Rope For No Hopers came today. I've always had mixed feelings about The Pirate Ship Quintet. One one hand their instrumentation and arrangement is flawless. Some of the best stuff I've ever heard. The only thing I'm not in love with is their propensity to use muffled screams on so many tracks. They don't add anything and are more often that not distracting. That said, I really enjoy this album in spite of the muffled screams. Buy it.

I actually like those bits. Which is especially odd considering harsh vocals aren't something I usually enjoy in music. But there you have it. And yeah, the album is fantastic.

While most modern screaming in heavy music is sort of using screaming as a distortion effect on the voice, theres something about the way that The Pirate Ship Quintet and *Shels do it that really adds the to dynamics inherent to this type of post-rock. I think *shels pulls it off much better, I really like the screams on Purple Buffalos, but The Pirate Ship Quintet's screaming just seems misplaced. While it's better than death metal screams, it just kind of irks me. Not enough for me to not like the album, but still.

Shels were just incredible though, everything seemed to go just right. It makes me want to see what The Pirate Ship Quintet can do live.

The throat singing was really neat too, I wasn't expecting it since I don't remember any on Plains of the Purple Buffalo. I'm stupidly tempted to go to both since they usually play a different set every night, and I don't want to miss Moya or The Sad Mafioso

I got into Tall Ships a couple of months ago, who sound kind of like 65dos but less glitchy, and with lyrics that are usually about science. I accidentally left my ipod charger at home, so instead of draining the battery, I did a Youtube roulette with various post-rock songs and came across this band called Tomorrow We Sail. Jesus Christ this is a gorgeous sound. Here is a band called Films that I probably wouldn't properly describe as post-rock, but it does resonate along the same sounds as, say, Eluvium. On the free and sounds fantastic front, there is Motionless. They sound like a somewhat lighter Samuel Jackson Five, where there are some jazz-like sounds mixed in, but their music crescendos very well, and, hey, free. You can get their EPs here.

Aesthesys was a very interesting Russian solo project (so much great post rock is russian solo projects) that is now a band. I think I mentioned these guys earlier in the thread, but Tangled Thoughts of Leaving are letting people download their debut, Deaden the Fields, for free this weekend. They're not strictly post-rock, as they incorporate a lot of different stuff and tend to be more intricate and less ambient, but they are strictly very-loving-good so do get it. I absolutely like agonist more but the new album isn't as disappointing as i had thought. Agonist just blew me away. I love how I found them too. I came across a larger version of the album somewhere with no band name on it (one of my favorite album covers too). I liked the art so I did an image search with tineye and it came back to some review. I downloaded the album not knowing anything about what kind of music they played. When I listened to it I was so stoked. Favorite album of that year in fact.

This sounds like a progression from their last one, 'Chasing After Shadows...Living with the Ghosts', which has this beautiful song / video.
