rising sun (the rising kicks). in the air it just gains a fuckton of hits.
rapid slash does a ton more damage and gains the special exploding sword property.
yamato combo A gains three additional slashes- two more small two-handed slashes and a huge mega slash.

to note, once you do the attack, you can un-DT as you've already gone into the attack animation for the DT version of the attack.
so you can DT, do a grounded lunar phase, unDT and then still get the rising sun followup despite being regular vergil.

and yeah, i'm pretty surprised there's not like a comprehensive guide or wiki or something.

Wow. So I should probably (definitely) be using DT a lot more.

It's weird - I looked on gameFAQs and the Steam forums and there doesn't seem to be a ton of information out there. There's a lot (like the Vergil videos) it's just tough to parse.

And the controls are weird- I'll try to do a Drive/Overdrive and half the time my guy just tricks. Frustrating.

Too bad the rest of the game is just so fun.

You've been a huge help!

DT is really really good and you should use it. It isn't a handicap it is an attack modifier and should be strung in regularly to your attacks.

Hopefully there's still a chance of a new Capcom-made DMC game in the future. I think the old team were involved with Dragon's Dogma, but with the online version still in development and most likely needing a lot of post-release content and support, it might be a while before we see a new game.

I was still pleasantly surprised by DmC, although the original release did have a lot of problems. Playing without lock-on felt really clumsy, especially against flying enemies, and the terrible devil trigger sending all the enemies up into the air didn't help this.

Dragon's Dogma is coming out on PC, which I never saw coming because I thought it was going to be the Japanese equivalent of Red Dead Redemption.

DMC5 is gonna happen, I believe.

Farewell, marble-dwellers!
When fighting Blitzes as Vergil, I find that a DT'd Yamato Combo A either kills them outright or puts them at near dead status after knocking out their electricity. The entire time you're hitting him you also blast him with summoned swords. The final 3 slashes of Combo A also have enough armor that they won't be interrupted by the Blitz' electric shielding.

dmc5 is happening totally though
the dragma team isnt working on DDO, that's a buncha new guys
DMC4SE was done by access games/swery's crew with design supervision by capcom dudes
in comparison dmc3se and dmc4 were being worked on at the same time, though that was also a wildly different environment too

I can totally believe we'll get a DMC5 and probably a return-to-classic after the backlash. (not to mention that Ninja Theory is working on Disney Infinity these days.)

It probably won't be particularly big budget though and if it flops then welp

I played all three of the first games with the collection and would honestly say that only DMC3 is really worth people's attention. I think OP puts it well in the first post--DMC1 has weird problems and pacing issues and isn't quite an action game but isn't really a horror game and doesn't really know what it wants to be. The voice acting is also positively ATROCIOUS in the first game.

Dante's character has always been very confusing in these games. He's kind of a cocky prick in the first game, and his only moments of emotion are when he gets all weepy about his mom. In DMC2, Dante's probably at his most interesting as a character, because he seems really grizzled, experienced and kind of world-weary, willing to do rather dark things to accomplish his goals, but this doesn't really matter because the plot if nonsensical and he barely loving talks for most of the game.

DMC3 is definitely the most polished in terms of gameplay, and the story is a lot of fun, the soundtrack too, loving fantastic. The fights with Vergil are all really great and the final boss fight is one of the toughest and most satisfying Capcom has ever produced. It's a game that not only still holds up, it's honestly quite a bit better than a lot of 3-D fighters that proceeded it, like God of War. I honestly consider DMC3 the pinnacle of the series, superior to DMC4.

Vergil 3 is nowhere near as tough and scary as Vergil 2. Like the only thing Vergil 3 has over 2 is that force edge lets him round trip and Judgment Cut can be intimidating the first time you fight him, otherwise he's a lot more passive and easy to punch in the face. He's nowhere near as Terminator-like as he is as Vergil 1 and 2.

I disagree. Vergil 2 was a cakewalk for me compared to Vergil 1. Yamato is pretty quick, but once he starts using Beowulf he telegraphs like crazy.

Dont judge me, I design your manhole
Tried a bunch of times to beat Virgil 2 with the Nevan before giving up and had a fairly easy time with the Rebellion. Virgil 3 was essentially the opposite, he was impossible for me with the Rebellion, but then I realized he doesn't guard against the bats. The latter was still way harder for me, though.

When I replayed DMC3 a year ago I beat Vergil 2 by rocking out in his face with Nevan and it owned.

I have yet to figure out how to do Nevan correctly. I mostly just rocked Agni and Rudra until I got those sweet punching fists, then I punched EVERYTHING.

He does but he's still aggressive which is why that fight is more fun. Vergil 1 and 2 are both a ton of fun and 3 was just sort of a letdown because there are a decent amount of stretches where he will do nothing but wait for you to attack him and you either get a free combo which he will then teleport out of or break, both of which give you enough to dodge roll or jump over him for anything he throws out.

vergil 3 doesn't use sword formations or beowulf so he sucks

i mean it makes sense that he doesn't use beowulf because you mug him as dante but still
