Well, they launched several similar missiles in tests back in May/June including one that lit up the night sky in Syria so I really don't see how this one has any special significance. Not surprising. Their conventional forces collapsed throughout the Yeltsin years and have never fully recovered. Credible nuclear deterrent is their fallback.

Is that normal / misleading / indicative of how underequipped Syria is?

Alright, I at least understand were they're coming from when they accuse the US of controlling the weather, or that Israeli intelligence is unleashing sharks on Egypts coast or sending in buzzard spies, but this is weird even for conspiracy theorists. When the other is the all consuming, all powerful conspiracy you can explain away any logical inconsistencies as part of the cover up. But if you're part of the group which has nigh mythical powers then how do you explain why your theory doesn't match reality?

Apparently Avigdor Lieberman has written a short entry in Haaretz hebrew to bash Amir Oren for being racists, and that's after this giant beaver has used the slogan "Only Lieberman understand Arabic". Usually he just doesn't give a crap about what people say, so my assumption is that if he went as far as writing in Haaretz, he has to be in deep poo poo with the elections.

http://www.arabist.net/blog/2012/10/31/chomsky-on-the-western-sahara-and-the-arab-spring.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter Pretty much agree with everything here. Not sure why anyone would point to the Western Sahara as the beginning. It's never really seemed to be that notable in Arab consciousness to me. http://www.washingtonpost.com/opini...6978_story.html quote:First, on the question of whether Woods and others were made to wait when they asked permission to move out immediately to try to rescue those at the consulate. The answer seems to be yes, but not for very long. There was a brief, initial delay — two people said it was about 20 minutes — before Woods was allowed to leave. One official said Woods and at least one other CIA colleague were “in the car revving the engine,” waiting for permission to go. Woods died about six hours later, after he returned to the annex. http://www.merip.org/mero/mero103012 Interesting article on Shias in Lebanon.

Here is a fun, yet in the end sadly tragic but hopeful, little documentary on 'Top Goons', a doco on some Syrian natives in Lebanon satirizing the Assad regime through puppets and their struggles (.. and then what their art turns into as rage drives them): http://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/witness/2012/08/2012820111648774405.html They also mention "we are goons" ![]() I want to stress that this is an excellent documentary on the growth of pacifism to militarism in those with, in the beginning, liberal attitudes towards resisting the regime through statement and art and their eventual decline into the realities of what the regime is capable of and would do in the face of pacifist resistance. Essentially they sum up what would happen in the event of total pacifist resistance against a regime's oppression -- total and indiscriminate massacre to hold on to power. One of the most lasting comments of wisdom in the end of the piece is essentially 'when fighting a monster, it is most important not to become the monster.' I'm glad they managed to continue even though their kickstarter failed. online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203630604578074983334946140.html I don't know who wrote it, but this is a terrible piece on Yemen that tries to connect Iran to the embassy attack. I've heard from people I trust that Houthis were involved, not sure how accurate that is, but the evidence that they are directly supported by Iran is limited at best and a lot of Houthi popularity has more to do with domestic politics than anything else. The claim of an Iran, al-Qaeda, Houthi, Southern Movement axis to destabilize Yemen is nonsense.

Surprisingly, Fox News had a pretty good minute-by-minute explanation of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM96sUZosaU Yes, it veers off in the final third of the program into being, well, Fox News, but the first portion where they're analyzing the attack itself seemed kosher. And pay no mind to the title the uploader gave it, they have even more of an agenda here than FNC. Golbez fucked around with this message at 19:09 on Oct 31, 2012 |

Hah, my first reaction to that and seeing the pictures was "drat I bet those on the ground must have had a real fear it was a terrorist attack." In other news, China promotes a 4 point plan that calls for a region by region ceasefire and calls for an interim transitional council from all sides.
