Guarantee you'll knock on the guy's door (doubtless a middle aged coward) and scare him into backing off just with the thought of being confronted.

It's a salve for the conscience of people too lazy or cowardly to hit the streets. "Well I'd only be giving them the attention they want anyway.... better stay in with my animes!" Not only do they avoid all effort, personal risk, and unpleasantness, but they even claim moral victory and superiority over both the fash/rape-advocate and the Antifa/womens' rights protester. Jedit posted:In 1933 nobody knew what the end product of fascism was. Now, they do. If you want to worry about the takeover of fascism it's not the skinhead fuckwits of England First (or whatever they're calling themselves this week) you should be concerned about; it's the encroaching shift in that direction from within the established political movement. It's never been the skinhead wankers, they always act as the street troops for the political movement. You can oppose both and both can be a threat.

Robot Mil posted:This prison reform stuff today is making me so loving mad. Cameron is going on about how 'scandalous' the state of the prisons are but making no mention of the huge increases in suicide, self harm and assaults both on prisoners and staff since 2010... and no-one seems to be talking about the huge cuts (sorry 'savings') that are being made. Why are you so surprised that things are going tits up you utter moron?? Staff numbers have been cut by 30%, budgets by £150 million, the probation service has been privatised and community services around job seeking and benefits to help rehabilitate are hosed. A friend of the family is a screw and he tells horror stories about his experience of prisons that are partly staffed privately. I think they get bonuses (or avoid penalties) by reducing contraband, so they just don't search for it properly. They lower violence rates by locking the prisoners in their cells all day, and if something does kick off in the landings they withdraw all the private staff and leave the convicts to it - I think to avoid injury and the resulting comp claims. The private sector!

Re this gravity business: if the experiment measures ridiculously minuscule variations in reflections of light I'm just as intrigued and impressed by what must be the incredible engineering feat necessary to build such a stable apparatus that (i guess?) needed to be totally isolated from natual vibrations in the earth in order to detect these teeny tiny vibrations only.

Vaguely apropos of the ongoing NHS stuff (but mostly my desire to share snippets from work) I'm cataloguing bills and letters from a Mrs Lawrence in 1890, who one of our Dukes hired to care for his severely developmentally disabled, epileptic and blind son. Her treatment of choice was Electrohomeopathy:quote:The electrohomeopathic system is an invention of Count Mattei who prates of "red," "blue," and "green" electricity, a theory that, in spite of its utter idiocy, has attracted a considerable following and earned a large fortune for its chief promoter.[4] quote:A symposium took place in Bologna in 2008 to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Cesare Mattei,[9] with attendees from India, Pakistan, Germany UK, and the USA. Electrohomeopathy is practised predominantly in India and Pakistan (although it is not a recognised healthcare discipline in India),[10] but there are also a number of electrohomeopathy organizations and institutions worldwide.[citation needed]Despite many accusations, its being practised worldwide including the USA,UK,Australia,India,Pakistan,Bangladesh, etc.

The big wide-ranging newspaper (and even online news) format is dead. I won't sub to the guardian online for the same reason I wouldn't buy the paper: 80% of the content (media, sport, celebrity gossip, human interest) is of little or no interest to me. It doesn't feel like value for money. I'd guess the future is in independent freelance jounalism with narrow fields of expertise so people can pick and choose what they read and support financially.
