Rope For No Hopers came today. I've always had mixed feelings about The Pirate Ship Quintet. One one hand their instrumentation and arrangement is flawless. Some of the best stuff I've ever heard. The only thing I'm not in love with is their propensity to use muffled screams on so many tracks. They don't add anything and are more often that not distracting. That said, I really enjoy this album in spite of the muffled screams. Buy it.

I actually like those bits. Which is especially odd considering harsh vocals aren't something I usually enjoy in music. But there you have it. And yeah, the album is fantastic.

I actually think they are one of the few bands who manage to implement that kind of screaming tastefully. *Shels also does this and it sounds great. Theres something so passionate about it. While most modern screaming in heavy music is sort of using screaming as a distortion effect on the voice, theres something about the way that The Pirate Ship Quintet and *Shels do it that really adds the to dynamics inherent to this type of post-rock. It just sounds so heart breaking. AccountSupervisor fucked around with this message at 07:43 on Jul 1, 2012 |

I think *shels pulls it off much better, I really like the screams on Purple Buffalos, but The Pirate Ship Quintet's screaming just seems misplaced. While it's better than death metal screams, it just kind of irks me. Not enough for me to not like the album, but still.

Shels were just incredible though, everything seemed to go just right. It makes me want to see what The Pirate Ship Quintet can do live.

Yeah I was very impressed, probably up there with MONO for my favourite live show (MONO is incredible live and are a must see)

The throat singing was really neat too, I wasn't expecting it since I don't remember any on Plains of the Purple Buffalo. In other news Godspeed have added another night to their London show in November: http://www.atpfestival.com/newsview/1206211015.php Still no word on the support. I'm stupidly tempted to go to both since they usually play a different set every night, and I don't want to miss Moya or The Sad Mafioso

I got into Tall Ships a couple of months ago, who sound kind of like 65dos but less glitchy, and with lyrics that are usually about science. They announced their debut album for October today, but already have two EPs out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCawktSpEhI The outro from 3:00 on in this song is just amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zt9gPK5ek2g

I love Tall Ships! Really angular and great hooks. I think they're starting to get quite big now. Plate Tectonics is my favourite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62jCEgrmwkI

I accidentally left my ipod charger at home, so instead of draining the battery, I did a Youtube roulette with various post-rock songs and came across this band called Tomorrow We Sail. Jesus Christ this is a gorgeous sound. The White Rose: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucSECe9PCq8 Leningrad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMtf54gUf78 Unfortunately, they don't seem to have many songs, but what they do have just blows me away. Is there anything else similar to this sound?

Speaking of a nautical theme, though, here's another one of the bands that I found through my youtube scrounging, The End of the Ocean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG8xpIXbG3E. I'm not sure if it's just the name or what, but for some reason they do evoke the sea somehow. I can't pinpoint why exactly, though. Other notable find is Industries of the Blind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vthig-LH7Mk. They sound an awful lot like Yndi Halda to me, which means they sound phenomenal. I'm an absolute sucker for strings and/or piano in my post rock, it seems.

This is by far my favourite thread on Something Awful for that reason. On the strings/piano end of things, I would like to point you in the direction of Rachel's; the MONO & World's End Girlfriend album, Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain and Amiina. I do love it when we get new people in this thread, bringing in their recent finds.

I do love it when we get new people in this thread, bringing in their recent finds. At some point, my definition of post-rock sort of collapses and I have no idea why something is considered post-rock aside from it being mostly instrumental and possibly having guitars in it. I love the hell out of Rachel's and Amiina, but drat if I can tell you what makes them post-rock. Mono and WEG, on the other hand, at least feature rock instruments pretty prominently. Here is a band called Films that I probably wouldn't properly describe as post-rock, but it does resonate along the same sounds as, say, Eluvium. However, I don't think there is any way to get their album outside of their label's site, but it is such a calm and relaxing listen that it was entirely worth the buy. On the free and sounds fantastic front, there is Motionless. They sound like a somewhat lighter Samuel Jackson Five, where there are some jazz-like sounds mixed in, but their music crescendos very well, and, hey, free. You can get their EPs here.

So we are approaching the release of our vinyl and we have some awesome promo stuff for it. Check it out! https://vimeo.com/45274785 This video quickly documents my friend's (also a goon) new poster company, Hellish Things, as they make the poster that comes with the vinyl. We also have some photos of everything that the vinyl comes with. More photos on our site, where you can also preorder it. Preorder price is $20 but when it comes out on July 10th it'll be $25. Like I mentioned before, it's a translucent 180 gram blood red vinyl, hand made screen printed poster, full color insert, individually numbered (limited run of 250), digital download code. This is huge for me and I couldn't be more excited. http://www.spacescold.com http://www.hellishthings.com

There's a post rock subreddit? I'm not sure how to deal with this information. I'm just going to pretend its all Godspeed threads about how great Godspeed is so I don't actually have to look at it. Also, where'd you get such a big boat? Also, why does the Hellish Things video not have a Spaces song for making posters for Spaces?

Back when I was in a post-rock band, I posted my band's album in the post-rock subsection of Reddit. It was popular for like one or two days and then never got any new updates after that. Although I probably did a poo poo job of promoting it vv

Aesthesys was a very interesting Russian solo project (so much great post rock is russian solo projects) that is now a band. Often ambient, often minimal, this isn't standard fare (but it's so loving interesting that I had to post this song) but I urge you to explore more of their music, much of which is free! link be here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhDugP6qa74

I think I mentioned these guys earlier in the thread, but Tangled Thoughts of Leaving are letting people download their debut, Deaden the Fields, for free this weekend. They're not strictly post-rock, as they incorporate a lot of different stuff and tend to be more intricate and less ambient, but they are strictly very-loving-good so do get it. Relevantly, they also have a heavy focus on piano (also synths and rhodes, gently caress yes rhodes). http://music.tangledthoughtsofleaving.com/

After a number of listens its grown on me but I still think I prefer agonist.

I absolutely like agonist more but the new album isn't as disappointing as i had thought. Agonist just blew me away. I love how I found them too. I came across a larger version of the album somewhere with no band name on it (one of my favorite album covers too). I liked the art so I did an image search with tineye and it came back to some review. I downloaded the album not knowing anything about what kind of music they played. When I listened to it I was so stoked. Favorite album of that year in fact.

This sounds like a progression from their last one, 'Chasing After Shadows...Living with the Ghosts', which has this beautiful song / video. I'd start there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rENnKECnfs 'Raising Your Voice...Trying to Stop an Echo' is great, but I found it a bit long (as Hammock songs haven't the greatest variety sometimes). e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyEHzlgdkIA 'Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow' is more ambient / Stars of the Lid-y, but possibly my favourite. It's just not so much like the new stuff. e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCotVDL5bSA Looking at their wiki page makes me realise how much they've released that I don't have. Time to get the wallet out..
