What is actually stopping the WAFC who own Perth Stadium Managment, the WAFL and the Eagles/Freo from just going "well, you guys have fun with your empty stadium... we're just going to be chilling over here in Subi"?

Other than the whole "cutting off nose to spite face" thing.

I actually enjoy watching Steve Dangles video blog*, so I'd be keen to listen to an AFL podcast even if it is the Carlton and Geelong show.

*= (he's a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, they haven't won the cup since 1967 and I think they've only made the playoffs once in the last 10 years; they're actually worse than being the Melbourne of the NHL because they haven't even made the final round of the playoffs since 1967, but their excuse for it was being saddled with one of the worst owners in Professional Sports history for something approaching 30 years. Two years ago they lost 15 games in a row to crash out of playoff contention, and that streak was amazing viewing.)

Half the pleasure of being a goon is being able to justpost lovely opinions about sportsball without having to do it in a place like HFBoards or BigFooty. We'll ignore the cricket thread for now though.

Is it really that strange? They don't control what happens at other grounds, but they can control what happens at their ground. Given the choice between a terrorist attack at the MCG and someone else's stadium, I'm pretty sure they would prefer the latter.

Seems like a non-issue to me. Don't get why so many are up in arms about it.

The NHL and NBA (I think the NBA has one, it might just have weird rules about salaries also NFL iirc) all have salary caps and part of that is that no one player could be paid more than a certain percentage of the cap.

They're still right in the race for the spoon; Essendon wins over Melbourne tell you as little about how Essendon are going as Melbourne wins over Essendon. I'm happy that Carlton, Essendon and Brisbane are at least going to put up a bit of a fight on their way down to the cellar, the worst thing is when you're a fan of a team that has basically lost every game by quarter time.

I'm struggling to see what's "American" about names on jerseys. I think every sport I've watched at a high level has players with names on jerseys. I have some new sports channel that airs all types of awful stuff like Russian hockey and Chinese basketball and they have names on their jerseys. It's not an American thing... it's a common sense thing, especially when there are about 60 players on a pitch. Maybe names on Jerseys did start here but who cares, good ideas are meant to be adopted.

It's funny because AFL, out of all the weird sports and leagues I've watched, on the face of it seems the most "American" to me. The team names, hard hitting action, no promotion/relegation, the frequent display of stats all game etc.

I find that Australian sports broadcasting is very similar to the American style. Commentators are often given a lot more leeway (through access to the stats guy) to talk about why they think x team is winning or what y team can do to get back in the game, much more like pundits than simple commentators in sports like Soccer.

The Promotion/Relegation thing has more to with the fact that literally no-one else in the world plays ARE GAIME, and Collingwood successfully argued that football should be a full contact sport back in the early 1900s when those fucken pansies from places like Melbourne argued it should be a more gentlemanly affair.

Having said that, the relative lack of ad and game breaks and the complete lack of "I WENT TO <College>, GO <Mascot/Nickname>!" stuff would be totally foreign.

You mean the ad breaks after 99% of goals?

The number of ad breaks in a game of AFL (20 goals a game, 100 minutes in a game, an ad break every 5 minutes or so) does not quite stack up with the NFL's ad breaks (20 mandated ad breaks over 60 minutes, or an ad every 3 minutes or so).

The numbers aren't infallible, and there are a stupid number of ads in the AFL, but it's not as silly as the NFL (The NHL is super weird with it's ad breaks - they seem to be during some breaks in play, but sometimes the play can drag on for a bit and imho it feels like they pile more ads on to make up the difference, I don't watch enough NBA or MLB to know any of either of those).

Nicknames are good to a point, but in general I think shortened or just casualized names are the way to go. For instance Bartel having Jimmy on his back would be very Australian and most casuals would still immediately get who he is and when he's being referred to by commentators. But his nickname around the club is Nudge, which is super obscure and would put off everyone.

A bunch of school groups do the "VCE/HSC/Whatever the gently caress Queensland, WA and SA do! Congrats!" shirt thing. A bunch of them let the person buying the shirt pick what goes on the back. I'm sure it means something to all the people in that school who are friends but, as a guy riding the bus home from Uni, they all look like colossal fuckwits.

I want to trade in Lachie Hunter and everyone seems to think it'll be fairly even but i still think bringing in players whom are playing Hawthorn is too risky. What do you think?

This isn't that time of the year.
A couple of years ago it was, but that was when everything was nice and smooth on the gravy train. The team is older, slower and the injury list right now is not pretty.

I'm not saying I don't think the Hawks will come out on top, I think they will. But the Dogs are going to give a hell of a lot more than they did this time last year.

Just got back from the Hawks-Dogs game.

That was a heart destroyer. 10 minutes would go by without any score and then they'd just go kick-for-kick. Dogs really had our total lack of pace exposed for large parts of the game, but I feel the Hawks were just more clinical when they needed to be.

Great game, great atmosphere. I don't know if the better team won, but the score difference definitely feels right.
