Depends who's telling the story. If this is a George Lucas alternate universe, then this is fairly close to what he was planning for his own sequels before he decided to end the series after Return of the Jedi. His version of the pre-1983 Sequel Trilogy would have featured Luke setting off to find his long-lost sister, who would help him defeat the Emperor in Episode 9. Allegedly Lucas said that Dark Empire was "close" to what he imagined his sequel trilogy being.

If we're treating it more like Alternate History than just Alternate Story, it might be more like what happened in the Return of the Jedi Infinities story, with Palpatine escaping and Anakin surviving to join the Rebellion (though the comic ends there and doesn't show how things shake out afterwards).

If Anakin doeslive, then it might actually make the average Imperial citizen more likely to rally around the Emperor. Most people don't know Palpatine was a Sith, so Vader was the guy who could say all the quiet stuff out loud and was the Useful Monster that the Empire had in its employ. Finding out that the big scary robot man that everyone already hated had joined the terrorists might hurt a lot of the goodwill the Rebels had earned up to that point.

Palpatine would be on the lookout for another apprentice as well. Maybe he'd keep going after Skywalkers and try to draw in Luke or Leia somehow, or maybe one of the Inquisitors (if there are any left) would step up to the big leagues. Palpatine had spent a lot of time consolidating power under himself and Vader, with the military basically just being something he uses to secure personal power, so if he tells the military "you listen to this guy now", their success is probably going to be influenced by the ability of whoever that is.

Though without Vader's reputation, whoever Sidious picks as his apprentice is going to have their work cut out for them, since Vader's reputation probably did a lot to curb the ambitions of a lot of people who might try to take the throne for themselves.

The idea of Jerec stepping in to fill the #2 spot is great and hilarious.

I had an idea for a Star Wars RPG campaign based on the Tales of the Bounty Hunters story where IG-88 is attempting to take control of the Death Star II. The campaign is an alt-timeline where IG-88 succeeds and derails the ending of ROTJ. The PCs goals are to find the Death Star II, then fight their way through it since it has gone full System Shock.

(I would also try to work in as many elements of the Tales of short stories that I can, like those weird brain spiders in Jabba Palaces and the guy smoking the hookah at the cantina).

"Darth Maul, where the hell have you been all these years? It feels like an age! What? You've got robot legs now? That's perfect. Be in my office tomorrow at eleven. What? You're a crime lord now? Well, I suppose bring them along too. You never can have too many unscrupulous mercenaries.

Oh. And Maul?

I missed you. Welcome back."

hell yeah. if you're gonna work in a bunch of cantina folks then you obviously need to have the modal nodes there too. ig-88 hired them to provide ambiance and then trapped them inside or something

And all for the massive fortune of 500 credits!

Exploration is ill-advised.
Death Star gone System Shock seems almost too obvious a plot it's surprising you don't have well known examples of it. BioShock Infinite maybe technically.

The Modal Nodes stuck somewhere improbable is also too fun.

The central computer / IG-88 jumps to a galaxy far, far away and encounters a primitive ship near a gas giant in a star system with a single habitable planet. The Death Cube uses Sheev's secret cloning tubes to replicate a crewman from the primitive vessel and outfits the clones with easily manufactured slugthrowers and sets course for the habitable planet. The Death Cube quickly conquers the primitive military and starts replenishing its stores with the resources of the planet. Years later, resource extraction is nearly complete - the last mining and extraction operations are overseen by a small force of clones and security droids that defend against occasional attacks from the last few remaining natives.

DID NOT VOTE FOR FETTERMAN
If Sheeve croaked it for real and body swapping or clones don't work out he'd go into scary robot body and since he cares more about power than the Sith ideology, in so much as there is a difference, he'll ditch that and go "Kill All Humans" with his droid army who will now be smart and good because he's the one remote controlling them.

What happens when he wins? Well then he invades the next galaxy over and is up against the Yuuzhan Vong like 20 years early.
