I shipped some beer to myself. Duct taped the poo poo out of the neck/collar, then bubble wrapped each one head to tail. Plenty of bubble wrap to line the box and newspaper to fill it up, which didn't take much. Shipped the "hot sauce" USPS, so if I disappear for a few years that's likely the reason. Question though, if it was tightly packed with the duct tape and bubble wrap, it'll probably make it home fine, yes? There's some lovelies in there I'd prefer not to have to trade for to acquire again.

I'm gonna be heading to Toronto in a few weeks for a long weekend and was wondering if anyone has any brewery or beer bar recommendations - good food would be a plus as well since my wife is pregnant she's going to want something worthwhile besides the drinks. Incidentally, I picked up some Great Lakes Brewing Oktoberfest a few weeks ago after really enjoying it at the airport when I flew through Cleveland last year. It was still great but of the 5 bottles I've opened so far, 3 of them had the bottle lip break when I opened it up - the lip just stuck inside the cap and left a fairly sharp edge on the top of the bottle. Anyone else have that happen with them before? I used the same bottle opener I always do and have never had a problem with anything but this 6-pack.

It's not an issue with how you opened them, this just happens sometimes. It can be caused by several things, they might have gotten a bad shipment of glass or had their capper set too low. Somewhere along the line the glass got too stessed.

Speakeasy Brewery is taking over Aces and Ales this Saturday. The brewmaster (Kushal Hall), president/founder (Forest Gray) and marketing head (Brandon Borgel) are all going to be there. I've had a few of their beers and found them decent but not standout; is there anything in their lineup that's especially good? Projected list: Big Daddy IPA Double Daddy Butchertown Black Betrayal Imperial Red XV Anniversary Ale The Witness Payback Porter Prohibition Ale Scarface Imperial Stout Scarlett Red Rye Tallulah Something on-cask that Ryan isn't even telling us regulars about yet.

I've never tried anything from Oskar Blues, so I'm really looking forward to trying both. I also snagged 6 bottles of Stone's new collab, the Mint Chocolate Imperial Stout, and I'm hoping to find another 4 bottles at another shop tomorrow... My cellar is starting to look pretty nice, although I wish I had bought more than 4 bottles of 2012 Stone IRS for it.

Wooo apparently Boulevard's distributing some/part/all of their Smokestack series to California now as their initial foray into the state. Assuming all goes well sales-wise they'll roll out more of their beers in the coming months. Looking forward to trying The Sixth Glass and, hopefully one day, the Bourbon Barrel Quad. More quality beer on the shelves is never a bad thing.

It's nice to get a 15% discount, but I found myself buying way too many allocations of stuff I really didn't think was worth the $15-22 price tag with the discount. Dale's Pale Ale is pretty darn good. It's quite enjoyable to even just drink it straight out of the can. The 6 pack I picked up was canned 2 weeks ago today - 10/11/12. I will probably end up picking up a 4 pack of Deviant Dale's too, just so I can try it as fresh as possible. Do you folks think Ten Fidy is worth cellaring? I really love RIS, but I've yet to crack open a Ten Fidy because I've been having allergy issues, and won't be able to fully appreciate it for a few more days, because I can't smell a drat thing right now.

It doesn't seem to really change a whole lot when cellared - I compared a fresh one with one from the previous year and there wasn't a clear difference. I chalk up the differences between years to simple variations in batches. That said, it does not seem to lose anything.

I'd like to argue that in terms of breweries that distribute to a lot of states, Boulevard may be far too underestimated in a lot of the US. That may be because they distribute to a lot of states that already have tons of awesome breweries, but in the Midwest where they play home to, they are faaaaaar above the other midrange breweries imo. Does the state's liquor laws somehow limit "export"? I would think a state that big would have a few of national-level breweries. Since places defined as "breweries" in TX can't sell beer directly to consumers, you can't run a bar/tasting room at the brewery and make money that way. Breweries get around this by charging admission and giving you tickets, but either way, you can't make much money that way as a micro. To be profitable, you pretty much have to start distributing at lots of bars/stores from day one, and that takes enough money as it is before you can worry about further-flung places. I think at this point Karbach produces more beer than a lot of well-known breweries but not even they have plans to leave TX anytime soon. They launched with a 30bbl system and have gotten bigger since. Saint Arnold put out 40K barrels last year and that would put them higher than a lot of breweries that distribute across multiple states. In other news, my twitter feed's been annoying me because there are all these reports of The Dissident from Deschutes hitting stores nationwide and it's been impossible to find in Bend of all places.
